I love the older USA made Schrades, especially the folders. The Uncle Henry line was, for the most part, stainless steel blades, while the Old Timer line had carbon steel. The more common stockman and trappers can still be found for a relatively good price on ebay, especially if you are looking for a good user. And they are a LOT cheaper than a lot of the ones mentioned above, such as Emerson, Strider, SOG, Spyderco, etc.

I will also go a little different direction with a suggestion. I strongly understand the desire to buy American made. But if what you are looking for is a user that will take a beating and not kill the wallet, look at the Rough Rider or Colt knives. Yes, they are made in China, but they have a pretty good reputation even on some of the more hardcore knife forums for exactly what they are, users that you can beat up and not be afraid to lose. They can be perfect for a first knife for kids, and many can be had for $10-15 on ebay. Again, not my preferred way to go, but if it will fit the need, you could do worse.

^^^got a chineese made S&W for 8 bucks not a smooth opener but good strong lock and decent blade. If u look there are some nice Buck, Kabar and bench made that are reasonable but made in Taiwan. Look into Moore Maker/bear & son for some decent carbon steel folders US made.

I carry a Cross Knife in the woods. it is a very resonably priced custom. It is a small drop point knife that is perfect in the field. It is made here in the United States using an A2 tool steel (carbon steel). The steel is all domestic steel. Sharp isn't even close to explaining the edge. And the knife is warrantied for the life of the knife maker. Carbon steel has it's advantages if you take care of it.

I anyone here happens to be looking for a great fixed-blade "beater" knife, the Swedish Mora knives are to beat for the price. Not American made, but definitely light years ahead of the Chinese flea market crap you typically see in stores around here.

I have a couple of them, and keep one in the console of the truck at all times. I hit the blade with a bit of "cold blueing" to help with rust prevention since it's exposed to temp/humidity extremes, and it still looks great after four years.

Here is the Esee Izula II I just picked up. perfect size for the pocket and love the micarta handle.

Made in the USA with a lifetime warranty, can't beat it. It is 1095 carbon steel with a black powder coat.

2-5/8" blade and about 6-3/4" total length. And the knife w/ plastic sheath will only set you back $60

(leather sheath not included)

Is the leather sheath made by the same company?

The sheath is by sharpshooter sheath systems, think it is called the Purdhoe bay. It is also made in the USA. That one costs $17-25 depending where u purchase it. It fits nicely in back or from pocket. It was made for the Esee knife in mind but will fit up to a 5" blade so you can carry other brands and lengths. They have a wide range of sheaths though, some u can stick a knife, flash light and plyers in.

I have dozens of knives. Buck, Schrade, Case, Bear, Opinel, Bulldog... Most of the time they all are in a drawer. I carry a Swiss Army knife everyday now. The Hiker to be exact.

My everyday carry is a .38 special +P :)

As far as knives go, for $60 do yourself a favor and buy one of these. http://www.crkt.com/...earch_id=164289

Assisted Opening has been around for a while but not like this. It has an "internal knife ball-bearing system". And it is ridiculous!

Words wont do justice to how smooth and fast this knife is.

Like I said, do yourself a favor.
