xmoto071 Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 I am new to this region and just got back into fishing. I am having one heck of a time trying to catch smallmouth bass. I like fishing the Allegheny River because its close and easy to get to. I also know there are plenty of fish in that river, but I cant catch'em. I get a few nibbles on the tubes I just recently learned about, but the fish just don't want to hit it hard enough to even try to set the hook. The River is new to me and I will keep the boat moving. Could I be moving too fast? If so is there any way to slow it down without standing on the trolling motor or dragging an ancor which I don't want to do? Right now this past two weeks I can see what seems like millions minnows around the boat launch. Thats got to be some kind of sign but what should it be telling me? Often times i can see fish following my bait right up to thr boat. How do I get them to take it? I am gust looking for a little guidence if anyone can help. Thank You Brian Hill New Member Quote
flyhatch Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 tubes are always a good choice. here are a few others to try. 1/8th ounce cavatron buzzbaits with trailer hook installed white skirt or white and chart. white 3.5 inch flukes texas rigged or scrounger head smaller spooks or a spitin image topwater poppers small jigs like a bitsy bug with a craw or fluke trailer bomber craw cranks or white or shad colored drop shot robo worm or those berkley minnows these are proven baits in my book. good luck and let us know how you do. e Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted September 24, 2012 Super User Posted September 24, 2012 get some 3 or 4 inch curly tail grubs, riverside makes them in smoke, you should be able to find them locally, an 1/8 ounce jig head and go fishing. you will catch a bunch of smallies, there is no better bait for sheer numbers. As you begin to get your confindence you will change to tubes, craws etc because you will catch better fish on these, but for sheer numbers you can't beat the grub. Quote
