Super User Nitrofreak Posted October 18, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 18, 2012 YES ! I'm glad to see that old line still gets a rise out of you VA guys.... LOL That line is only about 45 years old with me and I got it from a co-worker back around 1968 - 70. My VA co-workers would ask me for my pass port when I worked in VA, I would tell them I'd show it to them if'n they could read; they threatened to blow the WW bridge to keep me out of the state and my response was they would sit idle all day cause there wouldn't be anyone to show them what to do...... Well that's what I'm here for - laughs - if not, I might as well head on down to the senior center and play cards with the old folk. As for target practice, I'm not worried, I'd probably be safer in front of your gun than driving on N. VA roads. BTW, I have VA blood in me too, my Mom was born in Staunton.... You guys still get dizzy when you look up north for too long??? 1) Your older than I thought, man you must be really old... like fossil kind of old...is that older than dirt??? lol !! 2) I can see you are familure with our state dept. 3) Since I do not have a gun...other than a water pistol... I would assume you are correct...the best I could do is make you look like you wet yourself and send you back home, oh wait, that stain will most likely already be there since you have to come through N Va. traffic. 4) The only thing that makes us dizzy is listening to you guys talk in circles all day. If your Mom is from Stanton, How in the world did you end up there lol !!, only thing I can say is it must have taken a lot from your Dad to drag her out of the valley lol !!, I would however be willing to place a bet that she is the reason for your generosity and hospitality the you have and so willingly offer. Super User Nitrofreak Posted October 18, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 18, 2012 I was looking for the D.C. fee for a three day licence and I can not seem to find it, anyone know how much that may be? Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted October 18, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 18, 2012 Yeah well of course I have to have a parent with me. How else would I get there? and no I won't be 15, but ill get a temporary licensce. There's not need to buy one around here, its just small drainponds and a few offshoots of the potomac. Not like anyones gonna check my school ID to make sure I'm under 16 because I don't have a licensce. I'm probably the least of there worries. I doubt many of the people you see fishing with target rods and taking home a bucket of bluegill have a licensce if you know what I mean. You would be suprised at what we run across !! As for the rest of your comment, a temp kind of thing is the best thing for you I would agree as well, we just don't wish to have anyone get fined and have a bad day while we are all out there to have fun. How big are the blue gill you normally catch? think you could bring a mess to the cook out afterwards? Quote
Zoff Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 1) Your older than I thought, man you must be really old... like fossil kind of old...is that older than dirt??? lol !!That explains his comment. He was there at Appomattox when we allowed the North to return home with some dignity. Quote
Zoff Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 Traveller... you know I'm kidding? Right? Don't want guys in black suits and black cars showing up to my door. lol Quote
Traveler2586 Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 I was looking for the D.C. fee for a three day license and I can not seem to find it, anyone know how much that may be? Oh, here we go, I said I'd have to show you VA guys what to do "As of December 1, 2009, the fees for the license are as follows: (a) Resident $10 ( Nonresident - 14-Day $6.50 $6.50 - 1 Year $13.00 $13.00" http://ddoe.dc.gov/service/get-fishing-license 1) Your older than I thought, man you must be really old... like fossil kind of old...is that older than dirt??? lol !! I am VERY experienced 2) I can see you are familiar with our state dept. I worked at the U.S. Dept. of State, does that count?? 3) Since I do not have a gun...other than a water pistol... I would assume you are correct...the best I could do is make you look like you wet yourself and send you back home, oh wait, that stain will most likely already be there since you have to come through N Va. traffic. VA traffic gives me a brown stain 4) The only thing that makes us dizzy is listening to you guys talk in circles all day. That's cause we have to "tell you what we're going to tell you" - "tell you" - "then tell you what we told you" If your Mom is from Stanton, How in the world did you end up there lol !!, only thing I can say is it must have taken a lot from your Dad to drag her out of the valley lol !!, I would however be willing to place a bet that she is the reason for your generosity and hospitality the you have and so willingly offer. How big are the blue gill you normally catch? think you could bring