I have a Revo STX in 7.1:1 and am thinking about pre ordering one of the new Revo S models.

Which reel would make a better top water/light swim bait/weightless plastics reel?

And which would make a better Jig/Texas rig reel?

I have rods for both all ready but just wondering which would make the better reel for the tech.

Thanks in advance

Im thinking youd want the stx for the speed with jigs and t rigs but youd probably need to try both to see if the s can handle the weightless plastics or not

In all honesty, a 6.4:1 is a great all-around ratio. I like it for moving baits, like swim jigs or spinnerbaits. It will take up line on a jig bite quick enough also.

However, the question is which is BETTER. I think in your case, the 7.1:1 is a better choice.

My rule of thumb is this: if I'm fishing a technique that requires me to take up slack line on a constant basis (jigs, plastics, top waters, frogs, just about any bottom technique) I opt for the fastest retrieve I can muster (7.0+). However, when talking about moving bait (cranks, spinnerbaits, buzz baits, etc) I like the slower 6.4:1.

It's worth mentioning that I only have one 5.4:1 sitting on a glass rod that I use for shallow and deep cranks. Nothing else. But I've caught more fish on a 6.4:1 than a 5.4:1.

Good luck!

The new Revo S look sweet. Initially I was gonna get a new SX, but the S on a Veritas would look and fish sweet.

just get 1 of each 3rd gen problem solved.......................................

I have 2 S models and 1 SX I use my S's for jigs and texas rigs my SX is now my frog and spinnerbait reel. Last season I used my SX for jigs its a HS my S's are not I noticed no difference though in hook up percentages from going from 7.1:1 to the 6.4:1.

I also prefer a faster reel for pitching and flipping jigs etc but the STX will cast better, especially the lighter baits. The S casts fine but in this case I think you'll be happier with the S as the pitching reel and the ratios are close enough. It will come down to personal preference at the end of the day.

Thanks guys. I have the STX now and 7'11" Heavy rod coming so I will make that my pitching and jig rod and wait for the S to come out.

I bought the Reno mix early this spring in 7.9.1...Abu states it's a similar retrieve speed to the high speed 7.1.1 ratios- reason being the ultra low profile or something along those lines.

I love my mgx, so much that I bought another yo pair with a Loomis NRX. However, was talking with a guy at work about reels and he made a comment that a 7.9.1 gear ratio was way to

I fish a jig or T-rig 99% or my time on the water so I think the high speed probably fits me well, but it has left me wondering if I'm passing up some fish. But then I concluded the speed at which you physically reel the spool is more of a factor than gear ratio and varies as we wish depending on the situation.

If you can't tell already fishing really makes my OCD rear it's ugly head at times, right up there with cooking : /
