Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted September 24, 2012 Super User Posted September 24, 2012 Why a squarebill? Whats the purpose of it being square? Are the advantages/disadvantages vs other cranks? Quote
soccplayer07 Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 I use them in shallow water. I like the way the deflect off of cover especially wood. The come through wood extremely well. Quote
cast_and_destroy Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Deflects off of cover very well , I cant think of any disadvantages. Definetley one of my go-to lures. Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 deflects off cover better, also has different wobble action Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted September 24, 2012 Author Super User Posted September 24, 2012 Cool. Thanks guys. Had one given to me but haven't fished it yet. Just wonderin. Quote
Jake P Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 To give a little more definition to a square bill. They are shallow water cranks. most run from 0-5 ft. The square bill helps the crank dig into the bottom and deflect off of cover better than a traditional round billed crankbait. They can be thrown near brush and trees and rocks and not get hung up like a most other treble hook lures would. I am most successful throwing mine near the shore early in the morning when fish are actively feeding in the shallows. I hooked up with 6 fish on my first 10 casts this morning throwing a KVD 1.5 in Gizzard Shad and letting it dig into and deflect off of the rocky bottom in about 4 ft of water. These are lures you cant be afraid to throw into a place where any other treble hook would get hung up. Good luck! -JP Quote

Super User MarkH024 Posted September 25, 2012 Super User Posted September 25, 2012 I love throwing square bills. As stated, they're great for deflecting off of cover and structure. One of my confidence baits and they'll work pretty much year round from my experience. Enjoy! Quote
Arv Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 ! I had to stop watching. Felt the bait monkey climbing up my back to whisper "buy these," into my ear. 1 Quote
mikey5string Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Do they make them bigger than 2.5"? Id like to try them but I cant imagine throwing such a small bait on a casting rod. Do you use spinning gear? I have a handful in my tacklebox but I never use them .With the exception of lipless, cranks are not one of my confidence baits. Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 the 2.5 are pretty big and cast well with casting rods....so does the 1.5 believe it or not. The 1.0 may be a lil small to cast very far unless your using a lighter setup. I think lucky craft makes a 3.5 not 100% sure though... 1 Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted September 26, 2012 Super User Posted September 26, 2012 On our Home Page, the lure I have rigged is the LC RC 3.5, purple back/ chartreuse belly. Quote

The ones i had were actually the small and medium sized 2" so I went out and picked up 2 new 2.5" and they feel better. I put one on and took a few casts in the yard and they cast fine. Looking forward to using them this weekend. Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 try picking up some KVD 1.5 & 2.5's also...should have no prob casting them, as far as bandit goes maybe their bodies are a lil smaller im not sure as i dont own alot of bandits. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted September 27, 2012 Super User Posted September 27, 2012 I like the KVD square bills too. Another thing you can do to make them even less snag happy is to lay the front treble down like it would be as if the bait was moving. then snip off that front exposed hook. I have done this on the majority of mine and it makes them even less snag prone and i haven't noticed any difference in hook up rate. Quote

Do you use spinning gear? I have a handful in my tacklebox but I never use them .With the exception of lipless, cranks are not one of my confidence baits. Unless you're using a really stiff rod, you should be able to cast these things fairly well. I use a BPS cranking stick for all but my really deep cranks and although I'm not getting the distance I would out of a bigger bait, I don't have any problems throwing them. Cranks are a great tool for both covering water and giving you a good 'read' on what's going on down there, not to mention darn good fish catchers. Spinnerbaits were never one of my confidence baits until I went out one day with just a handfull of them. By the end of the day, even though I didn't catch a lot of fish, I became comfortable with them. Now, there's always one tied on to one of my rods. Give it a try with cranks sometime. They may become one of your favs. 1 Quote
mikey5string Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 the ones I had were very small. under 2" for sure. I thought that was "standard size". I went to Dicks and picked up a few 2.5" KVD models and they are substantially larger and I had no problem casting them in the yard. I really like the looks of them and I am pumped to try them Saturday. I have been having mediocre luck with a spinner and chatter bait, this might be the little change up that turns them on. Only problem is that now I have a new thing to buy compulsively. Do you guys throw the small ones? Do you prefer a certain size? Quote

Otherwise if I'm not catching fish the old reliables come out. If I keep fishing what I know I never learn or develop confidence on new lures techniques. So I force myself to learn Quote
TNBassin' Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 What is the best way to get the KVD 1.5s to run a tad deeper without messing up the action?? Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted September 29, 2012 Super User Posted September 29, 2012 What is the best way to get the KVD 1.5s to run a tad deeper without messing up the action?? Bigger front hook, and thin line like braid. Quote
