GoneFishi'n Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 It was an late afternoon day, sunny and beautiful. Took out a frog and I knew for sure this would be the day I would catch a fish on a frog! There were weeds all over the place. Wide open for casting it far as I could. I tried to remember how to "Walk the Frog". So I did my best and twitched, reel, twitch, reel, and so on. I heard bass jumpping, and most of the time I would see them too. The whole time I was casting at the banks getting nothing. Then I learned that all the bass were out in the middle/towards the bank. I saw a bass jump out of the water, as soon as I saw it I reeled in as fast as I could and caster about 3 feet in front of where it jumped. And I was so hesitant as about what was going to happen, looking at my frog the hole time. Then all of a sudden I was something swimming towards it, i got so anxious wondering if it was going to hit the frog. I kept on thinking in my mind was it wait 1 second or 3 seconds before I set the hook if the bass were to hit my frog. Then BAM!!!! I was so confused about to set the hook as soon as it hit. So I just set the hook when I saw the line jump up and start moving which was like 2 seconds. I was so happy as I was reeling it in. So I got it in and I took all the weeds off of it and the worst thing that could ever happen. I picked it up to get a picture and BOOM! It started to jump all over the place. It was going towards the water so I kinda ran after it and almost fell in. Hell, if it was in the water sitting there I would have jumped in with it. I finally collected my thoughts and thought to myself, man that was my first frog fish of probably many. So all in all it was an amazing time today.PS(Well kind of another story): I didn't check my not after catching that fish, and when I slung that frog as hard as I could the d**n thing flew almost 180 feet haha. So what I did at first was tell myself I was an idiot lol. But then I saw these guys that were in a john boat that I see every night I am here(which is every weekend), and I went through this like forest of weeds and bushes that wasn't that long but man did those briers hurt to ask these guys if they could maybe get it for me. So I asked them very politley and saying sorry for asking you for this and it would really help me out alot if you could please get my frog for me. One of the guys said yeah sure and asked me what color it was and I told him, then I heard his friend say something very mumbled. Then I sat there for like 5 minutes looking at them wondering if they were messing with me or just being as**oles and not helping me out. So what I did was I said never mind I will get it. So I had to walk all the way to my dads house which was about a maybe 3/4 of a mile and told my dad and step mom what happend. So I went to the garage got my inflatable raft and went down there. They were still there and as I put it in the water and as soon as they saw me they turned around and went to the bank over on the other side. So I got the frog and as I was going back I yelled "Hey thank you guys for your help!"(like my mom says, beat them with kindness). And as soon as I was leaving they sarted to come back to the bank. I mean I really don't know what there problem was, I mean the frog was like 40-50 feet behind them. I don't know if what I asked was wrong or anything but to me they were just rude. Well I just thought I could share my thoughts in my mind with you guys, have a good night. Quote
MT2 Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Very cool, kinda sounds like one guy wanted to help the other guy was being a .................... But you have those kind of things happen. IMO the best thing is to shake it off and dont sweat it, let it stick with you to long and you could be the one in the boat getting asked for help. And suddenly you'll recall this and think I didnt get no help, dont want to be that guy. I still rember my first frog fish as well. It was about 3 years ago, early spring shortly after the ice out. A buddy and I was on our 3rd pond of the day and had caught 1 dink and a big bull frog. I tied one on just to work on walking the dog figured nothing is biting so lets take this time to practice something I cant do. Im standing there working this frog talking (screaming) across the pond at my buddy, we are debating on leaving when all of a sudden I hear SPLOOSH!, and my rod is almost jerked out of my hands. When I set the hook, I instantly yell back across the pond....Get your..........over here!!! Im using a Tommy Biffle sig series rod, a broomstick if you will, and this fish is freakin me out thinking Im going to snap my new rod. Get ole gal to the bank and stick her on the scale....5-12, 2nd biggest fish of my life! To say I was hooked on frogs was a understatement. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted August 19, 2012 Super User Posted August 19, 2012 I watch all the videos read all the reports but am still a big goose egg on frogs. As for d-bags on the water........karma will catch up and I am willing to bet they don't have the afflack duck to plug holes in their boat when it starts taking on water. Quote
BASSHUNTER1961 Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Congrats on your first (Frog Fish)... There is nothing more exciting in bass fishing than watching a bass slam a frog. Quote

One thing that seems to help me and has helped others is instead of watching your frog scan around for your next cast. This does 2 things.... 1. Delays your reaction, you will hear the sploosh and not see it helps prevent setting the hook to early. 2. Seems to me 9 times out of 10 if you really arnt paying attention thats when something will happen. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted August 19, 2012 Super User Posted August 19, 2012 Congrats on your first frog catch, awesome isn't it? As far as those guys are concerned it's a real shame that one angler cannot help out another fellow angler. What goes around comes around. Quote
unionman Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Imo Frogs (topwater) are the most exciting way to bass fish. I just love that loud "baratone pop" that a big bass' mouth makes when he inhales your frog. I swear I can usually judge how big the bass is, without seeing it, just by the sound his/her mouth makes when hitting a topwater lure. I also love when they completely jump out of the water and you get to see their whole body flying through the air...even if my frog isnt in his mouth. I will frog fish until my old frail bones are too weak to horse one in with 10#'s of weeds covering the fish. :-) Quote
GoneFishi'n Posted August 19, 2012 Author Posted August 19, 2012 Thanks guy's! Yeah I think I may be come a frog addict haha. I went out to bass pro which is like 10 minutes away from me and got a booyah frog instead of a live target like last time because this way I don't feel as bad if I loose it but still will be PO lol. Went out today to this reservoir called Crystal Lake and I mean this lake is beautiful. Only electric motors and this thing is almost more then a mile long. Has trees coming straight out of the water and downed trees on some of the shorlines. Were going to take the boat next time. Good thing is that there is almost no one that fishes there except for the locals. Oh and I caught nothing but my dad caught a nice 3 pounder across the lake while I was looking at him. Have a good day everyone. Quote
