mikey5string Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 I have a few bladed jigs that dont seem to "chatter" as well as others. Some just require slight, steady pressure to get them and keep them going and others will only work if I really rip them. Is there something I can do to the blade to make it "chatter" better? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 28, 2012 Global Moderator Posted September 28, 2012 Bending the end of the blade slighty down or up can help. With the ones I make there seems to be a sweet spot on the amount of bend in the blade to get them to shake really well, might just have to play around with it a little bit. Quote
mikey5string Posted September 28, 2012 Author Posted September 28, 2012 thanks. I tried bending the blade up a little more but still had issues with it vibrating consistently. It is a pure poison model and I really like the look of it, just doesn't vibrate very well. Quote
Megastink Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 I had te same issue. Bending helps. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 29, 2012 Global Moderator Posted September 29, 2012 I would guess it's around a 45 degree bend on mine to get the right wobble. I had a lot of problems with the pure poison wobbling right. Mine would work fine for awhile then it would stop and I'd have to pop the rod to get it to start wobbling again. I couldn't find any real good, upclose pictures of the blade and bend of mine but I got the best I could do. At least you can tell the blade is bent down and get a little bit of an idea of the angle that works for me. Quote
mikey5string Posted October 1, 2012 Author Posted October 1, 2012 It was the pure poison and it wasnt bent straight. I went back with pliers and made the bend straight and about 45 deg and it worked much better. Thanks Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted October 8, 2012 Super User Posted October 8, 2012 A properly made and functioning lure like that has the blade attached directly to the hook eye (no split ring). The blade should hit the head as it moves side to side. That takes a vertical hook eye, not a horizontal hook eye. Use the original as a model. Quote

How would you attach the blade directly to the eye? open the eye with pliers and slip the blade on? I've been having great success with the baits I've been making, the bait really dances with the split ring on there. I've had good luck with the original chatterbaits too though, just wondering how you would go about getting a blade on without a split ring. Quote

I have bought some Chatterbaits that the blade was not attached in the package and when I tried to open the hook eye to attach the blade, the eye broke. There are Chatterbait knockoffs that have the blade attached directly to the hook eye too. That is the only style I buy after testing the split ring types. The split ring adds an additional joint that actually prevents the "chatter" and kills the intended action. Quote
BobP Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 You'll probably need to heat the eye with a torch and open it while hot, then reheat and plunge in water after it's closed to re-temper it. Some hooks are easier to bend - the old brown Mustad hooks can be bent beause they don't have much tempering. Some like Gamakatsu have lots of temper and will break rather than bend. Quote
