Kristo.Agui001 Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Hey I was just wondering how many rods and non tournament angler should have....I fish jigs, t and c rigged plastics, cranks, poppers and frogs and hard a soft swim baits....I read the article on choosing the right rod for each type of lure but I figured that would be for tournament anglers I fish very often but wanted to know what a beginner Angler should have? Thanks Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted August 27, 2012 Super User Posted August 27, 2012 Every fisherman should have as many rods as he (or she) can afford. We've got a whole industry counting on us. Should every fisherman restrict their purchases to just what they needed an entire industry would collapse. Do you want that on your shoulders? 4 Quote
Kristo.Agui001 Posted August 27, 2012 Author Posted August 27, 2012 Lol well aren't you passionate? Apart from how many setups an angler should have I wanted to know what types of set ups those would include like specific actions and power etc. thanks Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Ideally 3: MH/F casting - T-rigs, jigs etc M/F Spinning for lighter baits (<1/2) MH/Mod cranks and other trebel hook lures MH/F is probably the most versatile for one all around rod. If you have any one type of terrain or technique you fish you can add a specific setup for that. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted August 27, 2012 Super User Posted August 27, 2012 Nice one Fishes in trees Personally I have 4 higher quality combos 1 for jigs, 1 for frogs, 1 for t rigs, 1 for everything else. Then I have 3 lower end combos that fill when I need them. Also I carry 1 spinning combo for the off chance I want to throw some really light stuff or drop shot. Quote
Kristo.Agui001 Posted August 27, 2012 Author Posted August 27, 2012 Awesome thanks for the info really appreciate it Quote
Super User J Francho Posted August 27, 2012 Super User Posted August 27, 2012 4-8 combos is what I usually brought as a co angler. A lot of what you bring depends on the boater's game plan. A beginner angler, should probably start out with the three DVT mentioned. As your skill increases, you'll develop a preference for a certain type of rod for specific situations. Until then, multi purpose setups is the right move. Quote
Kristo.Agui001 Posted August 27, 2012 Author Posted August 27, 2012 Yea that makes a lot of sense, thanks J Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted August 27, 2012 Super User Posted August 27, 2012 I'm at the point that I carry 8. The way I explain it to my wife is this way. You can play golf with only 3 to 4 clubs and get by, but to do it well you need more. Does a golfer really need a sand wedge, a 9 iron would work. How many drivers does a golfer need, I know some carry 4. As one develops the need (or is it an excuse) for more rod set ups emerge. As a co-angler I ask the owner how many rods I can bring, I'm their guest and do not want to assume I can litter the deck with my set ups. If I'm limited to three I take a 7 M/F that I use for small worms, senkos, spinner baits, etc, a 7MH/F for big worms, jigs, frogs and a 7 Crankbait set up, I can get by with these three and fish anyway I want, if I need to drop shot I just put a 3/8 sinker on the 7 medium set up. Kristo.Agui001 Posted August 28, 2012 Author Posted August 28, 2012 Lol nice, lucky me I only have a girlfriend right now so I don't need to explain to her haha....but when I do settle down I will use that explanation thanks man!!! Quote
fishking247 Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 i have a lot of rods and reels but you can narrow it down to about 3-4. Quote
11justin22 Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 I could narrow it down to three and sometimes do when I go down to the small local lake in my little 12' vbottom. But when I'm in a regular boat or a tournament I usually have 6 Quote
Jake P Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 DVT hit it on the head. 3 is all you need to start with. I fish with my father in law so space is limited in the boat between both of our tackle and setups so we bring 3 a piece. I use a 7MH/F for jigs and heavy t rigs. 7ft M/ MOD F for all trebles since I dont really deep crank this will handle my lipless cranks and squarebills. lastly is my only spinning setup and I dont use it very often but if im going to throw something light I use my 7 M/F spinning combo. With those 3 you can do just about anything. Like previously mentioned though, once you get going you will become accustomed to certain lures or presentations and you can buy accordingly from there. Good luck and try not to over think it. That is a common problem when entering a never ending money sucking habit like fishing! Quote
Kristo.Agui001 Posted August 29, 2012 Author Posted August 29, 2012 So true man I walk in to bass pros and im like what the hell?!? I just want it all!!! Quote

I'm sorry DVT and others, but this is the only sane answer cuz I know I'm sane. Quote

Thanks Everyone will have a different opinion but for me I use a total of 6: Top water rig Pitching rig Texas rig for heavier weights Cranking rig Light jig light Texas rig Spinnging rod for light weight plastics or drop shot. It may be overkill but works well for me Quote
JigMe Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 I started with a spinning setup for soft plastics, and you can start from there. Then build up your own inventory as you go, and figure out your own fishing style. Some folks prefer Jig, others like cranks. Do you need 8-10 rods to catch bass, probably not? Personally, I have 5 setups. Most productive setup for me is 6’6 spinning for plastic, and 7’ MH for Jig/swim jig. Quote
buzzfrog Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 I think 4 I use MH-fast spinning for my T-rigs 1x 7MH-M for all cranks at moment 1x 7'4 H for pitchen, i can also use for heavy C rig-1 oz spinnerbaits aswell then a 7 M for weightless, lite shakey and spinnerbaits. what i use is differant, i am obsessed with topwater so 1x MH veritas for buzzbaits 1x M 6'6 carbonlite for poppers and spooks 1x custom 7'2 H for frogs, hollow bellied 1x 6'8 MH sellus for spinnerbaits, swim jigs and an occasional chatter 1x MH 7' spinning vendettta for most T and C-rigged worms 1x MH 7' veritas spinning for T-rigged everything else, or weighted small swim baits 1x M 7' falcon HD for shakey and weightless 1x Croix Premier 7' MH-Mod fro cranks 1x Daiwa ballistic XH 7'3 for pitchen soft plastics, or all-around pitchen-fishes like a H 1x 7'6 american made all star H for pitchen 1x not used much Shimano clarus, for horny toads and borrowed by bro for occasional Frog, since out home lake a MH can get frogs done. See i am not brand loyal so i help keep america running lol i think mabye 2 of the above are American made lol Quote
buzzfrog Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 who to me, lol and i want to add a 7'10 cranking since i just got a boat. when i did the shore, id usally carry 5 and leave one in car. my favorite is frogs and ptichen, lol now with a boat it makes the pitchen so much easier, pitchen was my least sucessful, id always catch them ptichen under docks, but it was rare that no boats was comming in so i could have a proper chance, so now all my rods will get good use.. Kristo.Agui001 Posted August 30, 2012 Author Posted August 30, 2012 That's awesome man congrats on that!!! I wish I had a boat Quote
buzzfrog Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 well more of pontoon, its a new toy now, but give it a month, may be septmeber, but i wll be fishing then, once the newness wears off. the rest of family wil go meh, and it will be my time to shine Quote
Kristo.Agui001 Posted August 31, 2012 Author Posted August 31, 2012 Lol cool! I just hope I learn some patience and start catching some fish....I gotta work on so much stuff it's not even funny and the worst part is ....no time!!! Quote
I.rar Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 i had 4 rigs at one time that i could cover various techniques with. over time i developed a liking for light tackle. so i never really used it all. eventually i got rid of my MH and M gear except for one 6'8" M/F compre with a 51e. it was nice having it all, but was no use if i never used it. im left with 2 combos that i feel i can always catch fish on, the 6'8" M/F with a 51e and a 6'8" L/F with a saros 1000f. it also comes down to preference. at least in my case...