a mess to the cook out afterwards? haha no i dont fish for bluegill. too easy! i was trying to say that the park rangers wont bother me for not having a license if im fishing without one when im 16. i figure they would be more likely to go after the hispanic people who fish to keep bluegill without a license. i tried to word it so it wouldnt offend anyone but i guess i wrote it in a way that was easily misinterpreted. Traveler2586 Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Traveler, remember that we may want to blast off on the Virginia side of the Potomac due to travel issues. Also, we will need the special DC fishing license if we fish on the north side of the WW Bridge. However, the Potomac is an outstanding fisheries and we could give a booby prize to the guy who catches the most snakeheads. I still think a more central location would do better as we have a lot of nonboaters and we need boaters for the event to continue its success. Buggs Island, Lake Gaston, Lake Chesdin, Potomac, Chick River, Chick Lake, James River, Briery Creek, Sandy Creek, SML, Moomaw are all possibilities. Isn't it great to have so many choices???? There is Leesylvania State Park at 2001 Daniel K Ludwig Dr, Woodbridge, VA 22191. It has two very wide ramps that will launch four boats abreast at one time, but is lacking on pier/dock access. So, if you launch in the middle of the ramp you'll need a driver in the boat to bring it to the dock. Leesylvania (that must be some kind of Southerner made up name) has breakwaters to help protect the boats from wind, wave, and current action. I've had some luck working the rip-wrap of the breakwaters for bass and striper's. I've been told the road into the park is a bit problematic if you have a big rig. QUOTE: "OVERNIGHT FACILITIES: A small, tents-only primitive campground is available only for groups. Reservations are required and must be made through the park's office." "CABINS/CAMPING: Leesylvania State Park allows group camping; call the park office for details and to make reservations. There are no cabins at Leesylvania." "Beautiful park & very clean. The scenery is amazing. There are picnic areas and swings for the kids. There is a fee to enter $4.00 weekdays and $5.00 weekends." UNQUOTE: I'll go for any of the waters you listed, pick a day and let's get a line wet. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted October 30, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 30, 2012 OK, there was a conversation between Zoff and I last night and there was a question raised about a deadline. Finances were a big part of that discussion, so knowing this and knowing how much money each of us will need to save for what ever location is chosen by you guys is a huge factor. What we are going to do is put the cut off at the first of January, this gives us plenty of time to schedule vacation days, save some bucks etc... we will go ahead and gather all of the availible info and post it for you guys and gals with prices on overnight stays at local campgrounds and hotels etc... we will have all of the best fishing reports that we can added to each area for the top five so that we can make the best decision possible. We will try to have this information all wraped up and posted by the end of the first week of November it should give us plenty of time to have a place picked out and prepair for the trip. We look forward to seeing where this ends up for this coming year and we can't wait to do it all again. Quote

Super User Nitrofreak Posted October 31, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 31, 2012 Alright guys and gals, here we go, keep in mind all prices are subject to change, prices are current rates. Smith Mountain Lake State park offers tent, RV camping and cabins Rates for cabins are a 2 night minimum Efficiency= $71 per night non resident= $88 per night 1 bedroom $84 $103 water view $106 $114 RV and tent sites Standard $20 per night Water/Elect $ 27 parking pass $3 per day during the week $4 per day on the weekends Boat launch fees $2 per day for both weekday and weekends One more option for SML is Zoff and his property, he and his family has VERY graciously offered anyone wanting to stay the night or night's a FREE place to stay, he is within an hours drive of SML. At 20,600 acres of water, Smith Mountain Lake is one of the premier fishing lakes we have here in Va., it offers excellent fishing opportunities for Large Mouth Bass, Small Mouth Bass, black crappie, white crappie, catfish, both flathead and channel cats, and striper fish. An average LMB is in the 2-4lb range, of course with opportunities in the 5lb range and up, the lake is known for it's excellent shoreline cover and structure by means of lay downs, boat docks and various brush and rock piles, the state park also has a fishing pier. the highest density of bass can be found around several areas, 2 worth mentioning are the Hales Ford bridge area in the Roanoake River arm and bouy B-26 in the blackwater arm. This lake is a host to the ESPN's Bass Master Elite Series Tournament Trail, ever wonder