airborne_angler Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 I recently had an auction end on Ebay, where I was selling a mixed lot of different soft plastic baits. In the auction,I mention that some of the baits arent in the original packaging, and arent mixed with any other brands or colors, but ARE in some ziploc bags. I get a guy who writes me this: Just a point of information. Watch out putting plastic worms and grubs in zip lock bags. Alot are not compatible and melt. Thanks Tim I respond and write him this: Do you mean the baits arent compatible with the ziploc bags,or arent compatible with each other? I havent mixed any of the baits with any other brand or color of other bait,so they should be ok. He writes this in response: Most of the worms have to be keep in special worm-proof baqs or boxes. Otherwize you get color bleed off or melting. Just information. So you mean to tell me all these tackle manufacturers have specially designed worm proof bags? I know of a particular person who sells baits and is known and well liked here on Bassresource.com(goes by the name Brent...You all know who im talking about) who packages his baits in Smaller ziploc style bags,I cant see anything special about those.I have never had a problem with his baits doing anything funky while in the packaging. I know some soft plastic baits will react with Crankbaits and such, but I have never heard of what this person is talking about occuring in normal Ziploc Bags. Anyone care to add anything? Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted February 16, 2010 Super User Posted February 16, 2010 The only thing I can think of is that he thinks you're mixing different brands/colors in the same bag. Some brands don't react well with others. And we all know that some colors of soft plastics do bleed onto others. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted February 16, 2010 Super User Posted February 16, 2010 The only thing you don't mix is elaztech and everything else because they melt. Colors can bleed but sometimes that makes a great color. Quote
Mattlures Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 The guy is correct. Just because you cant tell the difference in the bags doesnt mean they are made from the same material. Worm prook bags are a poly material. I dont think regular zip lock bags are. Now this doesnt mean your bags wont work. They will work they just will deteriorate over time. Most likely you wont have any issues. And even if you noticed the bags going bad you could just put them in new bags. Quote
Super User Catt Posted February 16, 2010 Super User Posted February 16, 2010 For years I have put all my plastics in Ziploc® baggies & then roll them up...takes up less room. The only problem I've noticed is not with the platics but with the bag itself, they will eventually tear even when not opened. Quote

I've had some ziplocs just completely fall apart when I picked them up. Didn't do any damage to the baits though. Also for some reason I've never had it happen yet with bags labeled as "feezer" bags. :-? Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 x3. I've kept every single type of worm I own (except gulp and elaztech) in ziplock freezer bags. Quote
D4u2s0t Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 I keep plastics in ziploc bags, and have never had a problem. But, I don't mix baits, and don't mix colors. Like mentioned, if you mix colors, good chance you'll have some funky looking baits! Quote
NBR Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 I've had plastic baits in ZipLoc bag for years with no problems. I do keep colors seperate and I don't put the long stretch material isolated. Quote
airborne_angler Posted February 16, 2010 Author Posted February 16, 2010 Ya know its responses like everyone is giving that make me realize I havent done a bit wrong by putting the baits in Ziploc bags. Ive done for years and ive seen it done for years. If most tackle manufacturers had "worm proof" bags and such, that could potentially drive the prices of each package of bait. I dont see anything special about the bags most tackle makers package thier stuff in. I have seen the lamination (which contains the marketing info, brand name and such) come off,but the bags were themselves were fine.Ive also seen the ziploc portion of bags come off from the original packaging, Other than that, never a problem. Big-O Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Tha majority of all soft plastics can be stored in standard ziplocks for an extended length of time. As mentioned above, avoid mixing colors as some soft plastics are not color fast and will bleed over. The thicker freezer zip lock bags seem to work best and over longer periods of time but original manufacturer bags will provide even more longevity. Also Elaztech material is a totally different compound than the standard polysol used by the majority. Keeping these separate is absolutely essential. Since all soft plastic compounds are made from some sort of a petroleum base, as are plastic ziplock bags, they will react to each other normally resulting in the bag deteriorating over an extended length of time. Many soft plastics will get more oily over time inside a plastic bag. This process is expedited with hot temps as the plastic is separating and breaking down to it's normal liquid state. There are new formulas that some of us use that are designed to maintain their original consistancy for longer periods of time and with less oil residue. The manufacturers bags are normally produced from a different material than are standard ziplocks. This material is normally referred to as PET plastic which is extremely resistant to reaction with Polysols. This product as well as APET compounds are much more expensive than standard Ziplocks but absolutely required to avoid problems on the store shelves and in your tackle box. Hope this helped to give a few details but all of the info posted by others is true as well. Big O www.ragetail.com Quote
