reelon Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I'm looking to get a spinning combo, but don't want to spend a lot of money on it, so isaac considering to get a pflueger trion combo or a Gander mtn combo, both sale for about 70.00. Anyone has any experience with any of these combos? Thanks. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted August 25, 2012 Super User Posted August 25, 2012 My dad has the 70$ GM combo. The reel is pretty good, and the rod is just okay. But most combos are like that. You pay for the reel, and get a cheap rod. Not saying the rod is bad though. It'll be better than the Pfleuger. Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 I haven't bought a GM combo but I have bought separate GM rods & reels. I own several GM GST series of sinning reels and love them. I've had them for several years and they have had zero problems. They fish as well as many other more ( much more ) expensive reels. I don't think that they make that particular series any longer. I'm almost sure that they were a virtual Pflueger Medalist clone as I own several of both. I've got 2 or 3 GM rods and they work fine as well. A couple of my GM reels I have purchsed via e-bay for maybe 25% of the store price if not even less. If you bid on E-bay you have to stick to your $ plan. Don't bid to win just bid to get the deal that you want. I haven't bid for quite a while but I know that towards the end of my online shopping that it was becoming much harder to get a deal. In order to win I always had to put in a bid at the wire and hope for a lucky win which I did several times! Often GM has rods on sale and a second rod cna be had for 1/2 price. Good luck. Quote
jerzeeD Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 The trion is a good setup from what I have seen. Ill vouch for the reel and my buddy has been beating up 2 combos for the past 4 seasons with no issues. Quote
ChrisAW Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Most of their reels are made by the same people that make Pflueger. The X-Factor spinning reel is just the older Supreme XT in black and red instead of gold/yellow and silver. Baitcasters were Quantum's, rods are made by a company called GLV International. I never bought any of their combo's, but I never heard any real complaints about them when I worked for them. I do have 4 of their GSX Elite II Basalt rods and those things are work horses, but still feel great. Quote
