Arv Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 I currently have a 7.1 Citica spooled with 50lb braid. I fish some weeds/slop but nothing super thick. I want the ability to throw a frog but want a set up that will be able to throw jigs and soft plastics as well (which is what I will throw more often). Is 50lb braid too much? Or should I lighten up the line? Thanks in advance. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 4, 2012 Super User Posted September 4, 2012 50 lb is fine Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Set your drag accordingly but no issues with the line. Quote
Aluma-Bass Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 I like 50lb, i use to use a lot of 30lb but it was so thin and kinda dug into the spool more than the 50lbs does. I really like the powerpro slick. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted September 4, 2012 Super User Posted September 4, 2012 #40-#50 is great all around. Quote
Chris Wilson Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 I use 30 on my chronarch and 50 on my old accurist pt and my my revo sx, all green power pro. Quote
Arv Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep the 50# Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted September 5, 2012 Super User Posted September 5, 2012 For me it's overkill, big rods, hvy line, winching fish isn't sporting enough for me, not even in the realm of consideration, 15# braid max. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 5, 2012 Super User Posted September 5, 2012 The issue with small diameter lines is that it digs into the spool on baitcasters. This is not an issue with spinning line. The key is manageability, not strength. Quote

How do I accurately set the drag so I don't rip the lures out every time? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 5, 2012 Super User Posted September 5, 2012 Measure your drag with a scale or a known weight. If you use a weight, let's try a 3 lb dumbell in a plastic grocery bag. Tie the bag to your line and SLOWLY lift it off the ground. That's about as much as you will want, depending on the rod. Adjust the drag so that it just begins to release as you lift the bag off the floor. Quote

Sorry for all the questions. I'm not that familiar with braided line. Are there any good resources I can read/watch? Quote

I'm not that familiar with braided line. Are there any good resources I can read/watch? Set the drag for a 1/3 of the rated pounds for mono or flouro. When using braid, I go by the diameter of mono it's equal to and set it to a 1/3 of that Example: 30# braid is the equivalent diameter of 8# mono so I set my drag for 8#.... This how I do it, not how everyone does it. Quote
Arv Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 Cool, thanks basshunter. Just posted in the "no more spending" topic. Just found something else I need to buy haha. Quote
Super User deep Posted September 6, 2012 Super User Posted September 6, 2012 50 lb should serve you well. I'd look at the diameter, not the lb test. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted September 6, 2012 Super User Posted September 6, 2012 I like to throw into weeds and brush. I would rather have too heavy of a line than not heavy enough. Quote
