bwell Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 I purchased a Quantum smoke for full price yesterday at DSG and think its a pretty nice reel but I just realized its not the latest one out. This one only has 4 brake settings instead of 9. Should I stick with it or return it and get the latest one? I guess what I am getting at is, is the latest version any better than the pervious one besides the extra brakes? Quote
TNBassin' Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 If they are the same price, why not get all the features you can for your money? I say return it. Quote
bwell Posted September 28, 2012 Author Posted September 28, 2012 It was the only one they had, and I was stupid by not checking it out before I bought it... Quote
TNBassin' Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 Personally, I'd refund it and get the new one. Any price difference between the one you have and the newer model?? Quote
bwell Posted September 28, 2012 Author Posted September 28, 2012 I don't think so, but then again DSG doesn't have anymore in stock. I think I might hold on to it, from what I have been reading it makes for a great spinnerbait/buzzbait/frog reel. I'll make my citica D my Carolina rig reel now. Quote
Christian M Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 I would keep the one you have. I bought the Smoke reel w/the ACS brake system & honestly I prefer the ACS 4 position brake system to any other brake system I've ever used. I've owned Quantum, Abu Garcia, Shimano, Diawa, Pinnacle, and Skeet Reese reels, & honestly out of all my reels, I prefer my Quantum Code, Smoke, & HTP TE reels all w/the ACS 4 position brake system. The 4 position brake system really just makes it easier to tune in your reel. Instead of messing with 10 different brake positions, or 6-8 pins, you have 4 simple settings. I find the right one, then do all the fine tuning with the spool tension knob. I get the least amount of backlashes, the most distance, & the most accurate casts with my Quantums. If you do decide to keep it, put a couple drops of hot sauce on the reel. When I got mine it was a little noisy til I greased it, since then its performed like a champ. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted September 28, 2012 Super User Posted September 28, 2012 You got the Smoke 100, the other Smoke was released at the same time and is a different reel, it is the 150. The 100 and 150 refer to the size of the reel so you need to keep that in mind. The 150 is a bigger reel and if you want to know the difference aside from a few cosmetics is the gear ratios, the spool tension knob on the 150 has an audible click and the 100 does not, and the 150 hace the ACS 3 breaking system which I like but I also like the ACS 2 on the 100. The 150 also is more expensive, at full retail the 100 is $199.99 and the 150 is $219.99, now you can find them for less but there will usually be a 20 dollar difference between the two reels so you didn't get ripped off or didn't miss out on a newer model, you just got the 100 size instead of the 150. Keep it, it is the best reel I think Quantum has ever made and I have both. Quote
bwell Posted October 1, 2012 Author Posted October 1, 2012 Fished a two day tourney with it this weekend and loved it! It's my new shakyhead reel now, teamed up with my Abu Villain it's amazing. It casts a mile and can cast it effortlessly. Quote
