I was at work while my wife was at home with our first child. She was watching it on the news and called me. Everyone at work stopped what they were doing and we watched the news online the rest of the day.

I was doing a residency at a family health clinic. Performing a consult on a lady who was debating about having a tooth extracted. First plane hit at the beginning of the consult. No TV, only a radio so we were kind of in the dark. Lady opted to not have anything done when the second plane hit and my girlfriend (now my wife) called to tell me to get to the gas station and get home ASAP. About 5 minutes later we were in a lock down cause someone called in a bomb threat.

I was on the second day of 2 weeks of Official Leave from the USCG

Stationed in Atlantic City, NJ as a Search & Rescue Controller, I watched about 10 minutes of it unfold on a TV at the Gym.

Needless to say, Leave was over - and we were busy.

That day changed the world forever.

I was sleeping between my 4:30 am baseball practice and my 11:00 am class. I remember my mom calling me up to tell me, and turning on the tv, only to end up seeing the second hit. I'll never forget seeing that. I can't even imagine being there when it happened.

My alarm clock went off, and I heard the announcer say, "I appears a plane may have struck one of the twin towers in NYC. We're not sure yet what kind of plane, but I image it is a small plane such as a Cessna. You will probably hear more about this later this morning as more information becomes available."

Understatement of the century.

I was in Cpl's course at Camp Geiger, when the first plane hit the instructors brought in a tv and we watched. The secured us at 1300 to go back to our units and it took me 5 and a half hours to drive from Camp Geiger to Camp Lejeune ( 10 miles ). Got back to the barracks and we were all packing up ready to go.

7th or 8th grade english class. The school I was going to was about 2 miles from the main gate at Quantico, so needless to say it was crazy.

My Dad helped evacuate people out of the pentagon. I lost friends at the pentagon. I know people who were in the pentagon when it was hit.

when my mom came to pick us up from school, we had to stop by walmart to get some medicine, my older brother said we need a flag, We bought the biggest flag they had. It now flies outside our house, on a regular basis

I think what still scares me the most, even after all this time, is the helplessness afterwards. Our department sent supplies, money, blood etc to help, but being in the middle of central Kansas at the time we couldnt do much.

AG Wright? I was in Garrisonville Elementary, which is connected to AG Wright. Crazy how small the world is. I was in 1st grade, and we were doing vocab when the assistant teacher came in and just said there was a plane crash. I found out when my mom came to pick me up about an hour later. I remember just about every channel was playing what was happening.

Yup, like 2 miles from the Quantico Gate. Everything was crazy.

I was in bed, in my Long Island, NY home, enjoying my last hour of sleep when I woke to my sister's voice on my answering machine screaming, "Get up, we're being attacked. Turn on the TV!"

I turned on the TV just to sit there in horror and confusion. My thoughts immediately went to those who I knew who were working in Manhattan as well as to who the heck did this and why. I drove to work that morning armed with a 30.06 and Mossberg 88, for I didn't know the extent of the attack as I walked out the door. The entire day I pretty much walked around like a zombie. I don't feel any less of a man by admitting I cried that day.

The ensuing days and weeks proved challenging as each day I would open up the local paper and read one familiar name after another. At least a dozen people I knew from all walks of life perished that day; poof gone, just like that.

Hanging drywall at a house in Darien. Heard it first on the radio, then the homeowner brought in a small TV and we were glued to that for the rest of the day.

I was at home watching on tv about a plane hitting one of the towers. Then I saw the second one hit live on tv. I immediately started calling family members. Then the reports started coming in about the pentagon and the crash in Pennsylvania.

I was asleep when it happened. Around 11:00 central I stumbled into my Comp 1 class. I never turned on the radio or the tv before I got to class. People were talking about it, but I really did not comprehend the magnitude of it. My Comp 1 professor popped his head into the class room and said class was canceled and that he was going to get a TV feed to the mini movie theater that was by our classroom. About that time I realized it must be a lot bigger deal than I was picturing in my head. I went into the theater and was just blown away by what I was seeing. I sat there with many many people in pretty much dead silence watching what was going on until late afternoon.

I had just said goodbye to one of my best friends and his family. They were moving to Fort Bragg for his next duty station. I turned on the TV and watch it from the very beginning of the reports. I held my wife for a long time and then called Fort Gordon to see where I needed to report. I put on my uniform, laced up my boots, grabbed my gear, and kissed my pregnant wife goodbye not knowing when I'd be back home.

I was headed to the office, caught the first plane hitting and figured it was a huge accident. When I got to work everyone was in a stupor. Had this sick feeling in my gut for a couple days.

6th grade english class. I remember the teachers wouldnt let us do anything accept sit on the floor until they knew more. Couldnt watch tv or anything. My mom came and picked me up not knowing what more wouldnt happen as time went on that day. I remember wondering if the entire country would be under attack. Last thing I remember was feeling speechless as I watched CNN for the next week with my mom. Then I remember wishing I was 18 so I could join the military and fight.

It is amazing to me how much it still gets and how real the feelings are when i watch the video of the 2nd plane hitting. It is so vivid and fresh in my mind like the day it happened.

I even watched "Loose change". It is the 9/11 conspiracy theory. Dont even get me started on that.

Thank you to all who serve currently and have in the past. You are stronger men than me. The thought of being away from my son and daughter for more than 2 days makes me sad. I think it would hurt me too much not to be able to kiss my baby girl good night and hear her say Night Night dada. Although if it came down to it I would defend my country no matter the sacrifice.

It was a small private school that was a 5 minute walk to the main gate, so I am talking CLOSE to the action.

Here is one more, when we finally made contact with my Dad, he gave my Mom a list of wives and loved ones to call. My Mom later said those were some of the hardest phone calls to make.
