Jake P Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Weeds and spinnerbaits are like pb&J. Go to the search bar in the top right corner and search spinnerbaits. You will find everything you need to know and then some. Good luck!! Quote
cast_and_destroy Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 One of my go-to lures . Its great for covering alot of water and finding fish. Spinning gear is fine , but definitely look into a baiticacting gear . ( medium heavy rod , fast tip ) mono vs fluorocarbon is your choice. mono floats , fluorocarbon is more sensitive and abrasion resistant. This site has more great tips. Quote
fishking247 Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 spinnerbaits have always been hit or miss with me. i can't say i hate them but can't say i love them. i recommend buying a few 3/8oz and give em a shot. they do work well in windy conditions Quote
tipptruck1 Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Spinner baits other then lip less crank baits. Are my number one bait. I throw it them on a med-heavy rod with a bait caster. My line choice is a minimum of 15 lb test mono. I tried fluro for a summer. I just didn't like it for some reason. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted August 26, 2012 Super User Posted August 26, 2012 I'll be watching this thread. I have never caught a fish with a spinnerbaits or buzz air for that matter. I have also tried every cadence retrieval humanly possible so I have concluded the areas I fished either had no fish or it was something they didn't want. I have had success with inline spinners so go figure. Quote
bleedingshrimp Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 I was sucessful using spinners for the first time today actually. I was throwing 3/8 oz booyah on 30 lb. braid. M/f 7'0 bc equipment. I paralleled the bank throwing from about 20 yards out. I was surprised just how shallow it could be effective at. Here are some tips I picked up.... + use a trailer hook. + reel slack, pop the rod after cast to get the blade moving + throw around and in between timber or any stick ups or laydowns. + don't be afraid to bump into said cover + vary retrieve, reel til you see the blade flash, then slow downand work it through the water column. 1 Quote
tnriverluver Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Spinnerbaits use to be my go to bait of choice. Learned to always use a trailer hook and probably 50% plus of my catches would be on it. Due to a bad arm I mainly use soft plastics now since my arm can't take the constant strain of casting and retrieveing heavier baits. Quote
BassAssassin726 Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 One of my favorite tactics is spinnerbaits around sunken logs and branches. Cast it out past the tree and bring it in, bump the limbs and such. Something that works very well for me is to bring it right into a limb, pull it over and as soon as it clears the limp kill it and let it fall and hold on tight, awesome reaction strikes doing that. You can use trailer hook if you desire but i dont usually. If fish are short striking you need to change skirt color or blade color and that will get them to commit. Id reccomend baitcasting gear because spinning gear doesnt have the backbone to set the hook since spinnerbaits have big heavy wire hooks on them. One thing i learned on here from a video by Glen is buying Lumaflex skirts. Theyre hard to find but if you do find them theyre only like 10 bucks for 100 skirts. They flex and undulate way better than any other skirt in my opinion. Also your cast is everything. Do not overhand cast. Underhand or backhand is best because it will keep the bait low and cause it to gently enter the water. You can do everything right but if your blades are clapping on the surface when you cast youre just spooking fish. Search on here "advanced spinnerbait fishing" lots of good info in that video. Good luck out there. 1 Quote
Talmadge Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 ive hooked my biggest bass ever on a firetiger strikeking spinner bait he looked about 8 pounds but barley hit so i didnt set the hook right when i saw him he got away my advice is hooksets are free dont be afraid to set it if you feel anything at all i thought it was just some weeds so i didnt set after that ive set all the time and its defiantly paid off my personal best barley hit but i set the hook not knowing if it was weeds or not and ended up being a nice fish. wademaster1 Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 spinnerbaits are great; they dont hang up and snag easily and with a quick retrieve they produce a reaction strike like no other; my biggest bass come on a spinner bait that was black with red flakes in it with a silver blade; i run these lures wide open by stucture and cover and when a bass hits it then its on; good luck with them Quote
