I recieved my Gen 3 Revo S today and had a chance to fish it right away. This reel is on par with my Premier and i only paid $101 for this Revo S. I have a Curado, and quite frankly, this new Revo is far superior to the Curado for less money. It seems like these new Revo S's already have quite the following. It almost seems like a swift kick to Shimano. Shimano will always be Shimano due to there loyal users. But do you think Abu closed the gap a little bit as "the best reel maker in the world." I understand that it takes time for this gen 3 Revo S to show its true colors, but so far i am beyond impressed.

Abu Garcia was the king when round baitcasters were the norm. They've had a difficult time convincing anglers that they make a good, low profile baitcaster. Will this reel eliminate that stigma? I doubt it. Shimano is like McDonalds in that it has top billing, but just like MickeyD's their share of the market has declined steadily as new competitors start eating away at their slice of the pie. If Shimano sits back on their reputation, they'll loose that top of the mountain to some eager beaver like Garcia. Daiwa and Quatum are likely more worried than Shimano IMO

I wouldn't put it that way, Abu has been making good stuff for a long time.

Is that a Kimber Raptor you have as your profile pic?

I love the Lew's top end reels myself, but it will take more than a couple years to see if they aree going to be the timex reels that Shimanos are! If they will hold up like the Shimanos there a steel, but only after a few years can we determine that. Right now though I can assure Shimano ain't scared, and I assure you it will be some time before they would have to be. The only thing these companies are doing is drawing attention, and you can be sure Shimano has plenty of time to react! and if necessary they will! Guaranteed!!

Kind of like they did to Abu and Diawa since you mentioned it, that was a good example of what happens when the have competition with the Calcutta! I don't think there to worried about round reels either.

You have a Kimber and a Les Baer? Your wife and accountant must love you, Lol. Get yourself a Wilson Combat to put the cherry on top. Beautiful 1911.

I ordered it from tackle warehouse when they had there 15% off sale. I ordered a swimbait and 2 packs of Paca craws, that put the total price of the Revo at $101.

Thanks! I have 9 1911s, I'm done with gun purchases for a while, but may very well add a Wilson down the road.

Funny thing I thought of after checkin this thread. Couple shops near me push Tsunami saltwater poles as the step up from low end Shimano/Shakespeare rods without making the price jump to ST. Croix etc. I love Shimano reels my self have a dozen or so spinners and only problem I ever had was on a brand new baitrunner couldn't hear the secondary drag. Sent it in had a new one in 3 days no probs on this one. Although I love Shimano I won't hesitate on trying a new brand.

Abu Garcia is definitely upping the ante with the new Revo line. Abu also made a smart move by creating the revo shop. Can't wait to trick out my S to make it even lighter.

I don't know that I'd agree they've had a hard time convincing people about their low profile reels. I think at one time they weren't known at all for them, even though they did make a few. Their round reels were much better. But since the Revo first hit stores I think they've been right up there in popularity with the rest of the pack.

They do make a smooth reel, and I have owned a few. My problem is longevity, and after fishing some Revos for a few years, they just dont seem to stay the way the Shimanos do. My Shimanos that I have had for 4 years are smoother than when they were new. The Abus did not seem to stay that way after a while, so they had to go. I have looked at the Lews, but after taking one apart in the store, it seems to be the same design style as the PQ, Revo, Fleuger, so I will not bother. Only time will tell, and Shimano has been a proven product of that, to me anyway.

Yeah but longevity doesnt play into the equation anymore, if you are the manufacturer. You simply upgrade it in two years play up the hype and everybody has to have the latest and greatest before durability becomes a visable issue.

To some sure, but us poor folk dont care about latest and greatest, and having to have a new model every year. I have reels that are 5 years old and perform and look like new, if not better. I will keep my longevity, and assurance that my reels will perform cast after cast, and not leaving me in the middle of a tourney with a down rig. Keep the new POS models that I consider "throw away", with the cent. and mag. brake systems that are to me a gimmick.

You bring up a good point LMG, I have been fishing Shimano exclusively for years, until I bought the G6 Curado this year, which I sold for 20 bucks more than I bought it for two weeks later, (because of the 30 dollar rebate). This is when I bought a Lews Tournament and now own three more of their top of the line reels. I found 15 years ago, I could fish my Shimano's for 3 to 5 years and recoup most of my original cost, and buy new models for very little cash. I will see if that can be done with the new Lew's reels in a couple years. I sold 3 older Curado's and a Castaic this spring and never lost more than $10.00 on any one of them, same with 5 Stradics, FI, FH, and MgFB's. I even used to run Symetre's on my Charter boat for 2 or 3 years, and before they started looking to bad would cost me about 10 to 15 bucks a reel to sell theem on E--- and buy new. This has only worked for me with the better reels in the Shimano line, and they are kept in top shape as I serviced reels as part of my Charter Fishing business, which I still do, only time will tell if the demand is there for these Lew's I have now, or any of the new latest and greatest better than Shimano reels we hear about now or in the future. Time will tell?????????

That was my point..... Revo's are like Kia's. Look pretty, feel smooth, but before you know it the paint job takes a dump. The pig metal clutch breaks etc. etc. After awhile you notice there arent many Kias on the road that made it past warranty. I just rank your Shimano to be no better than the Revo. *******Lews aint nothing but a Revo that went out a different back door of the factory.

We all know opinions are like buttholes. Its a Ford v's chevy debate at its best.
