justin apfel Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 If you're looking for a place out east, I would say pick the chick if you're not including the family...not much to do there with the whole fam. But a great place to fish (from a boat) Quote

Super User Nitrofreak Posted October 9, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 9, 2012 So, so far it's the Potomac and the Chick everyone is thinking, is that correct? I know if we do something at Briery, I am still getting mixed thoughts about that one because of all the prickly things in the water there, could we have everyones thoughts on that too please? Quote
Traveler2586 Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 So, so far it's the Potomac and the Chick everyone is thinking, is that correct? I know if we do something at Briery, I am still getting mixed thoughts about that one because of all the prickly things in the water there [[???]], could we have everyones thoughts on that too please? Can we do a poll of water bodies and number of days some how? Also, the 2013 Road Trip brought up an interesting point, State Parks may have cabins, they rent for a flat fee, and the more members to share a cabin the cheaper it is on each member. So if we picked locations with State Parks with cabins, we could do a weekend (Sat/Sun). Some members could come for the whole weekend, some that could only come for one day (Sat. or Sun.) And campers can camp. So the questions for a poll could be: Would you be interested in the following waters, check all that apply: Smith Mountain Lake Leesville Lake, Virginia Lake Anna Chickahominy River @ Riverside Camp 2 Claytor Lake State Park Little Creek Reservoir Park,Va Staunton River State Park Lake Chesdin, Va Briery Creek Lake Lake of the Woods Deep Creek Lake, MD Lake Moomaw Belle Isle State Park, Rappahannock River Hunting Run Reservoir (electric only) Philpott Lake Diascund Reservoir (electric only) (etc) How many days can you attend? 1 or 2 Would you like to share a cabin? Y/N Would you like to camp Y/N Would you be a boater Y/N Would you be a co-angler Y/N Would you bank fish only Y/N (note - some people may not like boating) I just ran out of questions :] But you get the idea How do you do a poll anyways? Traveler2586 Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 You have a State park close by that you would recomend for the Potomac? Smallwood State Park, it has the Sweden Point Marina which is the best Middle Potomac launch site in MD, it's all just off the Potomac on the Mattawoman Creek. http://www.dnr.state.md.us http://www.dnr.state...n/smallwood.asp I'm going to drive over there to check out the camp sites and cabins first hand and will let you know what I find. Super User Nitrofreak Posted October 9, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 9, 2012 Thanx buddy !!! I will get to work on the rest of it as well. Quote
Zoff Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 Smith Mountain Lake has the same offerings as Anna did... cabins and camp sites. If you don't mind the 45 min drive to SML, camping can be had on our farm next to the pond and river that can be fished as well. I will do either. I can promise the same good time as Anna if you guys come down here. Can't promise fish but a good time is a guarantee. The way I look at it... we will eventually... over time... hit all the spots in the Old Dominion so I am good with where ever we choose. Given the choice... I would pick SML for the next one. lol Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted October 10, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 10, 2012 PARTY AT ZOFFS PLACE !!!!! WWWHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOO HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!! You buying the beer too?....I will take two cases of Budweiser please. What a great offer Zoff, thank you very much, now you say it's right on the river, how good is the river to fish and is there a boat launch near, is it good smallie fishing or is it pot luck where we can catch anything, what about glass boats vs jon boats is it safe for both? Are you sure your wife will allow you to do this, cause I don't think you want to see the morning after LOL !!! Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted October 10, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 10, 2012 OK, I am finding a ton of camping everywhere I look for bodies of water in the old Dominion and we have got some really good feedback from Traveler for the Potomac. What I would like to do is eliminate some of these areas for lack of interest. Zoff, would it be ok with you if I create a post for bodies of water that has State parks, Camping, etc...and see what kind of interest we can attract? It's gonna take a couple of days to get it all right. Quote

