MIbassin Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 How did all of you convince your parents to go fishing when you were younger? i remember i would just beg my dad until he couldn't take it and would cave and take me fishing down at out local lake. im interested in hearing all of your answers Quote
zachb34 Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 I have my own boat and everything so my parents just let me but when they don't I just say i'm depressed and need to get outside. Quote
Super User Sam Posted September 11, 2012 Super User Posted September 11, 2012 It depends. For bank fishing I could go any time I wanted to Audubon Park's lagoon and fish for bream and bass. Just ride my bike to the park and have fun. For boat fishing I had to go with my uncles and fish the Biloxi marsh, Lake Pontchartrain or the Mississippi Sound and various inland bayou's. When I grew up there were very few bass boats and we fished out of 16-foot skiffs. Today, with the "wierd" people around and the "do gooders" who hate fishing I would think a young man could encounter trouble if fishing alone so please go with a friend. As far as getting your dad to take you, please consider setting up a calendar of dates to go fishing and get his approval so you all know when you will be going and where. Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Me and my dad go fshing on our conoe and sometimes go surfcasting for stipers. But we go fishing everyweekend just about anyways. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted September 11, 2012 Super User Posted September 11, 2012 My mother had no problem with dad taking us fishing. She did have a problem with the guns though Quote
mikey5string Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I wouldnt have to convince my parents to let me go fishing when I was young. Im sure most parents would be happy their kids were fishing given the other activities kids might be into... How old are you? Cant you just ride your bike? Quote
MIbassin Posted September 12, 2012 Author Posted September 12, 2012 im 15..the problem is that we don't really have and lakes within biking distance...i was just curious about some creative ways you got to go fishing when you were young Quote
buzzfrog Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I have my own boat and everything so my parents just let me but when they don't I just say i'm depressed and need to get outside. Kids today, tsk tsk, with there own boats and stufff, lol lucky dog Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted September 12, 2012 Super User Posted September 12, 2012 I grew up in a small town in South Louisiana. I was the eldest of three hell-raising boys. My dad worked in the oil patch and worked ten days offshore and five days at home, so my Mom spent two-thirds of the time raising us by herself. Any time she could get rid of the three of us was time well spent for her. We boys were almost always outdoors. We were within a short bike-ride of several fishing spots, so fishing for catfish with a Zebco was the order of the day. As we grew older, hunting became a focus. Dad bought each of his boys a .22 single-shot rifle for their twelfth birthday, and a bolt action 20-gauge shot-gun for their fifteenth. I still have both of those weapons to this day. Oddly, I never started bass fishing until after I was married to my first wife. Her dad was an avid bass fisherman and beer drinker, and he invited me out with him on a number of occasions. I don't remember much about those fishing trips, except he always had me fish with a Lucky-13 lure (remember those?) I never caught a thing, but I drank enough beer not to care. Quote
wademaster1 Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 never had to beg; me and my brother were always outdoors with our friends and our dad; thats they way i will bring my kids up if i ever have any; hahah Quote
Jake P Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 Never had a dad to take me and my mom was busy taking care of my brother who has CP. My buddy and I tried teaching ourselves by throwing a rattle trap with a bobber lol. I honestly caught 3 fish our first time out that way in about 3 ft of water. My son is almost to the age where he asks to go. He will never hear no from me. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted September 12, 2012 Super User Posted September 12, 2012 I didn't have to beg. I was lucky enough to have a father who liked to fish. In fact, in my pre teen years I had to beg for him to let me stay home. He'd make me feel guilty so I ended up going anyway, haha. I remember dad getting home from work at midnite, waking me up and going snook fishing from the local bridges and a couple private docks. We would always stop for a Yoohoo and Honey Bun on the way. The worst part was waiting for the tide to change, I'd usually fall asleep on the dock and wake up next to a snook flopping around next to me, LMAO. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted September 12, 2012 Super User Posted September 12, 2012 I don't remember much about those fishing trips, except he always had me fish with a Lucky-13 lure (remember those?) . Geez, talking about bringing back memories. I think I may have one or two Lucky 13's somewhere in my old t-box up in the attic. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted September 12, 2012 Super User Posted September 12, 2012 My Dad grew up fishing and still loves to go. I never had to ask. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted September 12, 2012 Super User Posted September 12, 2012 When I was a kid the only time I could fish was when my dad was available evenings or Sundays. We lived near a private lake that had rowboats only. In order to get my mom to let me fish by myself down at the lake I had to prove I could swim well. I swam across the lake about half a mile accompanied by a buddy in a rowboat and my mom trusted my abilities after that. Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted September 13, 2012 Super User Posted September 13, 2012 I guess I always had SOME fishing nearby: chubs, dace, carp, sunfish, ... . When I was 11 or 12, there were some bass ponds that my parents let me bike to. They lay 11miles distant one way, but was worth it the effort. My Dad did fish, and started me out, but I took it from there. Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 i was the only one in my family that was really into fishing...so my mom would drop me off at the local neighborhood lake for few hours. It all took off from there! Quote
NBR Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 My dad didn't fish. I started at a local creek filled with mostly rough fish, a few blue gills and other sunnies and a rare bass. Cane pole bobber and some worms. My dad bought me a bait caster and shortly there after got him self one. We fished together often IL where we lived, IN, TN, Wi and MBN until his passing. Now I think we didn't go together often enough. Quote

He even bought my 'ole green and white Zebco 202 setup. I guess he figured if I was fishing, I was staying out of trouble, lol. Quote
BassfisherMass Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 i did not fish as a kid the hard part now is to get my wife to let me go Quote
Silas Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 When I was very young, my dad died. We were dirt poor! I would actually walk down the levee about 4 miles to some "borrow pits" or little ponds. The fish I brought home we ate. So my mom always liked me to fish.....it meant more food for the 3 kids. I started off fly fishing, then finally used a baitcaster after I saw an adult pull in 5 bass on a Sidewinder while thowing in the pond. Later, while in my teens, my uncle would drive us to a bayou where they rented bateaus and we would paddle about 5 miles fishing the bank catching bass, bream, catfish, sacalait....a mixed bag, and have a great fish fry when we got home. Those were glorious days....the days of "Wine and Roses." I didn't realize how poor we were. If you could just find a buddy, or better yet, a relative, an uncle, to take you with him a few times, that would be great! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 15, 2012 Global Moderator Posted September 15, 2012 Both my parents fish so I rarely had to try real hard. We were really poor so my grandparents watched my sister and I while my parents worked all day and they had a very good pond in their backyard so I could fish almost whenever I wanted. Bought my first boat when I was 13 with money from mowing yards and doing odd jobs so by the time I turned 16 and got my first old beater truck I was fishing 5-7 days a week almost year round. Quote
