Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 8, 2012 Author Global Moderator Posted October 8, 2012 are you guys sure you want to put in at the state park? that puts the slower boats at one end/side of the lake. btw wish i could attend. ive got the races and Deftones that weekend. It worked pretty well last time and it's paved the whole way to the ramp so the guys with nicer boats don't have to go down any nasty gravel roads. There's plenty of good fishing close by and several guys have the state park sticker so at least not everyone will have to buy the day pass. I've only ever launched from the Marina or state park ramps and I've been boycotting the marina ever since they ran me off from fishing the docks (not the gas/fishing dock). I don't understand how they can decide to make the area around the docks on a public reservoir private?? I'm sure we'll try to make these get togethers a regular deal so hopefully you can make the next one. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 8, 2012 Author Global Moderator Posted October 8, 2012 Thanks blue I have some larger size roadrunners I should be able to use. I'm getting around to rigging up and I found a few old blades I didn't know I had and that if it got really windy I'd run something like this: although Ive never tried it before... Never seen or tried anything other than a rigged Creme Scoundrel. I would expect lots of follows/short strikes, especially if you get into some whites. as far as the road runners a 1/8oz size should work just fine. Quote

kylek Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 First post over here, recently moved to the Columbia Mo area from southern Ill for work. Man you all get into the smallies! Can't make this get together but will set aside a weekend when spring rolls around. Kylek, I wasnt able to make it down to LOZ for the bass bash, how'd it treat ya? Talked to a buddy of mine early this afternoon and at that point 6.57 took the 60k. Lots ofnice fish despite widespread lake turnover and a wicked cold front that moved through just before the weekend. It was a tough weekend for sure. We couldn't get anything good to bite. We caught a few small ones and lots of whites and even a walleye. There was a 13 yr old boy that was in the lead on Saturday, it would have been nice to see him win 1st place. I think he ended up 2nd, still a nice chunk of 20k prize money. Quote

AllDay Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 Thought I'd start a thread specifically for this so any members that aren't on the sight as often might see it and not miss out if they're wanting to attend. Saturday October 20th there will be a get together at Melvern Lake for any KC area guys interested in attending. We'll have a free bragging rights paper tourny (no weigh in, just measuring fish), with food and drinks afterwards. No entry fee and no prizes for the tournament, it's just for fun and bragging rights afterwards. The only thing you'll be asked to contribute is some food or drinks if you're planning on staying and eating and some gas money for your boater if you're fishing as a nonboater, especially since it's already almost $4 a gallon. Some of the details still need to be hammered out (start time, who's bringing what, who's fishing with who) but we'll get that all figured out on here. If you haven't already sent me a PM and you're planning on coming and if you're wanting to fish as a boater or nonboater please do so, that way we have a headcount and can figure out the rest of the details. As of right now I have: Hi Salenity (Curtis) & Wachti (Peter)-team Chris Schauer & Sean-team retro basser (Matt) &Busy-team Kylek (Kyle) & father in law (Darrell)-team Bluebasser86 (Clayton) & kanasbasser08 (Chris)-team Basshunter0731 (Jon) & Ricky-Team tritonguy & AllDay (Dave)-team pbrussell (Blake) & CCC Drew (Drew)-team So it could be a pretty good turnout it looks like. We had one in late spring and minus the wind and one painful accident it was a lot of fun and I encourage anyone interested in attending and meeting some of the guys from the board! Food list: Bluebasser86-Grill, charcoal, beans Hi Salenity-brauts CCC Drew-hotdogs/buns KlyeK-chips, dessert Put me down for hamburger patties (frozen)/buns w/ condiments: tomato, onions, ketchup, mustard. I won't cut the tomato and onions, I'll leave them whole to be cut on the spot. Will store these on ice. Also, can you post the tourney start/stop times and rules on this original post too? For instance, where did we land - total length? how many fish (top 5)? total weight? Just want to make sure everyone's clear. Quote
AllDay Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 Fished Melvern this Saturday from 9AM - 5PM. Caught 74 total including two 17" and this 18.5" fatty: Here's one 17" SMB and a nice LMB that bit almost simultaneously with the SMB: Blue/Drew, I'm glad you had a good outing in your previous post. You've got a challenger with me for the gold. Bring your A game fellas, let the games begin. Quote
kylek Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 Sounds like another fine day at Melvern. I am very excited to get there on the 20th. I hope someone can give me some ideas on where to fish as we have never seen the lake before. What were you guys catching them on? Quote