Are you sure your wife will allow you to do this, cause I don't think you want to see the morning after LOL !!! Yeah... she's cool with it. This is a small family farm and I already got permission from my Dad for use of his part as well. The river is "no go" for glass. I use a jonboat. A friend of mine uses a 16 foot Lowe with a jet drive for his fishing. I figured we could catfish as well at the farm. If you have a small boat with motor, you can put in here and go up and down but must be able to carry it to the water. I pPut it at the ramp up river from me and take the 4 to 6 hour trip down just fishing for smallies. There are LM as well. State law say only one and must be over 20" if you want to keep them. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted October 11, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 11, 2012 hhhhhmmmmm sounds like a lot of fun too me !!! I have yet to catch a smallie, don't really care for whisker fishing, the girls like it though, so they may enjoy it, I will just enjoy watching them with a few cold ones lol. Quote

Zoff, did you say Smith Mtn. is a 45 min drive away? Have a good weekend guy's I love to sit and watch my wife and daughter fish when I am not on the front of the boat, the jon boat allows me to do that because I am in the back, usually I have a difficult time keeping up with the boat and fishing if it's breezy, so I get frustrated and watch the girls. Whisker fishing Zoffs pond or fishing the river is something I would really enjoy watching them do, I would enjoy the company as well, maybe that's what we need to do, just sit back in the chairs and watch the girls have some fun. Zoff, were you talking about whisker fishing your pond or the river? Quote

Zoff, were you talking about whisker fishing your pond or the river? Usually, when I'm kickin' back watchin' young Lady's have fun with a pole, it's not a fishin' pole. I would enjoy a relaxing day on a slow moving river, I'll see if I can get a friends canoe. Quote

Zoff Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 The pond has mostly Crappie, Bluegill, and Largemouth. There are a few smallies that were in the when we bought the place 20 some odd years ago but that is getting less and less every year. I haven't catfished the pond in years so, if there are any left, they would have some size on them. The "whisker" fishing would be from the bank on the river. Catch enough and have a catfish fry. We can take jonboats, canoes, kayaks, innertubes... that type of stuff... down the river for the smallies. As for SML... yeah... it's about 45 or so minutes to the ramp I use regularly. Leesville Lake is about 10-15 minutes from me as well. We are getting to that time now where the fishing will be tops but a little cool in on the river bottom. Are we talking about doing this next year or soon? Quote
Zoff Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 Attached is a pic of the place to give you guys an idea... Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 12, 2012 Super User Posted October 12, 2012 Ed. Allen's on the Chick Lake has boats with 9.9's for rent. We could work out a deal and have these small boats for use for the guys without boats. Or we could fish a body of water that allows only trolling motors or 9.9's and us guys with the big motors can use our trolling motors to get around. We need a place with nice accommodations like a state park or motels since some of us don't have campers and I quit camping after I got out of the Army. Are there any nice reserviors in Charlottesville we can fish? Any places where the guys can rent boats other than Chick Lake? We had a great time this year and hopefully we can continue it next year. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted October 12, 2012 Author Super User Posted October 12, 2012 Sam, the only places I have found so far that have boats to rent are on the Potomac, the Chick and on the Occoquan, I do not remember which one though, either fountainhead or Sandy run. all of the camping areas have campsites and cabins at their state parks, at least the ones I have found for the bodies of water so far that are listed. There would be an overwhelming pile of info to type down for all of the waters mentioned so far, that is the reason for getting it down to the top 5 and then I will get the info out there so we can all make an informed decision as to where we would like the next one to be. As for areas around C-ville, yes there is one right behind the airport but the name gets away from me at this moment, not too sure what they have to offer either at this time, i have a couple friends that tell me it's a good place to fish. We are happy to hear you had a great time Sam, that was the main goal, hopefully we can get more family envolvement and have some more fun as a complete family unit in the future. To all: Please cast your vote, we have made the poll so that you can vote on a couple of different areas you would be willing to travel to. Quote

Umm as far as soon I wouln't mind coming with the camper but we normally put it away after the holloween weekend, so I was thinking spring, but I guess we could do like a weekend thing for those who would be interested sometime soon if you would be interested.
