MIbassin Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 hey guys- so i was wondering if you are using braid with a lipless crank in submerged weeds, will the braid be able to rip it out and be weedless or would you recommend running it above the grass? Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted September 26, 2012 Super User Posted September 26, 2012 Sure no problem. You don't even have to use braid. Ripping lipless cranks from weeds is a good trigger for strikes. Jeff Quote
mikey5string Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 braid cuts through grass better than anything. Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 the trebles will sometimes pick up grass no matter how hard you rip it depending on what grass your fishing, but it does work in a lot of occasions. Great for reaction strikes. Quote
jkarol24 Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Braid is the best choice for rippin. There is zero stretch so you can clear grass off your bait with a good pop of the rod tip. One tip is to hold your rod perpendicular to the line and watch the tip. As your reeling, if you see it start to load up at all, pop the rod tip. The rod tip will load as the bait gets into the grass before you can actually feel it, so you have a better chance of rippin it free. Also, try those EWG trebles (Gammi r KVD Triple grips are good ones), they seem to catch a little less grass than standard round bend hooks. Quote
Super User deep Posted September 27, 2012 Super User Posted September 27, 2012 Braid is good, but mono/ fluoro should be okay too. As long as you know (can feel) what the bait's doing, you should be fine, I think. Quote
papajoe222 Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 Using braid for this technique is almost a given as mono and fluoro may stretch too much to effectively clear the bait from and of the weeds. What you need to be careful with when it comes to using braid, is keeping your drag setting on the light side and sometimes that means dropping your thumb onto the spool when ripping the lure out of the weeds. You can still take advantage of the reaction strike without letting the lure get hung up in the weeds. As long as you can feel the lure ticking the weed tops, you can give it a rip. You won't be attempting to clear the bait, just trying to trigger a response. I do this when using my regular cranking set-up. Just don't forget to let that bait fall back down to the weed tops. There isn't a better crank out there for doing this than StrikeKing's RedEye Shad. That bait really shines when it's falling. I've lost track of how many times I've had fish hit it as I was counting it down to the weeds. Quote