That is a good spot were you caught that first smallmouth, I've had several really nice ones from that area. Hopefully the nice smallies will continue to bite through the 20th but you can't ever be sure. Smallmouth are kind of like women, just when you think you have them figured out a little bit you find out what you thought you knew is wrong all the sudden They're usually pretty patternable during the fall at Melvern it seems though. Trying to keep it as simple as possible for everyone to make it easier to have a good time. At the bottom I mentioned having other categories for the weigh in for "other" fish caught while we're out there. I'll only add that if you guys are interested in doing that also. Like most of you I'm a multispecies guy so it's always interesting to me to see what other kinds of fish everyone caught while fishing for bass but if nobody wants to add categories for walleye, crappie, whites, cats, and rough fish then I won't bother adding it. If I forgot to include something or if anyone doesn't understand any part of it let me know and I'll fix/explain it the best I can. Quote

Food list: Bluebasser86-Grill, charcoal, beans Hi Salenity-brauts CCC Drew-hotdogs/buns KlyeK-chips, dessert Allday-Burgers/condiments Tournament rules/regs: Start time-7am End time-3pm Standard BASS rules apply (no live bait/1 rod per person/fish must be caught following all state laws). Fish are measured with mouth closed, bumped to the front edge of the board with the tail pinched, measure to the closest 1/4". All black bass (large, small, spots) qualify. Measurements are on the honor system (it's for fun and I don't believe anyone on here has an ego big enough to feel the need to exaggerate to win nothing other than bragging rights). Feel free to take pictures of your fish to show off afterwards and/or weigh them but it isn't required for the weigh in. It will be the total lengths of the longest 5 fish caught per boat/team. Doesn't matter if one person caught all of them, it's the overall length of the 5 longest combined. We're only doing measurements to prevent killing fish by carrying them around in a livewell all day. Plus there probably wouldn't be many fish brought in with the 18" length limit on smallmouth anyways. The main objective here is for everyone to catch some fish and have a good time and get to meet some of the guys from the board so remember to be courteous to everyone involved and others on the water. There's 7,000 acres for us to spread around on so if someone is catching fish please don't park on top of them unless you get the ok from them to share the spot regardless of if they're in the tournament or not. Just for fun I may add some spots for those inevitable "other" fish too since most of us are multispecies anglers. I'd be interested to hear who catches the biggest walleye/crappie/white bass/catfish/drum/ or whatever else we dredge out of the lake. This way if anyone is thinking about coming back to the lake to fish for something other than bass they might be able to get an idea of what else they could catch. This is just an idea I'm kicking around because I've seen it done in other tournaments and it's always interesting to hear what everyone catches while fishing for bass. Thanks sir and yes, please add more categories for largest walleye, white bass etc. I guarantee some of us will catch big ones in those categories and it's fun tracking those as a side show to the black bass main event! AllDay Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 It was in the mid-upper 40's when we hit the waters, northern winds 10-15 mph and a mere 2 days after a cold front came through. The Ned rig dominated crank baits lakewide on that day, hands down. Go with 3" grubs and/or 3" cut ZinkerZ on jigheads. Quote
AllDay Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 Here I thought I was doing alright on my first outing out there by catching around 15 fish and you catch 70... Sigh. Busy Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 hey just letting you know i wouldnt plan on using braid with those just because the smallies are a sensitive fish when it come to line sometimes so if u dont want to lose them i wouldnt use them even know they look really good but most small mouth fisherman dont use larger line then 10 i use 12 for my cranks but thats just my openion but looks like it could be a solid bait for smallies no joke. ive seen some like it with the spinners on the front but never used them but getting really excited for 2 weeks I use 20# braid at .009" diameter which is like the diameter of 5# mono. Is it the opaque green that is the problem or the line diameter? Quote

kylek Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 What color are you guys throwing on the Ned rig? Also would a regular senko or Yum dinger work just as well? Quote
AllDay Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 Go with green pumpkin or stay in the browns and greens. All white Dingers on a jighead also worked and landed white bass, SMB, and Spotted. I suggest keeping your plastics to 3" or less. Not to say they won't bite on 3" or larger though! Quote
Doc-Drew Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 What color are you guys throwing on the Ned rig? Also would a regular senko or Yum dinger work just as well? Yes senkos and dingers work they just don't hold up as well. Typically after 1-2 fish on those you need to change them. I went a whole day and only changed worms once and that was to change from 1/8 oz to a 1/16 oz. Quote
kylek Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 Thanks guys. Guess I will need to make another trip to the tackle shop..... Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 9, 2012 Author Global Moderator Posted October 9, 2012 Thanks guys. Guess I will need to make another trip to the tackle shop..... Wal Mart usually carries the Strike King Zero, it's the same thing as a zinker basically. Don't forget the super glue! Hi Salenity and I will be headed to Melvern tomorrow and it sounds like we'll be enjoying a rare calm day on Melvern. Of course they're saying 5-10 and you can usually add 5mph down there and it's supposed to be coming from the west when we'll be fishing the east end so it will probably feel like 30 Quote