if you have what it takes to compete with the pro's, well here is your chance to fish the same lake they do, come get ya some !!! Claytor Lake The State park here offers the same as other state parks, with RV camping, tent and cabins, their rates are as follows. All fees are the same as Smith Mountain Lake posted above. The State park and it's surrounding area are absolutely beautiful, well maintained rest rooms and well groomed grounds around the state park. At 4,475 acres, Fishing Claytor Lake is awesome !!!, the bass here are not as abundant, most are also in the 2-4lb range, this lake is known for large Small Mouth fishing, it has produced in one year 15 SMB certificates, over 5 lbs or 20 inches. LMB, SMB, Black and White Crappie, Catfish, Spotted Bass, Stripers can be found here as well as Pike and Chain Pickerel. Claytors bait fish include, Bluegill, Alewife, Gizzard, and crayfish, Crayfish are one of the mainstay's of the Bass's forage here, so if you like fishing a jig you will find some lunkers in this joint !!! Largest LMB to date ay Claytor is 14lbs 6oz, thats a big fish !! Most bass are located in the arm of Claytor Lake, but I can promise you this there are big bass in the coves here, they have huge,HUGE, amounts of cover scattered everywhere with access to deep water right along with that cover, if you want a shot at a big smallie, try your luck along some of the big steep rocky shorelines Claytor has to offer. What really makes Claytor stand out is her people, Even in the middle of summer Claytor is not all that pressured with heavy boat traffic, I have found that people here know how to drive a boat, and also the people here are very quick to help you out with anything and will talk to you about anything. Chickahominy River Chickahominy Park One of two nice places to stay on the Chick, RV camping, and tent sites Fees Basic sites $22 per night non resident $26 per night Water and Elect $26-32 $30-36 Full hook up's $38 $42 Boat and engine rental for a day $36 non resident $54 Ed Allen's RV and tent sites basic $20 per night Water/Elec $25 Full hook up $35 Cabins @ Ed Allen's Cabins offer fridge, stove, microwave, coffee pot, sofa, kitchen table, chairs, dressers, picnic table, fire ring, grill, and a deck White Oak cabins $95 per night, sleeps 4 adults Red Oak cabins $110 sleeps 6 adults Antrium cabins $ 95 sleeps 4 adults "A" Frame cabins $ 95 sleeps 4 adults Chick river fishing Bass, bowfin, Chain Pickerel, and Black Crappie Bass here range in the 2-4lb range as well, Bowfin however are in the 3-6 lb range, bait fish here are the Bluegill, and red eared sunfish, and gas powered engines have no restrictions. The river has some of the most awesome cover you will ever see, with cypress trees and lilly pads GALORE !!! Early morning top water action here is second to none they say with some of the most explosive action you will be able to find anywhere in Va. during spring and fall months of the year. Occoquan Res. Fishing the Occoquan Res. you will find that the average bass here is in the 4-6 lb range. The Res is ranked #1 in catch per unit effort. There are boat rentals and bait shops located at fountain head, I have yet to be able to contact someone for pricing however, the numbers listed in their web-site do not seem to work for an unknown reason. any help would be greatly appreciated. As for camping there are areas that are local but no cabins and RV sites that could be found as of yet, any help here would also be greatly appreciated. The Potomac has already been covered by Traveler in this thread. Thanks for the great input for the Potomac Traveler !!! If there is anything we have missed, please do not hesitate to add your comments to this thread and cast your votes in the " Location for the 2013 Meet and Greet" thread !!!!! Quote
Zoff Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 I will add to NitroFreak about the camping... My place is open to anyone. We have a location for camping and you can set up generators. There is access to the river and a pond for some light fishing while camping. There is a spigot with water and (Nitrofreak and I spoke of this) has potable water. Some splitters could be added and water hooked up to your camper. The camping area is flat and will accommodate a lot of people. Not to forget... a place for a sizable fire. My family would welcome all of you. My Father and I own the property and he would be proud to have you stay there. If not... I will be camping with everybody at the Lake so I am good with whatever is decided. Page 5 of this thread has a view of our place. Quote

Super User Nitrofreak Posted November 6, 2012 Author Super User Posted November 6, 2012 Your vote has been noted as a change Traveler thank you !!! That makes SML tied with the Potomac right now. Any other votes guys we need them soon ok !! January 1st is coming in a hurry !!! I also voted for SML, I tried to find a decent campground and failed to find one that was RV friendly with in an hours drive on both sides, Va. and Md. however I found many that were tent/cabin friendly.
