bigt89 Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 hello guys, i just got a spros bronzeeye frog in natural green. also got the powell max from rod with 65# pp braid on a curado 201. i just took it out last night with o luck at the usual lake. i watched the video on here how to walk a spro frog and it said its very easy. i will probabl ykick my self in the butt if i find out it was very easy and i was missing something so simple. and i could not get it to walk side to side. i pointed the rod tip down. (im on land if this means anything) did the twitching and up and down wont move side to side. can some one please help me with what i have to do or what i could be doign wrong? reall yappreciate it. also i just took the frog out of the package and put it on. i hope i can figure this out an dpactice up in my bak pond before i head out tonight. bigt89 Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 just tryed again and keeping the tip low and twitching does not a think all twitching with tip low does is move the slack in line Quote
Skeet22 Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Trim 3/4 of an inch off both legs and cut on an angle with the points to the outside. You have to twitch the rod tip pretty fast leaving slack in the line. Takes a little practice but fairly easy. Quote
bigt89 Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 trimmed about an inch of and still not easier getting it a little butwhen i twitch it the tip just keeps going in the water and the line still moves but dont do nothing to the frog unless i make a fast agreesive snap then it jumps out of water sometimes Quote
bigt89 Posted August 22, 2012 Author Posted August 22, 2012 more i throw it seems liek its getting a lil bit closer but still just swimming straight. am i supposed to be reeling while im doign this or what? Quote
Skeet22 Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Yes you have to reel up the excess slack slowly but not so fast that you take all the slack out of the line. Quote
bigt89 Posted August 23, 2012 Author Posted August 23, 2012 still cant get it to walk starting to get on my nerves literally feels liek you needs a 3 or 4 foot pole the tip keeps hittign th ewater and all it does is move the slack in line dont make the frog move at all Quote
craww Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 This might sound strange, but I picked this up somewhere years ago and it works...Trim one leg 1/2-3/4" or so shorter than the other. I was having the same issue, it would walk outta the package but the nose just wanted to come up too much. Again I cant tell you why, but Ive done this with a half dozen spros and it works. Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Timing is everything. Once you get it to make its first turn, then you have to time it out just right to where you work the slack line right before you the frog comes to a stop. Once the frog comes to a stop, then you have to work to get it to start walking again. Once you figure it out, it becomes second nature, but you have to have the right cadence. Quote
bigt89 Posted August 23, 2012 Author Posted August 23, 2012 i hope i get this down sometime soon i even read an artical saying you should take half of th elegs on each side and just cut them off. Quote
Bassego Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 I had a terrible time trying to walk the frog with my spro frog too. I ended up throwing my heddon spook jr. until i got the motion down for walking the dog. This will help you get the rhythm down and imo this is the hardest part. Hope this helps. Quote
Bair Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 The stroke for the frog is shorter than that for a spook and quicker. Be sure there is slack line too. 1 Quote
Bass Dude Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 The stroke for the frog is shorter than that for a spook and quicker. Be sure there is slack line too. X2---the most important thing is to keep the slack in the line. Use quick pops of your rod tip and get it to the point where when you pop your rod your just tightening up the slack and pulling the bait slightly. It's hard to explain, but I hope this helps. Also....trim the legs. Go on the Spro website, they have videos of Rojas giving tips on fishing it. Quote

Thats it The key for me is once the cadence starts don't stop. Keep it going with slack in your line. Keep doing it, you'll get it. Mike Quote
bigt89 Posted August 25, 2012 Author Posted August 25, 2012 ill try to trim so more tomorrow. its still hard all it wants to do is go straight even with 1" trimmed off. i get it to swim to the side once ot twice on a hard fast jerk then it stops. im goign to assume this i sluck but i have had 2 or 3 bass jump on the frog got 1 in the other 2 i missed. not sure how long you have to wait until you set hook. was told by one person locally count to 5 then set it and read soem were else set hook as soon as you feel the weight but missed em both. i had my dad grab me a green rain forest or what ever that rainforest color is while he was at cabelas Quote

Another suggestion, try a Booyah Pad Crasher till you have the motion down. They are cheaper and you won't have to give up as much money learning to fish a frog. Quote
bigt89 Posted August 26, 2012 Author Posted August 26, 2012 GETTing it now. must be wrong color i had soem bass jumping out of water while it was working but non went for it. starteddoing quick short fast gently snaps and reel slowly and what do you know it starts walking im sure ill get real good at it adn get timing down i cant get it to walk the whole retrieve yet or as good as i seen others do it but getting some were now. picked up a rainforest spro so give this a try tomorrow this one seems differnet though the legs feel softer adn not as many strains as my other one Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted August 26, 2012 Super User Posted August 26, 2012 Little short twitches with slack in the line work better with me. With braid it's easy to overwork the bait and take up all the slack.Try very subtle twitches. Quote
bigt89 Posted August 26, 2012 Author Posted August 26, 2012 mayhave to trim new one cant get it to walk as easy as yesterday on old one Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted August 26, 2012 Super User Posted August 26, 2012 I wouldn't get worked up if you cannot walk a frog proficiently. I don't and I have caught close to two hundred bass in the last two yrs exclusively on frogs. I am not bringing up the number caught to show off but simply demonstrate that bass can be caught without necessarily "walking it". Quote
bigt89 Posted August 29, 2012 Author Posted August 29, 2012 how you fishing the frog if its not walk the dog? got it down with my new one walkign th edog but does not seem nearly as good as people say it is bass apprently blow up on it the 3rd-4th side dance, and i know the bass are they. seems they rather have a senko then a frog making me feel like i waisted $150 on a pole and $225 on a reel Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted August 29, 2012 Super User Posted August 29, 2012 Frogs can be used a few ways. I just do very subtle twitches and series of pops every now and then. Like I mentioned in my last post. I am not that consistent in walking a frog so I use the technique that works for me. You spent good money on the hardware, keep at it. Quote
Chris W Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 The spro's are harder to walk than some of the other frogs it seems like to me. I put a great big split ring on my spro frogs and they are much easier to walk. Spro actually makes some just for the frog. Braid makes it easier also. Quote

fishking247 Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 i prefer snag proof bobby's perfect frog. bigger hooks which increase my hookup percentage. the spro frogs tend to have smaller hooks IMO...the snagproof also walks the dog real well Quote
