What part of Texas is the best? My deployment has 3-4 months left in it and iv been working on my resume to start sending out for jobs. The wife and I have been talking bout moving to Texas for some time now but the state is so d**n big idk where to even look lol. We don't like big cities at least not to live in we like to be a short drive away. I'd like to work in the oil industry as a field service tech but will do almost anything like Security, Auto/diesel Tech, Law Enforcement. I'v heard some good things bout the DFW area is there anywhere else I should look at or avoid for that matter. Corpus Christi looks like a good area and iv been told Odessa isn't worth moving to pretty much,

I will give a full reply when I'm not killing my lunch break on BR on my phone. for now I will say DFW and explain why later.

I'v heard a lot of people recommend the DFW area I just spent a good hour and a half almost 2 hours on rigzone.com looking at the 1800 oilfield jobs in Texas I didn't see many DFW ones though unless they are there but I don't know surrounding towns or cities so i over looked it. I did see a lot for Houston, Midland, Odessa, Corpus Christi

Go somewhere near a Prison. Texas DOC pays very well and most times requires little to no experience to get hired. Lengthily background though. It's a state job. You will not get transferred like Federal. You will be employed through any economy crash too.

Plus once you get trained should you decide to move, you can always transfer to another Texas state prison. Most prisons are in smaller communities

I vote the DFW area or one of its surrounding city's listed below.

Frisco - ESPN listed it as the best place to raise an athlete and its kinda a cool up and coming place.

Lewisville - Not a bad place to live and there is always Lake Lewisville.

Flower Mound - I use to live around that area and its not to bad.

Denton - Yes it is a college town but its growing up fast and personally I like it. Then again I'm a bias college senior attending UNT.

Mckinny - Just got voted as one of the top places to live in the whole country.

Those are just some ideas to help narrow your search down a little bit. You can also do what my family did and buy some property out of the city and move out in the country. Yes there are no stores and you are at least 15 away from the closest town. That being said I wouldn't trade living in the country for all the shopping and night life in the world!

Just my $0.02 good luck finding a place and hope you get here fast!

DFW is the place to be In your situation. Moving into the "country" i guess you could say would eliminate alot of job opportunities. DFW, mainly the mid cities area is not in the city but close enough to Dallas or Fort Worth. I have lived in just about every city in the mid cities area and HEB (HEB= Hurst, Euless and Bedford). I am 13 min from Downtown Ft. Worth and about 16 from downtown Dallas. There a ton of jobs in either Dallas or Fort Worth and living in the Mid cities or heb area would give you access to either side of town without having to drive a long distance.

You mentioned Oil more than once if im correct. There are a ton of rigs close by. They are all 60 miles away or less but considering when your in the oil indrustry traveling is almost a must, an hour drive isnt too terribly bad. My brother in law just moved up here from Mcallen which is south Texas close to Mexico. His rig put him up in Boyd which is about 48 miles from here and he makes it in less than an hour. What im getting at is basically if you were to live in DFW, mainly the mid cities area, you are no more than 1 hour from just about any work opportunity.

Another thing to look at is School systems. Your boys mainly your oldest will be in school soon if im correct. HEB is not only top 5 in Texas but i believe it is tops in the nation. Just about all the schools in DFW aside from the inner city schools that are mainly low income areas are some of the best you will find.

Like captain O said, Frisco and Mckinney are great areas to live in which are a little north of of The mid cities area. They are newer and more umm.......Nice cities. Very expensive cities.

So basically what Im saying is being between Dallas and Fort Worth gives you the opportunity for more work. Maybe if you moved to the mid cities area and found a job then you could move closer if it became a permanent job, but starting out i think this is the best area for you. Plenty of things to do around here for kids, adults and families.

The fishing is fair to excellent depending on where you go. Grapevine lake is closest to mid cities and is a decent fall lake. Other than that the bite is tough. Ray roberts is about 50 min north and it is an EXCELLENT lake. Crappie and Bass are abundant and BIG. Those are my 2 favorite and most frequented lakes in the area. There are alot more though. And dont forget, Lake Fork is only a short 2 hour drive from here.

