Been searching for a bigger truck for a bit, wife and I wanted to go from 3 to 2 vehicles so traded in my trusty Nissan Frontier and her aging Saab for this beast, that Ecoboost engine is the real deal! Going to put a cold air intake, catback exhaust, and possibly chip it to make it a sleeper :sleep-038: ,

Problem is she is liking it more then our 2nd vehicle!

Sell a few reel handles and you get new vehicles I am in the wrong business... haha looks good

Eco boost =6 cylinder? No offense but a new muffler and and an intake system will not make it any faster. I hate 6 cylinder vehicles with flowmasters, sounds ridiculous IMO. Also, if you start messing with the trucks air flow system, it might hurt you in mpg. Very nice truck though,I love it. Congratulations!

Sweet truck!!! I sell used auto parts and I will give you one piece of advice for a truck like that.... KEEP THE TAILGATE LOCKED!!! THEY ARE VERY EXPENSIVE AND EASILY STOLEN!!!!!!

Are you familiar with the 3.5L twin turbo charged platform? Its not even close to the base V-6, take at look around the internet regarding the engine. Its a beast, beating out all but Ford's 6.2L, performance wise. Here is an article for you:

http://www.thedetroi...-with-ecoboost/

No offense, but have you actually seen dyno results from said additions? My buddy runs a speed shop here locally and the gains are about 60-75 WHP and up to 90 WTQ with all three and less with just one, I agree the CAI performance gains are debatable, but the cat back exhaust and custom tune will in my opinion and that of others that have worked on the engine seem to not only improve speed, but towing and fuel economy.

Hearthrob Exhaust, for ecoboost. Here take a listen, turn the speakers and bass up and tell me what you think, does that six cylinder sound ridiculous as you stated?

:eyebrows:

Thanks for the compliment on truck, though :wink2: !

I woulda kept the frontier........I'm a Nissan guy after all they did pick off half my college tab and hire me sight unseen right outa tech school. I do like the truck though very sharp nothing looks better on vehicles paint wise then black. I think it needs a Hawgtech sticker on the back though maybe on the center sliding window. Very nice truck indeed

Nice truck!. Regarding the tuning mods and exhaust, do they affect the engine/turbo warranty?

I have a 05 Super Crew with the 5.4L and I asked the dealership about adding a chip right after I purchased it in 05..they said if you want to continue the engine warranty, don't do it.

Nice exhaust note for a 6 banger, but I like the turbo whine better.

Ford>Nissan

Take the chip out if you take it to the dealership or just get good with the tech's its 7 years old now I's the warranty even still good if not chip it up but the 5.4 is known for blowing spark plug threads and killing a cylinder especially with towing. After I left Nissan I worked for a large local shop and the guy was a ford guru so we got a lot of fords in and I put in countless helicoils into heads because it would literly blow the spark plug and threads right out. But when I worked for Nissan We had several chipped and heavily modded 350z's and G35's come in for work and we just looked the other way usually plus we got to test drive these cars and some trucks.

On the turbo note nothing beats the sound of blow of valves I'v had several turbo cars a few super charged and the turbos sound the sickest I used to go under over passes in my 300Z and rev the tick out of it just to spool it up and slam the throttle shut to open them valves and hear the VVVVVVPSSSTSSSSST echo of the blow off valve. The only thing i think that compared was when I put timing gears in my 383 that sounded neat.

Sweet Truck - Love the sound of the "after Installation" exhaust.

Chips are cool - and I think every dealership will tell you that they void the warranty.

Just take the tune off prior to your visit (takes 2 minutes) and then put it back afterwords.

I've chipped 2 new trucks and a GTO and I'm a fan.

Your speed shop buddy might try to talk you into a few more "Upgrades" which would also be nice.

Congrats ~

Take a look at Edge Systems...worked marvels on my GMC. I believe they have hacks for the Ford. You can also tell them what upgrades you've done, and they'll send you a custom program.

To those saying just take the chip out newer vehicles are getting smarter, Be careful as some company's now have the computer set to change a value if the ecu is modified and you cannot change it back. The exhaust and intake can void it but the dealer must prove the issue was a direct cause of that (magnussen vs. Morrison) the eco boost stuff is pretty cool and people need to give it some time it will advance more.. I am sure the shop you are working with will know about this stuff tho.

Why take the chip out? It's probably a futile effort anyway. The systems in most new vehicles record the history of how the truck was driven and any adjustments or changes that have been made to the factory settings.

