Shakes Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 Bought a LC Sammy last fall... heard a few different ways to fish it then. One that I distinctly remember is the Sammy is best on slick as glass water.. true? How fast do you guys fish yours? When is a Sammy the lure to turn to? The pattern on my Sammy is Aurora Black (actually looks blue with a little black on the back.) The point is, I've never even had a fish try and bite the Sammy. I fished it for about 2 weeks straight, and I'm thinkin of bringin it back out. Whats the word? Quote
Fishin Phil Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 It might be a little cold in mid-missouri this time of year for a top water bite. Wait for it to warm up a bit before getting anymore frustrated. When you do get that thing going, cast, let it sit a while then give three little tugs and reel in the slack. Repeat until you've walked it all the way back to the boat (and I mean all the way. I've had plenty of fish hit at the boat!). It should bob in a left right left motion. It's called walking the dog. Vary the cadence and speed untill you find what the fish are looking for. Generally speaking the more aggresive the bite, the quicker the retrieve. When the bite is real hot, you can really rip it back. Whatever you do, don't give up! Topwater fishing is ridiculously fun and real exciting. Good luck. Quote
WhiteMike1018 Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 What you stated is true. The LC Sammys really do shine on "glass water" because if causes a lot of vibration and noise that bass can zone in on. Heres my guideline for fishing a sammy: 1.) Put some scent on your sammy (dont know if this works but it cant hurt) 2.)Throw your sammy out to desired location 3.) Let it sit as long as you can so the wake of sammy is no longer present 4) Give 3-4 sudden jerks of the rod tip to get the desired action than stop. 5) Look closely for swirls near your sammy to see if bass are present 6) start a retrieve with 3-4 twiches of the rod tip, let it sit than maybe 2 twiches, than 4-5... Fish your sammy with alternating retrieves, and find what the bass want Good Luck -WM Quote
Super User T-rig Posted March 12, 2007 Super User Posted March 12, 2007 Why would you put scent on a Sammy? With the Sammy you only get reaction bites! Quote
MarVaBC Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Definitley don't give up on it...it was like my #1 fish catcher last year. First off, what size do you have? The 100 "walks" the best for me. You need to wait till they warm up and want to bite topwaters first....once they do, you should be getting hit non-stop on it. I throw it out as far as I can and immediately start walking it back. Depending on your position, your rod tip will vary. If i'm on land or in kayak, my rod tip is up...if i'm in a boat its down. Just experiment to see which way you can get it to walk the best....also I use a spinning rod which is a little un-orthodox for this method...I just like twitching w./ my right hand and reeling lefty. Walk it back at a medium pace....you should get "blowed up" soon after! It takes some practice but you should get confidence with it....if not i'll give you my shipping address and you can send it my way!!! Good luck Quote
