I have just gotten into jig fishing and I have caught a few bass using a swim jig but I can't seem to fish a pitching jig in the right way. I currently use a 1/4 black and brown jig with a zoom chunk as a trailer. Any advice on how to fish it, where, when, and what tackle would be great.

If you ate pitching a jig, then you are fishing heavy cover or dock pilings. It!'s more about where you fish then how you fish. The bass must be in shallow cover to catch them pitching a jig. Your tackle needs to be able to hook and control the bass in heavy cover, unless you are targeting juvenile or young adult size bass.

Pitching; start with Denny Bruaer's book, he is an expert on the topic.

A jig is probably the most universal artificial lure there is, will catch any game fish I can think of. There is almost is a limitless number of varieties, I stick with just few types. I use mainly bucktails for all of my inshore and bass fishing, very successful with them. This year I'll be going with some bass style jigs and trailers for a change of pace.

if you are pitching, i am assuming you are fishing shallower cover. fishing shallow is not any different than fishing deep for the most part. when pitching into cover always be aware of watching your line, same as fishing deep. one thing that will come with experience is just how long to leave your jig in on spot. there are times when the bass will take your jig if you just leave it sit for several seconds. most of the time they will have it immediately when it suddenly appears right in front of them. i would advise using a mh 7' rod at least for pitching.

I would try using a heavier jig. Maybe one that is at least 3/8 ounce.
