cody161 Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I have a dilemma on my hands. My birthday is coming up and I'm wanting to add a cranking setup to what I already have. I will be throwing crankbaits that run from 8' deep all the way to 18'+. The two options that I am looking at are a 2nd generation Revo Winch paired with a 7' 6" Veritas MH Winch rod, or a Lew's Tournament MG Speed Spool (5.4:1) paired with a Lew's Tournament Speed Stick 7' cranking rod. Right now the Lew's setup has a $30 rebate through Tackle Warehouse, but I was really wanting a rod a little longer than 7'. What would be everyone's pick between these two setups? If anyone has any suggestions that are under $250.00 please list them and why you like them. I have to admit I really like Abu stuff, but trying other products is not out of the question. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted August 22, 2012 Super User Posted August 22, 2012 Personally, I'd go with the Winch/Veritas combo - basically for the longer MH rod. You'll appreciate that rod if you spend much time tossing the deep divers... Other recommendations? The rig you selected sounds pretty good. I'll have to admit that I have 4 cranking rods but all are inexpensive combos. I picked up 4 different BPS Crankin' Sticks at various times when they were on sale for $59 (6'ml, 7'ml, 7'6"m, 7'6"mh). Three of them have BPS PQ reels, one has a (discontinued) BPS Pro-Lite reel. I don't spend a lot of time cranking, but I do like variety and have different uses for all 4 rods - so, I got a lot of capability for not much $$$... Quote
rangerjockey Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I have a bunch of crankbait rods, most of them have ended up in the rafters of my basement. The one that never leaves the boat is the Denali jw843cb .It has enough tip to cast 1.5's and wiggle warts but strong enough for DD22's and 6xd's. Just a great all around crankbait rod. As to reels , I'm a shimano guy but the new Daiwa lexa looks interesting and I believe it will be available in a 4.9:1. Quote
cody161 Posted August 23, 2012 Author Posted August 23, 2012 Nobody else has an opinion on this matter? Quote
kylek Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 I would ask them if you could mount the reels on the rods and see which one feels better to you. I have always heard to use the longest rod especially for the deep divers. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted August 23, 2012 Super User Posted August 23, 2012 For deep divers I use a BPS crankin stick and a Shimano E5, I also have a Convergence crankbait rod that I have used the E5 on as well. I really really like that reel. I have had in the past the David Frittz reels that BPS put out, and also an Abu Garcia EXT pro that I used for shallow runners and lipless, my main reels for cranks now are the E5 on medium and deep runners or when I want a slower presentation, and a BPS Pro Qualifier in 6.3 for lipless and shallow runners. Deep diving cranks give your reel quite the work out, the reel is more important than the rod imo on deep divers Quote
Arv Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I've heard way better things about the Winch than the MG. If you were to go with a Lew's I'd get a Speed Spool or Tournament Speed Spool. I have the Tournament SS and I love it. For 140-160 that gives you about 100 for a rod. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted August 25, 2012 Super User Posted August 25, 2012 My cranking set up is a 7'6" MH Veritas with a Pro Qualifier in 4.7:1 ratio. I love this rod. It was my first Veritas rod. Since I have ordered 2 more. I have been throwing the smaller Bomber 1/4oz medium divers and man does that rod launch the crank. I have yet to use anything over a 1/2 oz crank as I dont have the deep waters from shore to do so. I am very happy with my set up. Quote

bassin is addicting Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 i just picked up the BPS crankin stick in MH ($59) and the BPS Pro Qualifier in the 5.3 ratio ($79) i'm real happy ......for the money ($140) i think i did pretty well. it's not that often that i get a chance to throw deep divers but this setup seems to handle everything i throw. Super User retiredbosn Posted December 5, 2012 Super User Posted December 5, 2012 that's a great deal and I think the Pro Qualifier will serve you well, the best bang for the buck for sure. Quote
