Daddyodo Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Hey guy's, question for you. In the next couple of weeks I will be looking to buy a new rod. This rod will be my "do everything rod" from spinner baits to plastics. I do not fish enough to know what the differences are in rods as far as the different baits you can use. I only have about $100 to $125 to spend on this. Do not tell to wait until I have more money because I won't have it . So, with this said what rod would you buy? Quote
bigdawg74 Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 i have a 6.6 shimano clarus mediam and a pflueger president reel that was under 150 in total and so far it has been used for everything includeing a 27inch rainbow last week and 2 salmon, sun fish bass and everything in between.my only other rod is a 20$ microlite from wallmart that i got to use for fishing panfish with the kids. KDW96 Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 I WOULD GO TO WALLY WORLD AND CHECK OUT THE BERKLEY SHOCK ROD.IT WAS 39.99. I HAVE ONE OF THE 7FT.MH AND HAS DONE A GREAT JOB WITH SPINNERBAITS,SQUAREBILLS,EVEN JIGS AND WORMS.DONT GET CAUGHT UP IN WHAT BRANDS IN FAD OR A NAME. YOUD STILL HAVE MONEY LEFT FOR A BLACK MAX REEL59.99 ALSO AT WALLY WORLD. JUST A THOUGHT....GOOD LUCK Quote
The Rooster Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Does this need to include rod and reel or just the rod only?? If I only had one, I'd get a medium powered rod with fast action tip as a "do all" rod. Length of rod is personal preference but for me it would be 6'6". This rod is soft enough to work ok with treble lures but sturdy enough to work with standard sized plastics rigs also. It will have its limitations though. Since this rod must do it all then get a spinning rod. It can cast light weight baits down to 1/8 oz., and up to moderate sized baits in the 3/4 oz. range. A rod that fits this description well would be the Pflueger President combo. $80 and money left over for line and some baits. Walmart usually has these. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 26, 2012 Super User Posted August 26, 2012 i have a 6.6 shimano clarus mediam and a pflueger president reel I fish this set up except with a 30 supreme. It's good for pond use but for an all around setup, especially if there is some heavy vegetation, I think you need more backbone. Not suggesting anyone buy this, but when I need something a bit heavier I use an med 8/17 calico jack and a supreme 35, cost $55 and $99, I've even caught snook on this outfit. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted August 26, 2012 Super User Posted August 26, 2012 Abu Vendetta M 7'. Its got the backbone to handle just about anything. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 26, 2012 Super User Posted August 26, 2012 Check out the rods for sale in our Flea Market. As far as what you need generically, The Rooster gave you good advice: 6 1/2'-7' MF (medium power/ fast action). For another $75-$85 you can probably fins a gently used Shimano Symetre reel to go with you new rod. Occasionally this or similar combos pop up in our Flea Market. The combination I have suggested should run $150-$175 if sold as a package. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted August 26, 2012 Super User Posted August 26, 2012 Rooster gave you good advice. After you've aquired the spinning rod try to scratch up a bait casting rod/reel with similar characteristics. Your tool box needs both a hammer and a screw driver. oe Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted August 26, 2012 Super User Posted August 26, 2012 Take some free advise that I went through when I got back into fishing BC's. Spend some time testing, reading etc etc with rods and reels. Be patient and wait for a killer deal. If you grab the first thing you see or get something because it's über cheap, it will just discourage you. I have been patiently waiting for a Revo S to pop up here cheap. I snagged a super deal on a Revo STX and a C3 both like new for 107 dollars. I will sell the C3 and probably be in the Revo STX for around 40-50 bucks. Patients pays off. Onto your one rod. I really like the Berkley Lighting Shock rod. Light, strong, split cork grip, 40% exposed reel seat, fast tip and plenty of backbone. Another big plus is the 40 dollar price tag. That being said, if you have the money. I have fallen in love with my Abu Garcia Veritas. I love it so much I bought 2 more and have plans for 3 more after that. Same features as the Shock rod, but fully exposed reel seat and super light. I can't get enough of this rod. Quote
Daddyodo Posted August 26, 2012 Author Posted August 26, 2012 I have a BPS Pro Qualifier on a BPS TOURNEY Rod that I do not really like . I do not like the POWER HUMP handle. Love the PRO QUALIFIER. Looked at a Veritas at Dicks the other day and I could not believe how light it was. I need to explain better what I am after. I have a spinning rod and real that I am happy with but I really want to start using my PRO QUALIFIER more. So when I say "ONE ROD" I am talking about for the baitcaster. I cannot afford a rod for all the different types of baits so I was looking for "one" that would handle everything. Quote
j.bruno Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 People often forget about the Mickey mouse rod / reel combo! Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted August 26, 2012 Super User Posted August 26, 2012 One rod at that price range... I would go with ST. Croix premier. If its going to be your go to rod for various applications I would get 7ft MH. It will fit inside your budget. Quote
Diggy Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 if you go with the veritas the m is more like mh and mh is more like a h 6ft6 - 7ft m may serve you well. I have a 7ft mh one..6ft 9 may be your sweet spot. You can find them as low as 60 dollars on the net at times...which I didnt know before I got mine They come in both standard and microguide versions also If you do buy from dsg, use the 10 dollar off coupon from a survey Quote
The Rooster Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 For one bait cast rod only, to go with an already owned spinning rod AND provided that that spinning rod is as I described above in my first post, being a M/F spinning rod, then I'd get a MH/F casting rod to use for jigs and spinnerbaits, Texas rigs and plastics in general. The spinning rod can handle the lighter baits and treble hook lures. You might even go MH/XF instead if you want a stouter rod, depends on your needs. I'd use the two rods side by side, spinning and casting. For one do all bait cast rod without a spinning rod to accompany it, I'd get a M/F rod. Quote
fishking247 Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 if you want an all purpose rod i highly recommend a spinning rod. with a spinning rod you can toss light baits a lot easier then a baitcaster. 7' Medium action st croix premier can basically do it all. although, if you fish heavy cover and/or frogs i recommend stepping it up to the medium heavy Quote
Flywatersmallie Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Denali Jadewood WJ843. Great general purpose stick right at $100. Will balance nicely with your PQ. I run Quantum Catalysts on mine, similar in weight. Nice feeling combos Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 27, 2012 Super User Posted August 27, 2012 I'm a fan of spinning gear, not that I don't have different combos for various situations but if needed I could get by with just one. I use a med 7' inshore rod (I don't really think the blank is any different) 8/17 lure rated up to 3/4 oz. I consistanly throw lighter lures as well as 1 oz lures for snook, tarpon and jack crevelles, I use 4000 for the line capacity. Not uncommon to take this same combo and bass fish with it. A lot of good choices out there, have to experiment to see what you like the best, I use a few brands and like them all. Quote
