BASSHUNTER1961 Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 I don't hear much about fishing with ultralight gear, and wonder how many fish it on a regular basis? I have not fished UL in many years, but started this past weekend and now remember how much fun it can be. It all started this past weekend when my son and I passed a yard sale and noted some fishing rods. We turned around and walked up and there was a brand new St Croix Premier 6' ultralight rod with a Abu Garcia Cardinal 101 reel attached spooled up with braid. I walked out with the combo for $10.00.... I've been fishing it every day since Sat and I'm having a ton of fun catching these little guys. Who else uses this type of gear and lets see some of your catches. Uploaded with ImageShack.us Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 11, 2012 Global Moderator Posted September 11, 2012 Man you stole that combo! I've got a little 6' Avid with a Sahara 750 spooled with 3.1lb DAM techtan line that I usually fish with at least a little bit each week. It's a blast to catch fish with but it's almost too light to set the hook on anything bigger. I did manage to catch this 9lb 12oz flathead on it fishing a stream with one of my homemade trout jigs. That's way more fish than I really ever want to fight on that rod again. I doubt I would have landed it if the stream was any wider or if it had any cover in it other than rocks. Quote
fishking247 Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 a very old pic of me with a big winter brown trout caught on a 4'6" daiwa UL with a shimano sedona 750 with 3lb trilene xl Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted September 11, 2012 Super User Posted September 11, 2012 Congrats on the find. Don't know if I could have walked out without giving them a little extra money. What a deal!!!! No pictures, but when I quit fishing years ago, 4 lb. Trilene was about all I ever used. Caught a 10 lb. carp with it and a 9' Fenwick rod designed for live nightwalkers. Lots of fun. Before that 8 lb. Tilene was my standard line. Caught a nice 20 catfish and 35 lb. carp on it. Even more fun. My current panfish set-up isn't really ultralight....10 lb. Sufix 832 on a Fenwick River Runner rated 1/32-5/16 oz. and 4-8 lb. line Figured with the way my eyes are that 10 lb. braid was as thin as I wanted to try threading a hook with. Quote

fishking247 Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Nice, but where is your head? That is why you never let an old timer who still uses an old glass rod with a mitchell reel operate a digital camera lol Quote

That's one heck of a fish to land on UL gear, congrats... Congrats on the find. Don't know if I could have walked out without giving them a little extra money. What a deal!!!! Well, the rod wasn't hers.... It had belonged to her ex who she had throw out 6 months ago, and she was selling off all his stuff LOL. We actually walked out with the rod/reel combo, a 47# thrust Motor Guide trolling motor, a 27# thrust Minn Kota trolling motor, a Pignose guitar amp and two Fender Strats all for $50.00 She said she has a nice canoe out back, and we are going to look at it tomorrow. A guy had got there just before us and was loading 3 HUGE tackle boxes FULL of tackle for $5.00 each, but he missed the rod. That's cause we're out using it instead of talking about it! It's good to know people do use this type of gear. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted September 11, 2012 Super User Posted September 11, 2012 It's good to know people do use this type of gear. I forgot to mention, $10 for that was a hell of a deal! Between the wife and I we have 4 UL combos, my main is a 7' Avid ULM, hers is the Avid 6' ULF Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted September 12, 2012 Super User Posted September 12, 2012 I have an old Mitchell 308 on a 6' med rod. Mainly use it for crappie and bluegill. Starting this year though, I think I will try my hand with trout. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted September 12, 2012 Super User Posted September 12, 2012 I still got my old Shimano Spirex 500 from '94 that I still use to this day on a Berkley Cherrywood and 6# flouro. Catch fish all day long with a Wordens Rooster Tail. Quote
georgeyew Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I was using a 4'8 Daiwa UL rod and 4 lb line this morning to catch some bluegills. And unexpectedly 2 catfish snagged the hook and ran off. The first one was about 9 lbs and the second one about 6 lbs. It took a while to bring them in. I was so afraid of snapping the line, so I had the drag really loose. The fish almost ran out my line several times. It's a lot of fun, but I don't like the constant fear of knowing that the line may snap....it's too much pressure for me. Quote
Curved Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 Heck of a deal for $10. I've loved ultralight tackle since I started using it. On my setup I have 6lb line on a 6'6" Quantum xtralite. I use it mostly for crappie and other panfish, but I've caught plenty of 2+ lb bass on it. Its a lot of fun to play the bigger fish while bringing them in. With the drag properly set and you can and land some large fish on UL tackle. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted September 12, 2012 Super User Posted September 12, 2012 Great buy! I have 3 UL rigs, one of which I have with me every time out. My favorite is a B n' M 7' Sam's Supersensitive rod. I have it matched with a Symetre 750 (no longer made) filled with 2# test Trilene XL mono. Have caught a lot of crappie and 'gills with that rig. And some decent bass as well. Quote
gallowaypt Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I love fishing with UL. Mine is a 5' ultralight ugly with 6 lb mono, and I pulled in a 4 lb LM with it already this summer! Quote
thehooligan Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 My ultralight combo is a 5ft st croix triumph with shimano sedona 500 with 4lb sufix elite. My light combo is a 6ft st croix premier with daiwa fuego 100 with 4lb sufix elite. My best is a 2.5lb bass on the ultralight setup, was a great fight !! Quote
Curved Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 I was at the tackle shop next to my home lake today and they told me the story of the most recent pike citation. While fishing for crappie, someone landed a 10 lb pike on ultralight tackle and 4 lb line! There's even pictures to prove it. A small miracle must have taken place to keep the line from being cut on the pike's teeth. Quote
Super User deep Posted September 17, 2012 Super User Posted September 17, 2012 I have a Cabela's house brand 6" UL rod, paired with a cheap spinning reel, spooled with 2/10 power pro. I think I fished it 3 or 4 times this season. It is a lot of fun though catching "anything" on this setup. Quote
