Is 50 pound braid to much for a spinning reel? It has a 12LB diameter. I would be using this with a scum frog and humpin toads. Pretty heavy weeds. And can I just spool it straight braid? I hear someone saying that you need to use mono for backing but I think that is just for baitcasters right?

You can use 50# if that's what you have, but I prefer no more than 30# on spinning gear and like 20# best. I do use mono backing to save on the braid, and prevent slipping.

Backing such as mono or some tape wrapped around the arbor keep the line from slipping. Doubt it makes much difference whether it is a spinning reel or a b/c reel. Some spinning reel spools are designed for braid. No backing or tape needed. 50# braid is going to be a bit much for a small reel. Solve by buying a larger size reel. Check out the reels capacity. Don't know of one offhand that doesn't give you the amount of line it will hold for different diameters (usually 3 sizes are listed).

So I should get 30#? Like is that what most people use? What type of knot should I do for that?

I guess I will just go with 30# SpiderWire braid then. Thank you guys. Still need to know what knot is best for tying backing.

50 lb braid is serious overkill for bass fishing.... unless you plan on fishing for saltwater striped bass.

what size spinning reel is it? you could use 50 on a 4000 or larger spinning reel. i frog fish with a spinning reel and use 30lb braid though. 30 seems to be more then enough for the scum/weeds i fish

A Uni to Uni knot is sufficient to tie backing to your braid. Use no more than 30# on your reel.

Could you use 50# braid, sure, but why would you? I use nothing heavier than 15# braid fishing Florida slop for bass, I don't use backing myself but there is nothing wrong with doing so, an alberto knot will work well. I get no slippage going all braid, I use a wrap of masking tape, even with braid ready reels.

I do a lot of saltwater fishing and I don't use anything heavier than 20# braid, I may get spooled but my line isn't breaking.

Have to agree here. But then I don't fish a lot of slop like some of the guys here do. And I see plenty of use of 50 and up on TV to pitch/flip into thick cover, but I caught my PB on 10lb braid + leader in slop, so....
