dnb Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 I have a really good jerkbait bite going on right now catching spots and largemouth. I have been throwing the Lucky Craft 78 american shad. This is the color and size that has been the most productive (through trial and error). However I am losing one of these per trip getting hung up or fish hanging me up in heavy current. Can anyone recommend any better alternative? I need something with some weight to it as the wind is in play and I deal with mostly baitcasters. Its tough paying for gas/oil losing one or two of these baits and trying to cash and making it profitable Quote

dnb Posted February 16, 2010 Author Posted February 16, 2010 hmm nice concept.. Im fishing 14-17 pound flouro.. so this could work good .. Losing a 16$ lure not ony cost money but effects my attitude during a tourney Quote
Nine Miler Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Its definitely cheaper to replace your hooks than your bait, but those smart links are fairly pricey themselves. In my opinion, probably not worth it until you get into the $15-$20 bait and up range. Quote
dnb Posted February 16, 2010 Author Posted February 16, 2010 yeah checked them out. $$$ Any company make a jerkbait that dives and suspends 4-6 feet without the price tag of a luckycraft. I bought some smaller Rapala Slash baits but they weigh 1/4 and is a tad bit of wind gets going.. I'm screwed Maybe I need to buy bigger baits and forget about my superstitions about size. Or give my spinning rod a workout Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted February 16, 2010 Super User Posted February 16, 2010 I really like the Owner Cultiva Rip 'n Minnows, they are a bit pricey at $10 but thats 5-10 less than Pointers. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted February 16, 2010 Super User Posted February 16, 2010 haven't used them but I plan to try them soon: http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/crankbait-bodies/341521.aspx# they look just like Pointers. You have to add your own split rings and hooks. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted February 16, 2010 Super User Posted February 16, 2010 These are great jerkbaits http://www.toplakstackle.com/XCAlibur_Twitch_Bait_s/41.htm and here's a few more colors http://www.***.com/XCalibur_Xt3_Twitch_Bait_/descpage-XT3TB.html and the deep diver http://www.***.com/Xcalibur_XT3_Deep_Twitch_Bait/descpage-XCX3DTB.html Quote

Shane Procell Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 I like a Rapala HJ12 Jerk Bait. in Tenn. Shad. 4'-6' suspending diver. I don't leave home without 1/2 dozen. Quote
BigBrotherThunda Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 If you hae and Academy Sports near you, they have the H20 suspending jerk shad, whcih looks alot like a pointer (literally) and gets down 5-7 feet. Ive had great luck with them so far this winter. 3-4 dollar price range. Quote

Great baits! Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted February 16, 2010 Super User Posted February 16, 2010 The XCalibur's are fantastic baits. The Pearl Melon Xt3 works great in clear water. Falcon Quote
midnighthrasher Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Rapala XR-10. A bunch of colors, tough, durable, under 10$ and thet catch fish!!! Quote
stratos 375 Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 try smithwick super rogues, it's all I ever throw, and I throw them a lot. They are inexpensive (6$) & very durable. I keep at least 3 dozen in my boat at all times. Floaters & suspending. I'll let you in on a secret, the pretty paint jobs on lucky craft's attracts the fisherman more than the fish. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted February 16, 2010 Super User Posted February 16, 2010 I'll let you in on a secret, the pretty paint jobs on lucky craft's attracts the fisherman more than the fish. ;D I probably wouldn't have even responded if you had said that about any other Lucky Craft, but the Pointer? Seriously? I'm confident in saying that there's a couple Lucky Craft baits that dont live up to the high price tag but the Pointer is worth every penny and then some. Quote
dnb Posted February 16, 2010 Author Posted February 16, 2010 Another thought I have been wrestling with is throwing the baits on 30lb braid. The water color is gin and there is current to break up sun penetration(however I am catching alot of my fish in current breaks). How much force is needed to straighted out the hooks or pull a lure free from a snag? Like I said I was using 14-17 pd fluorocarbon. Thoughts? Comments? Quote
jarhead1970 Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Have you tried the Norman Razor Minnow....about 1/4 the cost of a LC? Quote
stratos 375 Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 five, them luckys sure are pretty, but I've never been a true believer in any of the high quality paint job lures. I'm sure it would provide an edge in the 45-55 degree window where the fish has a chance to really eyeball the lure, or in some of the gin clear lakes. I'd just rather work a little harder with a cheaper lure. Once the water gets past 55, I'm twitchin her for all she's worth. The fish I catch on it come from under it or behind it & wallop it. They don't really take the time to stop and admire the 20$ hand painted craftsmanship. Most of the time I'm throwin a jerkbait, I'm up on an 20" platform & my eyes rarely leave the bait, so I see 95% of my strikes, most of the fish are keying in on the profile & the flash and the cadence, not the finish. I'll stick with black/ blue or gold & chrome. Off the shelf colors have worked great for me so far. However, I'm not entirely closed minded, If I found one of them hangin on a bush somewhere, I might give it a try. But, I'd never actually buy one of them. Are there any other Rogue fanatics out there? Anywhere? Quote

Are there any other Rogue fanatics out there? Anywhere? I understand where you're coming from here but if you think that Lucky Crafts are all about pretty paint jobs, you've missed the boat, especially when talking about a Pointer. I've got a box full of Rogues and have no problems catching fish with them and have for years and years. That said, when the Pointer showed up on the scene, jerkbait fishing went to a whole new level for me. Quote
stratos 375 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 five, thank you for the continued dialog, with your last statement you have piqued my interest. Specifically, in what way did the pointer take your jerkbait fishing to a new level? I will admit, I have never used one. Maybe I will order a few after all. Do tell. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 17, 2010 Super User Posted February 17, 2010 The Lucky Craft Pointer defines "jerkbaits". They suspend perfectly and just as importantly, have a balancing system that make them the longest casting lure on the planet! Two lures you "must have" are the LC Pointer and Sammy. 8-) Quote
Super User 5bass Posted February 17, 2010 Super User Posted February 17, 2010 The internal weight system allows for long casts, perfect flat suspension and gives the bait a nice rolling action even with the slightest movement. The weight system is the key because it controls many things. In the early spring I like to hop points and throw the jerkbait. Up until I started using the Pointers, I basically threw Husky Jerks and Rogues. Getting a limit of decent keepers sometimes meant I had to hit 10 points. Once I started using the Pointers, I was catching more fish per spot and not having to move as often to get bit. The Pointer, for me at least, puts fish in the boat faster than any other jerkbait ever has. I know I'm catching fish that I wouldn't be if I was throwing something else. It's become a real confidence bait for me. I always feel like I can catch a fish when I have a Pointer tied on. Anyone who finds themselves in a jerkbait situation should at least try a Pointer.
