Okay, everyone now a days is using the baitcasting and big pole like a winch with 40lb braid, but lets be real men now and try Ultralight with 4lb mono. I caught a 16inch 2.5lber the other day on this tackle with a topowater, and it was a great fight! anyone every try ultralight fishing? Favorite line? and lures? or just cool stories!

Pfft, ultra light? Real men bass fish the heaviest cover with ice fishing rods. 4# test is for wimps. 2# is where it's at.

On a serious note, I spool my regular spinning rod with 6# mono, so it's pretty light I think.

I fish 8lb mono or 15lb braid strictly on spinning tackle 80% of the time.

i fish my 6'8" light/fast spinning outfit almost exclusively. ive caught plenty of largemouth, peacock and panfish on it. love it!

When things get slow for bass in the summer, I sometimes get out the UL rod and go for panfish. Every once and a while, a bass will come along as well. The only file photo I have is of a nice 17" / 2.44lb LMB. The rod is a 25+ year old 5' Shimano with a line rating of 1-4lb test - a real wet noodle rod. The reel is a newer Pflueger President - 20 size. Line is good 'ole Stren 4lb mono. The bait was a Strike King Bitsy Pond Minnow - a nifty little crankbait. I'm always surprised when those little #14 trebles stay hooked up in a larger fish...

Funny thing is I actually fish Trick worms and small senkos t-rigged on lighter wire hooks with my UL and 10 lb braid. Great fun and some good fish.

I was throwing 8lb Trilene XL on a 5' Ugly Stick Lite (ultra light) using an Abu Garcia underspin reel and a tiny 1/16 oz jig head with a 1.5" minnow tied on.

Hooked a 24" Pickerel, fought it for a short few, got it to the dock, reached down got my hand under the belly just as it snapped the line on a tooth. Yeah, 8lb isn't UL, but the rest of the outfit was. The Abu reel came with 8lb on it, not exactly ultra light, but the drag on the reel is horrendous. Might as well not have it, LOL.

But the best UL fishing are the guys who catch sailfish on 2lb test. That's gotta be fun.

i use an ultra light st croix with a stradic ci4. hooked onto a carp in my kayak, got towed around for 10 minutes, nearly de spooled twice then i lost it

I will throw topwater and beetlespins on 6# mono with an ultralight rod. Lots of fun. Use 10# mono for dropshot and Slider 4 inch worms.

5'6" ultra light rod / cheap abu cardinal from walmart + 4lb stren original + assorted topwaters = a good evening on the river

HAHAHA. That's funny. In clearwater... I will throw 4lb. or 6 lb. cortland camo on a medium light spinning setup... either dropshotting or split shot rigging Yamamoto senkos/roboworms, and recently.

Only when I really need to down-size my gear. I don't prefer catching bass on my crappie gear though. I only do it occasionally because my budget has not allowed to get a few Medium set-ups for finesse fishing so I have to go from MH to UL

It might just be me, but I don't really like to play fish anymore than I need to because I find it a bit unsporting. I wouldn't deer hunt with a .22 or turkey hunt with a .410.

Edit: Not saying theres anything particularly wrong with it, I just prefer not to. That said, it is fun to land a big fish on a UL set-up. The fish in my profile picture came on a Quantum Kinetic KT10PTiC / Shimano Voltaeus VTS56UL 5'6" UL MF / 4# Sufix Siege Mono.

I use an old Mitchell 308 on a 6' med. action rod, occasionally. I hate fishing in cover with light tackle.

Ive brought some nice bass in on 4lb line with an ultralight rod. But 99% percent of my fishing is 10-15lb braid for topwater, and 6-8lb mono/flouro for dropshot and senkos.

I love fishing with UL gear. I often use it with Fireline braid to fish wacky for LMB. I know, the Fireline isn't UL, but I use it for some local office tournaments, and would hate to lose a winner when 4# line snaps if I don't play it right.

ML/XF rod, 4-6 lb. fluoro, #1 size hooks is standard fare for big smallies up here. Not quite "ultra light," but close enough.
