bleedingshrimp Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Does anyone use a mono leader on braid instead of flouro? Does it undermine the purpose of braided line? Would it be an issue to use 12 lb. mono leader with 20 lb. braid? Quote
fishking247 Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 depends on what you're doing. i never use fluoro only mono. i only use a leader when fishing topwater so the braid does not foul the hooks of the lure. another reason people use leaders is for abrasion resistance against rocks, but when i fish rocks i fish straight mono. 12lb leader is fine for 20lb braid. i use trilene xt or big game for leader material to sum it up i don't use a leader because bass are line shy but i use it to help improve my techniques. 1 Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted September 18, 2012 Super User Posted September 18, 2012 Does anyone use a mono leader on braid instead of flouro? Does it undermine the purpose of braided line? Would it be an issue to use 12 lb. mono leader with 20 lb. braid? I don't use mono because of the lack of sensitivity and the stretch. I use braid for the no stretch, no memory and ultra sensitivity. I prefer a fluoro leader. On my 50 braid I go with a 17 pound leader. 30 pound I go with 12 pound. A leader does defeat the purpose of using higher pound braid, but when you need that stealth in clear water its the way to go. You could go straight Fluoro, but braid has no memory and that is the main reason I use it. Edited to add, I fish top water about 75% of the time so my reasons for no using mono is completely different than other techniques. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted September 18, 2012 Super User Posted September 18, 2012 I do - Berkley Trilene Big Game, mostly in Green; in everything from 10-25lb test. It does everything I ask it to do at a very reasonable price. For a leader smaller than 10 lb I use Yozuri hybrid. I've given up on flourocarbon completely. It probably just me, but it has failed me more times than I'd like to admit. Additionally, I like the little stretch the 10-15ft of mono provides; especially during the last stages of a spirited fight close to the boat. The mono is getting the brunt of the work and might be less likely to pull a hook. So, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. A-Jay 2 Quote
Super User deep Posted September 18, 2012 Super User Posted September 18, 2012 I use mono leader in appropriate strength. It does have less abrasion resistance (compared to fluoro), but I got used to it. IMO a leader doesn't undermine the purpose of the braided line; there are specific reasons why I don't use straight braid. Quote
BASSHUNTER1961 Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 I always use a mono leader with braid, never frouro. I use 14# test with 30# braid. Quote

papajoe222 Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 I use mono exclusively when adding a leader as the only time I use one is when I'm C-rigging. That little bit of bouyancy that 18-24in. leader has may not make much of a difference, but it gives me more confidence than flouro. This is a situation where visibility isn't an issue because of the depth of water and the stretch in that short of a section of mono isn't going to loose me any fish. The only downside is that mono doesn't transmit information as well, but again we're talking short lengths of line, not yards. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted September 19, 2012 Super User Posted September 19, 2012 My mono leaders run all over the map depending on the cover and the species. I mention other species because I know Bleedingshrimp has mentioned redfish, 12 lb leader won't always get it done there. I'm a strictly a swivel user and my leaders are 2' or less, the stretch is hardly noticeable. Many people use straight braid and I catch some fish that are very line shy with steel leaders, I really don't put that much stock in being stealth for those reasons. My leaders are used to make hook tangles easier to unravel and quite often I pick up larger fish with my hand on the leader not the braid, in fact a swivel kinda makes a little handle. A leader will have limited stretch but enough to allow you with the aid or your rod to trampoline a decent sized fish up from a sea wall. I say decent I don't mean 15# but 7 or 8 is done all the time. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted September 19, 2012 Super User Posted September 19, 2012 Fluorocarbon lines are monofilament lines. I think your question is choosing between fluorocarbon and nylon lines for a leader. oe Quote
