real_horror_show Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 I am really in need of a new rod and reel. The one I have is one of those combo sets you would buy at wal mart. I am on a tight budget, but know that I want a quality rod and reel for catching Big Largemouth's. I am very fond of baitcasters but would settle for a nice spinning reel. Any suggestions? Quote

RyneB Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I dont know your budget. But you can get a Abu Garcia Black Max for $60 and a Abu Garcia Vendetta rod for $80. Thats a decent budget minded combo to me. If you want to go spinning. Bass Pro sells a Shimano Sienna for $30. It is a great reel for the price. Bass Pro also has there XPS line of spinning rods for $99 that are nice. I have heard Berkley Lightning rods are good rods for the price, but the only one i have seen use in person snapped on a hookset. Quote
Super User deep Posted September 12, 2012 Super User Posted September 12, 2012 How tight is your budget? There are some nice used casting reels on the fleamarket here. I'd not buy a cheapo new baitcaster that's a pain to fish with and will probably fall apart after a season. Quote
dale.m Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 Find a cheap setup in the flea market thread. I recently got a 200 dollar reel for 70 bucks that was in perfect condition. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted September 12, 2012 Super User Posted September 12, 2012 Buy a Chronarch and your set for life. Mount it on an Abu Veritas, and you wont fish anything else. Quote

This x2 The Veritas can he had for 80 shipped in some places. Chronarch has high reviews. Also look at the Revo line of reels and the Pro Qualifier from Bass Pro. I have one and love is just as much as my Revos What ever you do or go with, I suggest getting something of quality. Quote

Super User WRB Posted September 14, 2012 Super User Posted September 14, 2012 You have a few choices; Cabelas and BPS sale items, if you are looking for a new rod/reel combo, or want ads on the forum sites and EBay. A lot of bass anglers are always upgrading rod and reels, last years top of the line is this years close out. Buy the best brand you can afford; try to avoid any rods/reels made China. Made in Japan or Korea make up the vast majority available tody. Sometimes rod makers like Dobyn's, Powell and Phenix will have close outs on some excellent rods. Reels EBay may be your best chance for a good deal. For those of you who think Garcia is made in Sweden! , try made in China for the past 10 years! It's difficult to buy used rods, never know if it was damaged and shiping is costly. Reels can and should be serviced by a good technician at a reasonable price. Good luck. Tom Quote
NBR Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 Unless youcan find a well cared for used take a look at the BPS combos. They get panned a lot but I have one or more of almost every make and my BPS reels have served me as well as any. Quote
