Doubled Over Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Looking for a new crank rod and was wondering what everyones favorite one is. Going to want to throw everything from shallow to deep diving crankbaits. Not a brand specific type of guy, i'm open to everything, although I do prefer a rod that is 7' or over. Thanks for your time. -DO Quote
shootermcbob Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I have a 7'4" St. Croix mojo bass "crankster" cranking rod. It is rated for 1/4 to 3/4 oz lures and 8-14 lb line. I have thrown red eye shads and cranks including strike king series 5 and rapala DT14 with it. I have also thrown strike king 1.5 and 2.5 sized squarebills with it. Rod handles all with no issues, is sensitive, and has good enough backbone to land a 7-8 lb carp I accidentally snagged. At 120.00 bucks I think it is a very good rod. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted August 20, 2012 Super User Posted August 20, 2012 I have owned BPS Crankin Sticks, Shimano Convergence cranking rod, and St Croix Mojo Bass crankster (which was a total turd). Of all of these that I have actual hands on experience with it would be the new crankin stick from BPS you can get them on sale for around 50bucks, then the Convergence and I wouldn't hit a dead dog in the butt with a Mojo. Do not buy the telescopic handle version of the Crankin Stick, fine for topwater but not very sensitive. I really like the Convergence for the price. I would rate the Convergence and Crankin stick close with the nod toward the newest version of the Crankin Stick, very very close second would be the Convergence. Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted August 21, 2012 Super User Posted August 21, 2012 ~ Lamiglas Certified Pro Fiberglass Rod 7'6", 5-Power, Fast, 1-Piece - SR765R ~ Love the Striking Honey Colored Blank. A-Jay Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 X2 on the SR765R Lamiglas. This blank has a mod action to keep them hooked up, enough backbone to horse them out of cover if necessary and even though it's glass it's sensitive enough to feel the bait wobble and make contact. A-Jay Just out of curiosity how much does the rod cost?? May be replacing one of mine and have more funds available than I did when I got the other ones. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 21, 2012 Super User Posted August 21, 2012 Well, I like the SR705R, but it is very "technique specific", For big, deep running lures like the DD22, it's THE BOMB! 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 21, 2012 Super User Posted August 21, 2012 retiedbosn, it is a $200 rod. Best I could find with a quick search was $183, but don't know if that included shipping. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted August 21, 2012 Super User Posted August 21, 2012 I have a Bud Erhardt crank bait rod I acquired in 89, 90,91? . . . I'm not quite sure now when I got it. 7', graphite/class composite, the old school round wrap guides. Bud Erhardt is the guy who, when Eagle Claw took all of their rod making business overseas, this guy bought all of the mandrels from Eagle Claw (for pennies on the dollar) and proceeded to teach himself how to make fishing rods, as a retirement hobby. Then he would go to different sport shows and sell what he made. This guy was ahead of his time because this rod compares favorably with any current cranking rod on the market. It has a fairly long handle on it so that 2 handed casting is relatively easy. I've used it for every kind of cranking you can imagine, mostly for throwing rattle baits. All the writing on this rod has long since worn off and the cork is looking ancient. At some point i'll have this rod refurbished, assuming I don't break it first. I got this rod at the KC Sport Show. I remember he had several of them. If I could go back in time I'd go back and buy all of them. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted August 21, 2012 Super User Posted August 21, 2012 Just out of curiosity how much does the rod cost?? May be replacing one of mine and have more funds available than I did when I got the other ones. You can get both the 705 & the 765 on Amazon.com I just picked up another 705 myself. Also, if you haven't thrown an all Glass rod in a while, you might want to find one to test drive first. They are not for everyone. A-Jay Quote

mikeeasttn Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 I do not understand but I have custom built, Crucial. Loomis, and Dobyns cranking rods. But the one that plays the fish best for me is a Berkley Lightning Rod MH 7'. I know it sounds crazy but it sems to play the fish better when using shallow and medium running cranks. Quote
jj'sbassinforfun Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Pretty darn impressed with my 7' Powell Diesel! Got my eye on a 7' 9" Phenix Glass Crankbait for deep cranks! Hoping to hear reviews from some other members? Quote
FourCorners Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I'm a big fan of the St. Croix avid crankbait rods, particularly the medium moderate. Some guys say it's too limp but I feel much more confident in keeping fish buttoned compared to some of the faster action graphite rods. Quote
Silas Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 At present, I'm enjoying my Falcon Lowrider: 7ft, Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted August 25, 2012 Super User Posted August 25, 2012 Dobyns 705cb glass. Light and sensitive for a cranking rod. Quote
