fuzzman Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 Yesterday i went out on the Erie canal and got a hit, so i start reeling in and my line snaps but then i thought about it and it was only 8 lb pound test line so i went out to the store and bought 14 pound test line. Went out today and hooked another fish with the 14 pound line started reeling in and i think my line snapped but im not sure. Why does this keep happening to me? i lost the 2 best spinnerbaits i had and now i have none. But could it be that i need to adjust my drag on my baitcaster? Please help would be greatly apperciated Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted September 10, 2012 Super User Posted September 10, 2012 im not trying to insult you but how long have you been fishing? only reason i ask is because im new to this and the first few times i went out i had the same problem. it turned out that i wasn't tying my knots properly. i thought it was the line snapping but it was really the knot coming undone. check the end of the line next time. if its all curly and twisted, it was most likely the knot. nashua fisherman Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 also check for a chipped guide on your rod. seen it happen before. Quote
KAAATHLEEN Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Is the line old? been sitting on a shelf for 5 years at the store before you bought it? Big fish !!!!!! Fish with teeth cutting the line? What type of line? Sharp guide or spot on the reel, or depending on the line you are using could be the knot slipping thru or if you tie fast knots with monofilant line you could be weakening the line at the knot. With mono line tie your knots slowly to keep friction and heat to a minimum. the heat and friction weakens the line. We find with braided line the knots will slip thru a little at a time especially if you are not using the correct knot. We always retie knots every hour or so especially with top water and fishing weedy or rocky areas. Even weeds will damage line a little bit at a time. Some will say that it is a waste of time and not needed, but it is my time and this is what i do. This is a fantastic site for helping to learn the correct or what the experts say is the best and correct knot for different types of line and doing different things. http://www.netknots.com/fishing_knots/ If you read thru Bass Resource i am sure there is a place to learn these knots also 1 Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Chipped guide or knots are the probably the problem, chipped guide has been a problem for me aswell. Quote
Dylcook91 Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 I don't know whats in the waters your fishing, but where I fish there are pickerel. Those nasty little fish take my lures all the time(spinners, top waters) The second they hit it they snap the line like they were never even there. Are there any fish with teeth where your fishing? Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted September 11, 2012 Super User Posted September 11, 2012 if you worried about friction when tying your knots, wet the knot before pulling it tight. Quote
Gilbert Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Try using braided line. I use a palomar knot, and with the new line I just tried i hardly have my line snap. I use Seaguar Kanzen braided 20lb line. It's smooth and reliable. Quote
Nashua Nev Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 D = All of the above are possible Quote
