AllDay Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Now that I think about it - if we're using the honor system or taking photos of fish with the ruler, there's no reason to hold them in the live well - just catch and release. I plan to photo with ruler as evidence. Quote

No reason to risk killing fish for a bragging rights tourney. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 10, 2012 Author Global Moderator Posted October 10, 2012 Well it was a lot tougher today for Hi Salenity and I, but I still almost caught 40. A lot more small fish today, no topwater, spinnerbait, or trap fish at all. Had a couple hit a spinnerbait and trap and not hook up but not even a boil on topwater. There was just way less activity on the water today with it being so calm and cold this morning I believe, 30 degrees at the ramp this morning and it felt like it. It was a Ned rig day for sure but even that was slow most of the day. We got a few on cranks and Curt caught a few on a Mepps but that was it. We finally figured them out pretty good in the last hour. Backed of the dam and started casting into 10' of water with the ned rig and fishing it SLOW, started getting bit almost every cast. We probably caught almost as many fish in the last hour as we did the whole rest of the day. Wasn't a multispecies day at all either, smallmouth, 1 spot, 1 sunfish, and several whites. No drum, cats, walleye, or crappie. Curt had a nice largemouth hooked but it got in a brushpile and pulled off. My 2 biggest of the day were 16.5 and 17, both on a Ned rig. Quote
kylek Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 sounds like it was still a good day at Melvern. I can't remember the last time I caught 40 fish in a day. Quote
kanasbassfisher08 Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 well still caught some good fish but it is slow for blue at melvern but it changed from last week lets home it changes from this week for the better its getting close im starting to twitch a little Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 11, 2012 Author Global Moderator Posted October 11, 2012 It was slow and honestly probably caught almost half of them in the last hour of the day once we finally figured them out pretty good. Quote
AllDay Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 I'm kind of hoping for a cold, grind it out day like you had and like last Saturday. Its like the football game in the sleet and snow Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 12, 2012 Author Global Moderator Posted October 12, 2012 that lake is best when its windy. water looks still. Yep, it was really nice out as far as the weather goes but that usually doesn't add up to good fishing. Water was slick almost all day and not hardly a cloud in the sky. Clouds and some wind usually adds up to the best days out there for me. Quote

Just checked the 10 day forecast for Melvern and it shows partly cloudy with a NNE wind at 9mph. High of 68*. I wonder how many times this will change in a week!!!! Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 13, 2012 Author Global Moderator Posted October 13, 2012 Hopefully they'll get some of this rain and it will stain the water up a little bit! Never seen that lake as clear as it was Wednesday. It was as clear in my dirty water areas down lake as it normally is by the dam and the dam you could see bottom 5-6 foot deep. The marina is even more clear but we didn't hardly fish it because of that. Also, provided it gets approved a friend is going to cover the second half of my shift Saturday morning so I should be able to make it there for the take off Quote
retro basser Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Hoooley schmoley... i was just wondering why noone is talking about the 'Fall Classic' much on the other thread and now i know!! Looks like i got some reading to do! Dont know if it's been mentioned yet but I was thinkin we should at least have the option available to use the ramp on the west of the state park instead of the one on the dam side. When you get out of that cove you can either go deep or shallow by taking a left or right depending on your plan and the lake is pretty much split in half. Whaddya guys think? Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted October 13, 2012 Super User Posted October 13, 2012 I like that ramp. The only problem I see is I don't want to have our "afterparty" in the parking lot. If we launch from the other ramp we can stop and eat at one of the campsites on the way out like last time. And Retro, Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted October 13, 2012 Super User Posted October 13, 2012 I'm going to go get some Brats Today, how are we doing as far as food grills plates...Do we need to get a list of things we need so the people that haven't volunteered to bring anything yet can see whats needed? Has EVERYONE that said they were going checked in lately and said that they were still coming? Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted October 13, 2012 Super User Posted October 13, 2012 Hey Blue, I have a question about the rules. You put "All black bass (large, small, spots) qualify" Don't they need to be a minimum of 15'' to qualify? Quote

I sure hope the weather is better next Saturday than it is today!!!! Quote

I guess if someone wanted to launch from that ramp they could, I just picked the other one because it has pretty good fishing right by the ramp in case someone didn't want to drive far to fish. Normally in a tournament that allows trailering what you do is wait until everyone else is putting their boats in the water for launch then you can drive to the ramp you want to launch from and then you have to be back with your boat and trailer at take out time. I like that ramp. The only problem I see is I don't want to have our "afterparty" in the parking lot. If we launch from the other ramp we can stop and eat at one of the campsites on the way out like last time. And Retro, I was wondering why Retro had been so quiet, I guess we know now. Has EVERYONE that said they were going checked in lately and said that they were still coming? I have a list of what everyone is bringing on the front page but not of what we need. We have most of what we would really need but we could probably use some more burgers/brauts/dogs, buns for any of those, and some sides like potato salad, coleslaw, pasta salad. I have heard from everyone either on here or by text except tritonguy and everyone sounds like they're planning on being there still, weather permitting. Hey Blue, I have a question about the rules. You put "All black bass (large, small, spots) qualify" Don't they need to be a minimum of 15'' to qualify? Nope, that's the good thing about a paper tourney, as long as you can get an accurate measurement on your board then you can put them down. I don't know how bad anyone wants to have a couple 10 inchers on their sheet but I guess it's better than nothing! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 14, 2012 Author Global Moderator Posted October 14, 2012 I use 20# braid at .009" diameter which is like the diameter of 5# mono. Is it the opaque green that is the problem or the line diameter? You can use braid and probably be fine but I would suggest using a short fluoro leader. I've been using bright white Nanofil with my Ned rig with a short fluoro leader and haven't been having any problems with getting bit. The leader is much more abrasion resistant than braid or nano also, which helps a little with the zebras aka "razor clams". Quote
Wachati Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Team names?? Think it could be fun to see who can come up with the best. Quote
pbrussell Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Drew and I went out today. The wind was awful. I think he ended up with 5 smallies, the biggest being 17 1/2 inches. I on the other hand was catching everything but smallies. I only ended up with one and it was a dink. The white bass sure did like me today though. Throw in some drum and sunfish for good measure and I was a multi species expert. Let's hope the wind is not like it was today. The entire lake was whitecapped with the exception of a few spots on the north shore. We were not able to fish much water. I'll chalk up our poor performance to that. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 14, 2012 Author Global Moderator Posted October 14, 2012 I can't believe you guys even tried to go out today! I imagine all the rain last night and then the wind today probably didn't help you guys any. Usually when it's windy the best fishing is in the wind out there but that isn't an option sometimes. tritonguy Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 My wife makes pretty good potato salad. Put me down for that and I will bring some brats to. Quote
