fishking247 Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 how to do keep them from not spinning? i am using a 5/0 gamakastu hook with the spring attached to the eye Quote
Big-O Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 Ck out this link photo and hook your toad as shown without excessive bow when skin hooking and it should run OK. Centering the hook is important... If this doesn't work for you the legs or appendages are probably deformed causing the spinning. A light weighted hook will take care of it and add distance to your cast as well. Hope that helps! http://www.ragetail.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/toad_diagram750.jpg 1 Quote
fishking247 Posted September 27, 2012 Author Posted September 27, 2012 thanks for the advice. i have rigged them that exact way but they seem to spin. the "spin" doesnt seem to have an effect on my catch rate though. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted September 27, 2012 Super User Posted September 27, 2012 Are you fishing them under water? Quote
fishking247 Posted September 27, 2012 Author Posted September 27, 2012 buzzing across surface scum then letting them sink in open pockets of water Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted September 28, 2012 Super User Posted September 28, 2012 I fish my frogs texas rigged with the curve of the hook on the belly side. Sometimes the frog will land and when I start reeling along the top of the water, I notice a slight difference in the way the legs kick. This is due to the frog being upside-down. Sometimes I will leave it, or I will let the frog go slightly under, and then continue bringing the frog back to the surface, it will correct itself. You may want to try using a hook that has the weight on the curved part, that may help to keep the belly down. Quote
West Coast Bass Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 tried to my hand at horny toads last night for the first time on straight braid. seemed pretty versatile, just need to put it in front of the right fish. no love last night but had much confidence. have heard nothing but good things. what produces the most strikes? walking on the surface or letting it fall then popping back up? definitely was varying my retrieve somewhat in the cover but in open water, it's almost as if it needs to be worked very quickly. I like to run it through grass areas and weeds along the shore line that are sticking up just above the water, like a few feet deep. run it around culverts too. 1 Quote