Good luck and I hope you find what your looking for. Texas is a great place to live, im sure you and yours would be happy here. The people are friendly and helpful and genuinely nice. Although alot of us dont like Yanks so when you get here and sit down somewhere to eat, make sure you dont say soda or pop when the waitress asks you what you want to drink. All soft drinks are cokes. After she knows you want a coke then you can tell her which kind of coke you want. This way they wont mistake you for a yankee and spit on your burger. PM me if you have any questions.

Also, don't add a "u" sound to your words. It's football not footbull. Or "wow she is tull." Also its "yall" not "youse guys." That's my helpful advice.

Lastly tell all your friends and family that you hate it down here. Tell them its backwards and miserable. We don't need a mass migration of Carpet Baggers heading into the south, and by all that is Holy avoid Alabama at all costs. :D

I looked up there pay and after 91+ months of service which is 7.5 years the highest a CO can go according to there website for applications and screening process they only make about 70% of what I make now or If I just go active duty I think NY corrections pays more and NYS sucks lol.

So my neighbors from Brooklyn and the Bronx aren't a good representation of the rest of yall? I mean my buddy from Jersey and family from Michigan definitely have a Yankee accent. However these two are something else. I've called them out on the accent and was told that's how yall New Yorkers talk. Now your telling me there is a difference between New Yorkers and Upper State New Yorkers? Yall are some strange people up there.

It's not Jersey. It's Joisey.

Canadians don't say aye (eye), they say ehhhh as in long "A". Kinda like the Fonz yousta say it. The Canucks use it more as a question, at the end of a sentence. The Fonz used it more for emphasis. In Maine, they say ayuhh.

Ok another serious question as I'm a avid hunter and what ever state I move to I'll be in search of new hunting property and most likely I'll be stuck with hunting state land. How is the state land out there is there any I mostly predator hunt so maybe I can get in good with some ranchers taking care of pesky pigs and coyotes and lead it up to some Texas white tails. I also know Texas coyote season is year round big bonus for me as I'm limited to just a few months in NY.

Clayton if you move down here I will personally put you on some wild hogs. my buddy owns some land about about an hour and ahalf west of here and there are plenty of choices to hunt out there. North East of me about 3hours is hog heaven. My brother goes out there quite often and loves it. Ihavent been in a year or so though.

In Texas coyote and hogs are all year round. And I hear from my buddies that there a few areas along the Oklahoma border are over run with white tail.

Ray roberts is about 50 min north and it is an EXCELLENT lake.

x1,000,000,000,000 to this statement only I'm more like 15 min away :)

I'm exited to move down there I just thought of one thing though that might throw a curve ball but I gotta figure out if my wife wants to bring her horses down or not we have 2 horses man that would be a long haul ugh I thought I thought of everything and I just remembered we have horses lol.

Posted
I just remembered we have horses

Um unless you are worried about the moving expense why would you be worried because you have horses?

Dude this is Texas we have horse ranches bigger than some states! Seriously the two things every Texan knows how do drive is a truck and a horse.

If you don't want to haul'em down sell them and buy some when you get here. There are plenty of areas close to the cities that have enough property to keep two horses.]

Now if you had two penguins or a giant ice sculpture you can't live without then yeah that would be a curve ball.

Wouldn't loose any sleep over horses.LOL

If, for whatever reason, you are stuck on trying to get into oilfield work and can't find anything in TX, look into Wyoming. You might end up with a fly rod and elk hunting, but they were adding quite a few jobs out there last I knew.

Wyoming and North Dakota are adding a ton of jobs. I know for Electricians, Welders, and Fitters the pay is phenomenal. Currently they are paying as much or better than Alaska. As in 6 digit income a year. I've been debating it all year. I just haven't made up my mind yet. The money is calling me and I'm having trouble saying no. Time will tell if I grudgingly become a Yankee or not.

Hey Clayton, if I do go up there to work. Can you teach me how to speak Northern?
