Reel Problem

Guys, DVT or RM,

I've got an abu garcia 6500C3 that has a problem I haven't figured out yet. When I spin the reel handle and then stop it quickly, the spool continues to rotate for a couple of seconds and makes like a gear clicking noise. Any ideas what this might be? I thought maybe it was the pinion gear but I had an extra and switched it out but that didn't fix the issue. It almost seems like the sound is coming from the non handle side of the reel. Any help would be appreciated. Oh and the sound happens with the line out clicker off too.

I can tell you that on my shimanos it's done the same thing before. i couldnt figure it out for the life of me. I finally figured that the spool was sliding to far to the palm side because the little fiber spacer that goes behind the palm side spool bearing was missing. I guess it fell out when cleaning and I never noticed it. I have since replaced it on the reels that were missing it and I haven't had the problem since.

the sound that you're hearing is the little perpendicular T on the spool shaft not seating all the way into the pinion recesses.

when you stop the handle the spool keeps turning because that "T" is not seating in the recesses all the way allowing the spool to keep turning

What would cause it not to seat properly? Does it just need to be disassembled and put back together?

Check the pinion gear. The engagement slots (area were the spool shaft engagment pin engages the pinion gear) must have rounded out, and, the pinion yoke springs could have weakened,. There is a fix (very carefully use a micro file to sharpen the edges of the slots), or if not that mechanically inclined, send it in for a yoke spring,and pinion repair or replacement...

Hey RM and DVT, I replaced the pinion gear but still have the same issue. I looked on the schematic and don't see any pinion yoke springs. Am I missing something? I may have to send it to one of you guys

The springs might be considered part of the side plate assembly. I believe the plate attaches by screwing onto the yoke posts. If you have the reel apart you should see a pair of coil springs about 1/2 inch long that press down on the yoke. If there is no tension on there the pinion will slip.

Actually, the C3 has a pair of "strip" springs in place of the coil springs prevalent in newer bait caster designs. The part is #22808 on the schematic below; I have no idea if this is the right model, but that part should be the same regardless of model.

You might try bending the springs toward the spool to give them more springiness, but don't take it too far.

I agree the fingers must have the proper pressure for the yoke to help engage the pinion with the engagement ring on the spool over the bearing..

We have found that if you have the cast control cap overly adjusted (tight ) that it pushes the spool to the left helping cause the issue (the engagement ring disengages the pinion).

again the pinion gear engagement slots are probably worn, (you might try turning that engagement ring over)....

check the plastc positioner that has the flat metal tension pieces that sets ontop of pinion yoke, the release arm , or the round peace that that the brake blocks are attached to. Sounds like when you turn the handle to engage something is not letting the pinion go into place. check these 3 parts.
