No. The amount of people getting sick is small and then those that actually die is even smaller.

You're more likely to die driving to and from the lake than you are getting west nile.

no. i've actually researched it and most people actually contract the virus but their immune system is strong enough to fight if off

Yes I will stop fishing if I get the West Nile virus. I will not stop fishing for fear of getting it. I am more likely to get killed in an accident on the way to the lake than contract the virus. Some things just are not worth worrying about.

Glenn hit it on the head. Bird flu, swine flu, west nile. If we ran and cowered at every possible virus or sickness out there we would never catch a fish. Much to do about nothing is well said.

Interesting. I've never been bitten by a mosquito while on the water, even close to shore. I suspect it might be a problem for bank fishermen however.

I'll hazard a guess as to why mosquitos don't bother me on the water. They "feed" on warm blooded animals, and are attracted to body heat. I don't think they naturally find much to draw blood from on the water so they remain "ashore" where there are birds, dogs, humans and other warm blooded critters. While you will find flocks of geese, ducks and other birds on the water, I don't know if a mosquito's suction tube can penetrate the layers of feathers.

If your scared of mosquitoes you might as well fish without a hook, dont want to risk hooking yourself. In fact, i'd be willing to bet hooking yourself is more common than getting west nile.

The reason I ask, is because I fish a shallow (2-4 feet) run off pond thats a block from my house in the woods, where mosquitos have been known to swarm the houses by the pponds when the water level gets low. West Nile is all over the news here in MD.

No way I would stop fishing because of West Nile. West Nile is getting a lot of coverage on the news but in reality, the vast majority of people who get seriously ill from it are either elderly or have compromised immune systems. Most younger/healthier people who get it either wind up with very mild symptoms or in a lot of cases they show no symptoms at all and don't even know they had it.

To put it in perspective for you, Maryland has 12 reported cases and only 1 person actually died from it. That's 12 people out of 6,000,000 or .000002 percent of the population. Stop worrying and go fishing.
