chuckie1982 Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 Hello everyone, I stumbled upon this site while looking for fishing spots and thought I would sign up. I'm new to the area (Richmond, Virginia) and the states as I have just moved here from England and now trying to find my feet here. The fishing between the two countries is quite different so I'm still trying to pick up tips for some success over here. All though truth be told I was never that good at it at home but enjoy it a lot and the scenery here is amazing, hopefully I can start picking things up and put the things I learn to good use! I'm going to try my luck this weekend on the James river so any tricks and tips would be great. Quote

Local fishing clubs fish the local waters from the Potomac over to Gaston and Buggs, down to Nottoway and all of the local lakes and rivers. Richmond Virginia Bassmasters is a great club. It is the largest of all bass fishing clubs in the area and they fish 10 tournaments a year. You can also fish all of the six Region 3 B.A.S.S, tournaments. If you have a boat you can also join Flatbroke Bassmasters. If you do not have a boat you need to consider joining the Richmond Virginia Bassmasters and fish as a nonboater. If you want to seriously fish the Virginia waters; learn tidal tactics; know where to launch your boat; see the baits and techniques used; and have a fun time with a bunch of guys who are outstanding bass fishermen please send me a PM and I can send you information on Richmond Virginia Bassmasters. Consider taking the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Safe Boating Course and get your Safe Boating Certificate. Secure a copy of the Virginia DG&IF booklet, Freshwater Fishing in Virginia and you can find a wealth of information in the free publication. Tackle Express on Midlothian Turnpike and Wal-Mart have the booklets. The Richmond Fishing Expo is in February at the Fairgrounds in Caroline County (unless they move it back to the Richmond Intertnational Raceway). Make plans to go by checking the Southeast Fishing section of this Forum in January. You can meet the movers and shakers in the Virginia fishing industry. Also visit Green Top after their October 20th grand opening. The store is off I-95 at the Atlee/Elmont exit (83). Get to know the guys and enjoy viewing their inventory. The fishing guys are also excellent bass fishermen and they can be of tremendous help to you. In the meantime welcome to Richmond, There are many places to fish from the bank in the greater geographical Richmond area so try to find an ADC map book of the area and notice all of the ponds. Just remember the James River is a dangerous and unforgiving body of water so wear a PFD and go with a friend. Welcome to the Forum. Quote

chuckie1982 Posted September 28, 2012 Author Posted September 28, 2012 Thanks for the welcome, fishing on the pole is big back home although i don't use one myself i can't see the fun in a piece of elastic playing the fish instead of a rod and reel, but i have never used one so that is just from observation. They are very popular with match fishing due to the speed you can land the fish, although i do often fish for carp and as i understand the tactics are similar to cat fishing here. Quote
