tugsandpulls Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 just picked up a silvermax for my crankbait rod and although its at the near bottom of there lineup i love it im looking forward to xmas to get a revo, quantumn is nice out of the box but now there showin wear with only 2 seasons and my pinnacle is still going good but will replace the pinnacle with the revo Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted August 25, 2012 Super User Posted August 25, 2012 I hear ya on that one. I started with a Silver Max as the deal was too good to pass up. While its not a revo by any means, I really like it. I bought a Pro Max NIB off eBay for 37 dollars last week and scored two like new Black Max's off the flea market here last week too. Last night bought a Revo STX and C3 from the flea market here too. I'm starting to scare myself lol Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted August 25, 2012 Super User Posted August 25, 2012 I don't think you will be disappointed with Abu's. They are great reels, they get better the higher you go up the line. 2 Quote

I have had my silver max for a while and despite all the Curado owners negative talk about what its made of and its durability, it has not given me one problem. I love it and would recommend it to anyone who was looking in the price range. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted August 25, 2012 Super User Posted August 25, 2012 I love Abu Round Reels, I have a couple of the Ext Pros, awesome reel, one is autographed by Hank Parker. The only complaint I've ever had is that round reels don't mix well with light weights. I've never had a Revo, but Abu has been around forever and build a quality product. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted August 25, 2012 Super User Posted August 25, 2012 I'm thinking the Abu posse is getting stronger especially with these gen 3's coming I love my Revo'sI have 2 S's and a SX then a BCX round one for catfish. Quote
kylek Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 I have 4 of the silvermax reels and like them all. I have never had any issues with them in the year that I have owned them. Quote

What do you consider a light weight for round reels? I had been wanting to try a small Abu round reel, so when a deal for 3 Black Max 1600C reels came up, I jumped on it. Haven't tried lighter, but know it will throw a 1/4 oz. lure with ease. Plus I was amazed at how well it was able to cast in a fairly high wind. I did backlash some one time when I tried to throw for the moon directly into that stiff breeze. Easing up on power resulted in no more backlashes. I have it mounted on a Medium 6'9" Daiwa V.I.P. Smallmouth rod. I've also thrown a small fluke with a bare EWG hook with no problems. No idea of total weight, but I can tell you in ain't heavy! I believe I will be mounting one of the others on my 7' Cara cranking rod. The reel palms well enough for me which was a bit if a surprise as I never thought round reels were for palming. Quote
basshole8190 Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 got the pro max brand new from a pawn shop for 30$ still in the box best reel i own i like the silver max too for the flippin switch or at least thats what i use it for. ive been fishing abu since i was 11 wit my first bc being an ambassadour Quote
Western-Mass-Bass Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Im the proud owner of the sx, the revo winch, and a hank parker lp from abu. ( probably a pro max.) I love them all Quote
Weapon X Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 I have the Pro Max (4) and I like them a lot , just this past weekend I caught a 4lb bass on one of them and was impressed at how it held up. I have had them now for maybe a month now and am interested at how they will perform come spring when the big girls move shallow . The true test comes when you have a 10lb plus on the line and they hit like a freight train wreck and pull like dog sled team . I have fished with Abu Garcia reels since I was a kid and they have never failed me.... Hope you enjoy your Silver 1 Quote
RyneB Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 I have 5 Revo Ss, 1 Premier, 1 Orra Inshore and 1 STX. I only use Abus. You will not be dissapointed. Abu for life Quote
boatlesswonder Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 I have several of the Abu round reels mounted on various Loomis and Fenwick rods. Never have had an issue with them that I have not caused myself great reels. Like them much better than the low profile ones. But to each his/her own Quote

With that said I could throw a 3/16 jig with a trailer probably brought the weight up to 3/8 oz. with any reel line capacity and amount of line on the spool has more to do with casting light baits. A 1600 should cast light baits just fine. Quote

The only mod I've done to it is replacing the white brake blocks with the lighter weight blue ones. I did the same mod on my old-school ProMax 3600c and it casts much better now. The same blocks (Abu part# 20209) will fit the Black Max 1600, iirc. Tom Quote
TNBassin' Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 The only problem with the Max reels is the side to side play in the handle/gear box. I know some is normal, but the Max reels have a ton of it compared to my SX. I have a Black Max 2 and it works great, but I wonder if that play will someday kill the gear box? Quote
BassHunter_Hunt Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 I have two Veritas with more to come in the future with two Pro max reels. I trying to upgrade in reels but so far they are doing their jobs just fine. Abu Garcia for life. Quote

TNBassin' Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 I'm an Abu guy too, but I did sneak an Okuma in my arsenal as I love those Trio spinning reels. I currently have 2 Vendetta rods, a Revo SX, Black Max 2, and am about to pre order a new Revo S and pick up a Veritas. Their stuff is great quality, and it looks just as nice as it fishes. Can't stand the colors that Shimano picks for their reels. Quote
Hanover_Yakker Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 I have several as well, including 2 Gen 1 Revo S, 1 Gen 1 Revo Inshore, and the newest member of the family is a Record 60HC for live lining. Quote
Diggy Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 Im on my way there, I plan to buy more. Quote
