FishinChris Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 I am mainly an Abu Garcia guy, but I am interested in other suggestions other than the Revo Winch reel. I just purchased the medium action winch series rod and need a reel for it. In the end I probably will get the winch reel since they are on clearance or maybe even wait for the new model, but please -- lets here some other suggestions. Thanks in advance, FishinChris Quote
riskkid 2 Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 BPS Pro Qualifier has an option for a 4.7 : 1 gear ratio which is a bit lower than some other manufacturers Quote
papajoe222 Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 You're going to get a lot of opinions on this one, but I would base your final decision on the way you plan to use the combo , or at the very least on the type of cranking you do most often. If the majority of your cranking will be done with baits targeting 15ft. or less, I'd suggest a quality 6.3:1 baitcaster like a Curado or maybe TD Advantage. You'll want something that can stand up to the beating cranks give you and your equipment. If you plan on targeting deep water, you may want to consider something with a lower gear ratio as it will be easier on you over the course of a day's fishing. Besides, I've found that the deeper you crank, the slower you should be retrieving the bait once it reaches max. depth. I'm a Daiwa man, but I wouldn't recommend their Exceller 4.9:1 to anyone serious about deep cranking. Spend a little more on a Shimano or Abu, or go with a round baitcaster with a lower gear ratio. If you like to tinker, you can pick up a quality reel like a Curado and switch out the gears when you plan on deep cranking then switch them back for a later trip. Quote
mikeeasttn Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 Curado 200 E5 or Daiwa Zillion Crazy Cranker. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted August 30, 2012 Super User Posted August 30, 2012 For a low profile cranking reel - Quantum Tour KVD TKVD150PPT 5.3:1 - I have 2 and really like everything about them. For a round cranking reel - Shimano Callcutta 200D - Demoed one for a week - really sweet reel. http://www.tackletou...12calcutta.html A-Jay Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted August 30, 2012 Super User Posted August 30, 2012 The BPS Pro Qualifier comes in a couple of low speed options. It is a very good reel for the money in my experience. They are often available on sale for $80. A great value. Quote
jj'sbassinforfun Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 I absolutely love cranking! I own both the Revo winch and the Shimano Chronarch 201e5. I would call it a draw between them. Both reels will throw big baits with ease and pretty loose(cast control) even in a good wind. Both handle DT16, 6XD and DD22's with little strain on the user. DT6, shad raps and SK 3 series required them both to be tightened up in windy conditions. A note: I used them both on the same rod with the same line so both had a fair shot. I'll give the 201e5 the longer cast honors, But the winch had the least stress on the user after a long day of cranking. Dislikes for the winch are the crummy knobs on the handle(easily swapped out once the revo shop stuff is available) and the 201e5 was the white paint job. Very minor in my book and actually am very pleased with both. I couldn't choose between the 2 myself! If you plan on throwing monster baits these two are the tops IMHO. Honorable mention is the Crazy cranker by Diawa, but much more $$$! If you are only planing on throwing medium cranks? Then by all means add the PQ to the mix(I own one as well). It does fine with the light to medium baits, But its a bit tougher on the user when throwing the monster stuff. You get a workout for sure! But the dual braking is more forgiving when tuning for the lighter baits. The new gen3 winch with its dual braking might be worth the wait, Could be good for all around. Dual braking for the lighter baits, Plus the low gearing and extended handle to cope with the monsters. Just my thoughts(yeah, I'll be getting a new winch next season). Lew's could also be a good option, But I haven't researched them because I'm a lefty. Quote

Super User rockchalk06 Posted August 31, 2012 Super User Posted August 31, 2012 BPS Pro Qualifier has an option for a 4.7 : 1 gear ratio which is a bit lower than some other manufacturers Agreed. Untill Abu makes a 4.7:1, I will probably always keep my PQ on my cranking rod. Quote
jj'sbassinforfun Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Just fyi! The gears from the PQ's fit into the revo's!! A friend was looking for a solid deep cranker, but didn't like the looks of the winch. He opted for the revo S. I had a set of gears(BPS-PQ 4.7:1) and stuffed them in for him. So with the reel on sale for $99 and $20 for the gearset. He's happily deep crankin with his S for about $120. Quote
