Super User Alpster Posted September 4, 2012 Super User Posted September 4, 2012 I have both and although they have always been overpriced, I still like the Loomis rods better overall. As Roadwarrior said, St. Croix is a a "better value" but Loomis has them beat if money is not a constraint. JMHO Go glass for cranking and go "Lamiglas" for glass rods. Ronnie Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted September 4, 2012 Super User Posted September 4, 2012 For moving baits, the absolute most sensitive rod is not that important. Make sure it fits the lure/line rating you wish to throw. For bottom contact rods, get the best you can afford! Jeff He was specifically asking about the upper end not the avid. You are right you dont need top end for moving baits but he asked what i recommend and im just not a fan of the avid but it is still a good rod. Quote
central.PA.bass Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 All I can vouch for with St. Croix is a 7' M action Avid that I use for dropshotting. I would compare it equally to my Powell Max rods. Very sensitive. I just purchased a 6' L action Loomis IMX so hopefully it performs equally and I will be happy! Quote
Stingray23 Posted September 4, 2012 Author Posted September 4, 2012 Any other brand out there that has comparable characteristics to St Croix and Loomis, but cheaper? Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted September 4, 2012 Super User Posted September 4, 2012 Powell has a strong following. Abu garcia veritas does as well. How cheap are you looking to go? Quote
Stingray23 Posted September 4, 2012 Author Posted September 4, 2012 It was more out of curiosity. I know a lot of brands sell for more due to name recognition. I was just wondering if there is a rod out there with equally good components for less? Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted September 4, 2012 Super User Posted September 4, 2012 Powell has a strong following. Abu garcia veritas does as well. How cheap are you looking to go? The Abu Veritas compared to St Croix or Loomis as having top components is a joke. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted September 4, 2012 Super User Posted September 4, 2012 The Abu Veritas compared to St Croix or Loomis as having top components is a joke. i wouldn't know. i don't use them. i only said they have a strong following. Quote
DaveT63 Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 I have a St Croix Extreme 7' MF with a Daiwa PX68L, and a Loomis MBR842 GLX with a Steez 103HLA on it. I had the 842/Steez first, and LOVE it, but find myself reaching for the Extreme/Pixy much more often. I think those rods are about as comparable as you will find in the 2 lines. The Extreme just seems like a much nicer rod all around to me. And at the prices they have in the Bargain room now at 30%, they are a much better value than the GLX or NRX if they have what you want. Capt.Bob Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Any other brand out there that has comparable characteristics to St Croix and Loomis, but cheaper? Powell has a strong following. Abu garcia veritas does as well. How cheap are you looking to go? The question involved the word "comparable characteristics", and cheaper, the only thing those rods have to do with the question is CHEAPER, Not even close as comparable! Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted September 5, 2012 Super User Posted September 5, 2012 I have quite a few Loomis (IMX, GLX, NRX x4) and St Croix rods (Mojo, LTB x4, Legend Elite), and I give a slight edge to Loomis. However, you're definitely not going to lose whichever way you go and those bargain bin prices are unbelievable sometimes. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted September 12, 2012 Super User Posted September 12, 2012 The answer is Powell... Wrong answer, or wrong question. Splain Lucy! Hootie Quote
Lunker7 Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Both are very nice rods, and just like iabass8 said, you are only going to get biased answers. I personally prefer St. Croix for the value, but that's just me. Quote
Osteichthyes Bassturd Posted February 7, 2021 Posted February 7, 2021 I have spent a few days reading these comments on St. Croix Vs. G Loomis and the answer is simple. It's the one you are using. Same as Golf clubs in the back of the ruck being a bad place for them. 8 year old thread I found on Feb 7th 2021 looking for a cost effective DSR. As my theme and way to think is from a Kayak. So I tend to fish shorter and tighter in close quarters than most gents here. Ergo, my technique is not only adapted for feel and comfort, it's also a risk reward when you can break rods 2 or 3:1 in a kayak vs a Bass Boat. ? Just thinking out loud in a Covid-19 world Quote
Deephaven Posted February 7, 2021 Posted February 7, 2021 I own both. Confused at why comparing brands is even relative. For me it is always the blank. Both make some great rods and both make some duds. Both also make factory rods that are setup for the gaussian distribution of who they think buys them. Due to this I have mine custom made for me for how I will use them. Since Loomis is no longer diy builder friendly it would take some really special blank from them to be in consideration. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted February 7, 2021 Super User Posted February 7, 2021 I don't think you can go wrong with either. St. Croix rods are generally a better value and they make better rods at the lower end of the price spectrum, G Loomis wins at the upper end. Quote
