MEADOWS Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 So I plan on getting a new jig setup. I think I am going with the Dobyns Savy 7'3" heavy action rod but I don't mind hearing possible better options. If you like a rod better in that range let me know! But my real question is what line to go with. I don't have multiple setups available so I need a rod that can cover the whole spectrum in one setup. I have been going back in forth whether to get heavy fluorocarbon (17-25) or braid. I plan on swimming jigs, flipping jigs in heavy cover and using football jigs, stroking and hopping them. What do you guys think is the best fit for this setup? I have seen opinions from both sides.Does the braid perform well when stroking and swimming a jig? I could tie on a leader if need be as well. P.s. I also have a medium heavy 7' veritas with 15# fluorocarbon tied on. It crossed my mind that I could use some of the lighter jigging on that rod and heavier stuff on the 7'3". Let me know what you guys think! Quote
11justin22 Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Flouro for me. I switched to it awhile back and will never look back. I fish around a lot of timber and rock. I have heard that rock will cut braid especially the knot so be aware. Also most of the jig fisherman I fish with(I'm in a bass club) fish with flouro. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted August 21, 2012 Super User Posted August 21, 2012 Go with 20lb flouro, after trying a few different ones abrasx has been performing great for me. I also have the Savvy 724c paired with a revo stx 7.1.....works great Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted August 21, 2012 Super User Posted August 21, 2012 If you stick with the 15# fc you can finesse a jig more imho... I'd also think about a 7'6'' rod if you already have a 7' I've tried 25# fc and it is best for jigs over 1/2oz DISCLAIMER= results may vary varry Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Looking over my rods I actually have 4 setups I can use for jig fishing: 1. 7' MH/F Field & Stream Tec Spec eTub & Jig spinning rod paired with a Quantum Kinetic PTi-B20 with 15# Braid for lighter jigs and t-rigs. This combo sees alot of water time. 2. 6'6" H/F Cabelas XMLC Rig & Jig 3/8-2 oz paired with a Quantum Accurist 501PT with 30# power pro. The rod is about 2 yrs old and was mislabled as MH when I ordered it but has worked out well. 3. 7'6" MH/EF Field & Stream Tec Spec Telescopic Flipping and Pitching rod paired with a Daiwa Exceler 7.X.1 reel with 15# Cabelas XPS.50 Flouro 4. 7'11" H/EF Quantum Superlte PT 1/2-2 oz. Telescopic Flipping and Pitching rod paired with a Quantum Accurist HPT 7.0:1 reel with 50# power pro. This rod is a beast and don't think it will have any trouble handling anything I run into while I'm out. All my combos are less than $150 or and planning to possibly add a 7'3" MH rod in the future but right now these handle everything with combo #2 & 4 seeing the least amount of water time so far. Super User roadwarrior Posted August 21, 2012 Super User Posted August 21, 2012 On my main jig rig I'm using 50 lb Sufix 832. Braided line has significantly improved my jig fishing. However, I use a different set-up for swimming jigs. On that rig I'm fishing #12 Yo-Zuri Hybrid. Quote
MEADOWS Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 Thanks for the input so far. Do you guys think I should go with a 7' 6" jig/flip rod instead of the 7'3"? I would like to keep hearing what you guys think. I could run heavier setups on the braid or 20# fluorocarbon and use lighter jigs and swimming jigs on the 7' mh setup Roadwarrior- Do you really like braid with jigs? Can you still stroke a jig as good or is that effected by the braid? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 21, 2012 Super User Posted August 21, 2012 Well, I have a lot of issues with braid, but the sensitivity is unbeatable on a tight line. I have Sufix 50 on the rig I use for weighted plastics, too. A third set-up is my Alabama Rig, 80 lb Sufix. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted August 21, 2012 Super User Posted August 21, 2012 I run straight braid on my Jig set up I have one set up out of my 4 I always have with me that's dedicated to jigs and jigs only. It's a 7'6" MHF Veritas with a Revo SX spooled with 50# power pro. This set up is in my hands 90% of the time that I'm fishing. I tried straight flouro I didn't like it mainly because of what FC i was using but that's besides the point I now use straight 50# power pro no leader not even when I fish around rocks in gin clear water or thick wood cover. I check my line VERY frequently though rarely do I need to retie but the rocks I fish around arnt really sharp or jagged and when I get a fish I horse em right in so not to get into the nasty stuff. Me personally I like the 7'6" I can flip and pitch pretty far with it as opposed to my 7' and 6'6" rods plus I like having the extra rod length for picking up slack on quick hook sets when the jig is taken on the fall. It is a bit much for light finesse jigs but I make due I may switch to a 7' MHF for my finesse jigs. Braid the main reason I like it is because of sensitivity for one when I'm working the bait on the bottom or in cover I feel much much more but I can see it better then I can see flouro I'v caught more fish seeing my braid start to move when the jigs falling to the left or right instead of down. I had a hard time picking up flouro the braid to me stands out easier for line watching. Quote
Super User deep Posted August 21, 2012 Super User Posted August 21, 2012 I'm using a Powell Max 753 (the Jared Lintner football jig rod) with a Citica 201d 7.0:1 spooled with 55 lb Samurai braid and leader. I mostly drag jigs in deep water, and pitch in shallower water occasionally. I've only fished jigs upto 3/4 oz on this, rod is rated for 1/4 to 1 oz jigs. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted August 21, 2012 Super User Posted August 21, 2012 My 3 rods I fish jigs on are: St croix Avid 70mh/f with Core 50 spooled with 15lb Invisx St Croix Avid 70 h/f with Curado e7 spooled with 40lb Daiwa Samurai braid G loomis BCR854 GLX with Chronarch e7 spooled with 15 lb invisx I like the flouro much better. The only reason the braid is still on the one reel is I used it for frogging and light a-rig as well. I have decided against the a-rig anymore, and dont do much frogging, so it might be changed out soon to more flouro. I was on a huge braid kick with my jigs for a while, until I did a test with braid vs copoly vs flouro one day at the lake, and the flouro outcaught both others, same lure and presentation. Might just be in my head, but I'm convinced! Jeff Quote