Yea..the spark plugs. That motor runs great but that is a serious issue. From what I have read on the Ford boards, if you dont remove them every 20K miles and coat the threads, they will get stuck because the electrode carbonizes beneath the thread making it impossible to remove without breaking them. The dealership or mechanic can supposedly remove them with a special tool if the plug breaks(probably an easy out), but there are no guarantees that the plug hole may get stripped requiring a helicoil, or head replacement.

I got 117K on the plugs, and she runs good, so I will just cross my fingers. Once I address it, it is going to be painful ;)

All of that said, I am a ford guy and I love my truck.

Sorry if I misled some of you its not actually a physical chip as it use to be done, its a reprogram of the ECU done via the diagnostic port.

As far as warranty goes, yes a modified ECU program or physical chip will VOID THE WARRANTY, as a safe guard the software mapping programs tuners usually use capture the ECU stock program and saves it prior to modifying program for different variables or you can purchase another stock/factory ECU if using a chipped one, but with the mapping software it is a thing of the past.

I have had all my vehicles since the early 90s (Superchared T-Bird, Jetta 1.8 T, Nissan Frontier 4.0L and now the Ecoboost) modified via chip or ECU reprogramming and never experienced a problem with the factory warranty not being honored. I am willing to pay the price of a voided warranty though for the extra enjoyment of tweaking, but that is just me.

Thanks all for the compliments!

Dwight when are we going to race, you know there is a motor sports park right on the Beeline when you get down :eyebrows:

I am a big fan of turbos. Europe has been using them since the 50's. It finally good to hear American car company are finely catching up.

Any way I do not know munch about chips. But it is proven with a cold air intake and a exhaust. That you will get better mpgs. To put it this way. Its like breathing through a straw. Then taking a pipe and breathing through it. The fuel will burn better and with a bigger exhaust. The engine will have to work less to push the back pressure out. Most cold air intakes and exhaust combos. You could see any were from 15-20 extra hp.

Then 3-5 mpgs.

Also you might want to buy some better plugs, and some thicker plug cables. I know with my turbo car. People are getting better mpgs with the plugs slightly over gaped.

One last thing. Let the turbo cool down. Granted you might no pound on it like I do my car. After a hard run leave the car running for a minute or two. Other wise you will have oil grim build up and it will kill your turbo. Also make sure you get a oil catch can. It will not catch every thing. But turbos are horrible at spitting out oil. Its the nature of them. So it will leave a stain on you driveway.

Somehow didnt see you write about having it tuned. That will definitely make a difference IF DONE PROPERLY. My brother in laws truck is jacked up because he had it done cheap. They chipped it and didnt tune it correctly and he hates it.

Thanks for the info about the engine. I guess i should read up before making a blind statement. I had no idea Ford put that much into it.

As for the video, it sounds nice. But still has the v6 sound. I just prfer the deep, loud, vibrating exhaust of a v8.

Not taking anything away from your truck though, just a difference in opinions. I would buy that ford in a heartbeat though. I have been interested in Fords for the past year or so and have been wanting one. Although my entire family would dis own me, I think I might pull the trigger on one when im ready for a new truck.

Turbo timers are your best friend beat on her drive her normal it doesnt matter just get out the car and let the timer do its thing it will kill the engine when the turbo's/oil temps are in spec or turn off at a set time. I had HKS timers on all my turbo cars(300z,240sx, Talon TSi)

I forgot about a turbo timer. I just haven't bought one yet. Since I usally just sit in the car for a minute with the engine running.

Any way they are cheap insurance. They run about 100 bucks. No need to buy one for more then that. Greedy and like clayton said HKS. Make ones that work great.

IMO opinion a minute isn't long enough mine were all set at like 5 minutes minimum but I drove it like I stole it even if i was going a mile down the road to pick up milk from the store sooooooo lol

The Ecoboost turbos are water cooled.

You really don't need to have a cool down period.

I Just thought of it or it just clicked but Europe and most everywhere else isn't just using turbos but they are using turbo diesels in EVERYTHING they have figured out a long time ago that diesel is much better for the environment and you get better fuel mileage a ton better. The new diesels put out cleaner air then they suck in the engine purifies the air pretty much. It hasn't always been this way but in recent years they have been doing this I went to a Cummins workshop for the ISX engine they put in rigs and during the classes they had one running in the room no ventilation for hours that's how clean it was. However American company's still haven't caught on your best bet is to buy German here in america if you want the European technology

How is that dumb?

When you shut the truck off, coolant is still being pumped to the turbos.

Um what? Are they on an EWP?

They use something called siphoning.

Not exactly sure how they do it, but there is no electric water pump.
