KYbass1276 Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 I picked up a few packs of them today. Look to be good hooks, price is definatly good for the amount of hooks. I picked up some of their flourocarbon line too I hope it meets my expectations Quote
bflow_6 Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 i use there floro line and like it a lot had never failed me yet Quote
Stasher1 Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 I've been using their hooks for the past couple years now with no complaints. The price is pretty hard to beat and the Atlanta BPS is about 15 miles from my house, so I don't have to pay shipping. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 13, 2010 Super User Posted February 13, 2010 No. BPS hooks are made from low quality wire and break easily; are not particularly sharp and do not hold a point; are inconsistent due to a lack of quality control and more generally, an inferior hook. :-X p.s. Fishing gear is on sale all the time, save money on something else. "Expensive" hooks don't account for much in the scheme of things. Gamakatsu, Owner, XPoint, Mustad and VMC are all great hooks. Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted February 13, 2010 Super User Posted February 13, 2010 Thats about as good as an answer gets. I've used their wide gaps once. I never will again. The straight shank worm hooks I don't mind, they're a little larger gauge wire. But I'd much rather pay the extra couple of bucks for a quality hook like Owner or Gamakatsu. You never know when you're going to lay into a great fish. You'll be screaming at yourself when you break a hook. Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted February 14, 2010 Super User Posted February 14, 2010 I would stay away from them hooks! But for the line the BPS fluo. line is, great line! Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 Road Warrior is right on this one. BPS hooks will bend fairly easy. The configration of the wide gap isn't bad, they just are a low grade hook. Use them up fun fishing though. You will appreciate a better quality hook as mentioned. Lots of opinions on that topic. bobbyc Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 Not talking from experience here, although a friend, an excellent fisherman, has sworn off BPS hooks. Gammy's have never let me down. Quote
Sherlock 60 Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 I have a 25 pack of 3/0 EWG BPS hooks I bought about 5 years ago. Still have about 22 of them. I keep them only as back-ups in case I run out of Gamakatsu hooks. They are obviously not the same quality as the Gammy hooks. Quote
knap Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 i use the hooks all the time, and have never had a problem with them, they are cheap and you get alot of hooks for a great price Quote
KYbass1276 Posted February 14, 2010 Author Posted February 14, 2010 Well I normally use gammys and was on a mission to stock up on terminal tackle for this year. I only bought four packs of them 2 and 3 ewg and some drop shot hooks. I was just looking for a cheaper alternative to the gammy's but after further inspection and looking at them I can see where they are more opt to bend considering I bent them a little by hand. Live and learn I guess should have just stuck to what was working Quote

I picked up some of their flourocarbon line too I hope it meets my expectations Like most BPS products, they are not quality hooks. Spend a little extra for Owners. Quote
Eternal Angler Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 Never used their hooks. Just about any kind of aftermarket hook is strong and sharper than the stock hooks on lures. I've heard good things about their fluorocarbon. Doesn't Van Damme swear by the stuff? Quote

That's not universally true at all. Higher end lures come with hooks that cannot be improved upon. Examples would be both Rapals X-Raps and Lucky Craft VMC hooks. Many single hook lures use Mustad, Gamakatsu or Owner brands. 8-) Quote
wisconsin heat Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 yes, and to further what roadwarrior said, in my opinion even the "crappy" stock hooks are somewhat sharp when i get them, i always use a crankbait once or twice before exchanging the treble hooks to get a little more for my money. I've heard good things about their fluorocarbon. Doesn't Van Damme swear by the stuff? Van Dam is sponsored by Bass Pro Shops, so he doesn't have a choice other than to use it. Just because a pro fishes a product doesn't mean it's good (or bad). Quote
jj2 Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 I use the xps o'shaughnessy hooks for worming and the magna ewg which is a heavier guage wire for picthing tubes and creature baits they are supposed the be made from high carbon steel never had any problems with them they seem as sharp as any and have never bent one Quote
1 oar Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Ive been using them for years without any problems. Quote
Boogey Man Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I've used their XPS EWG for several years. I've never had one bend, the biggest bass I've caught on one was about 5lbs. And as far as the sharpness, I think we've all missed fished on a soft plastic bait, so was it because of the BPS hook? I don't have a problem with them but to each his own. Quote
Georgia Jeff Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I have used both BPS superline hooks and Gamakatsu Superline hooks for several years now. The gammys are sharper and don't quite bend as much. However, the BPS hooks are pretty decent and have never let me down. I fish them on Power Pro braid so bending is more of a problem than sharpness. You could hook a fish with a dull hook if you are fishing braid. If they were the same price I would definately go with the Gamakatsus, but if you need to save some money the BPS hooks are fine. Most people don't fish for money and don't fish locations were 10 plus pound fish are common. I have caught fish up to 8 pounds on the BPS hooks with no problems. Hope this helps. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted February 15, 2010 Super User Posted February 15, 2010 I have some of the EWG hooks that I bought three or four years ago. I have had no problems. My Dad on the other hand bought some last year and he has had several break in two while removing them from a fish. Quote
jeosbo01 Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I use the trebles sometimes and have yet to have a problem with them. They really don't stick out as overly good or bad to me. On a side note, I have peeled the label off of several bags of them and found VMC logos on the package underneath...not sure why it was there but it was... Quote
SBM-RL Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 My brother uses them and hasn't had any issues but when it comes to fishing i want every advantage i can afford so use gamakatsu hooks i have full confidence in them. Quote
Big Jim Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Listen to Georgia Jeff. If you fish tournements, get some high dollar hooks for them. Many people try to buy an extra fish with their gear when they are missing alot more due to a lack of that learned stuff. BPS hooks are fine. Change them a little more often. Quote
