mattk22 Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 I recently bought a Abu Garcia Veritas Rod. It is 6'9" med/heavy and i just have no feel with it. This is my first casting setup and it is paired with a Garcia Revo SX. I am mostly cranking with this setup. Do I have to stiff of a rod? Is it just this rod? I was thinking of trying a Lews Speedstick in med. any opinions or thoughts would be appreciated. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted August 18, 2012 Super User Posted August 18, 2012 This is my first casting setup Have some patience... the difference in how you hold a bait casting rod vs. a spinning rod requires a few different hand muscles and will take you a short while to develop a "feel" with the new tackle. oe Quote
Arv Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 While this is a great rod, I think that its probably not the ideal rod for cranking. The MH veritas is stiff compared a lot of other MH rod, plus the XF action. A lot of people, including me, prefer a softer rod for treble hooks. I have the same rod and use it mostly for jigs and t rigs and spinners. I might throw lipless cranks on it occasionally but thats it as far as cranks go. With that said, I agree with Okoboji. Your first casting set up will feel different and will take a little time to get used to. Just have patience and get comfortable with it because a baitcaster is a great tool to have in your arsenal. zachb34 Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 you will be better off with winch series for crankbaits but that wont help with feel what kind of line are you using? If you still cant get the feel with it after getting used to it, then try a flourocarbon line. Quote
mattk22 Posted August 18, 2012 Author Posted August 18, 2012 I am using Floro, it just don't "feel" the bottom or structure very well. Maybe it is just a feel thing that I will get used too. This isn't my ideal crank rod, that is what I was wondering if another rod would help my feel, but it doesn't sound like it will, it will just give me better ability on hook sets and casting correct? Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Are you new to crankbaits as well? Is there any chance you aren't contacting the bottom structure to feel it? Quote
kylek Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I have the exact same rod paired up with a lew's reel and I can't crank with it. It is a little to stiff in my opinion. I would go for the 7' M version or the winch series for cranking. By the way... this is going to be my next purchase too!!!! Quote
Capt.Bob Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 with that rod hitting bottom shouldn't matter, it would have better feel than a crankbait rod. My MHXF or MXF are very sensitive compared to my moderate action rods, and I can feel the action of the lure very well with them. I would get the Moderate action and as DVC implied, you should feel bottom or when contacting structure even with the less sensative Moderate action. The XF most don't care for because they have no forgiveness and it is very easy to rip hooks out, the Moderate action rod's are what MOST preffer for treble hooks. Quote
mattk22 Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 It is my first real foray into cranking. I have done some, but is was with a spinning pole with a lot softer action. I just ordered a Lews Tornament and a 7' Veritas Winch. I needed another pole rigged up so I wasn't swolitching baits all the time so it was a good excuse for a cranking setup. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted August 20, 2012 Super User Posted August 20, 2012 Do you have any problem feeling the bottom using that rod fishing a different technique? If you bought the rod off of a shelf where it was handled a lot there is a chance there is a crack in it which will destroy the feel. I had a similar experience with a rod once, it was supposed to be very sensitive and it was dead, turned out the blank was cracked right before the reel seat but under the hood of it, couldn't see it. Took the rod back the guy at the store agreed something was wrong, he either found the crack or was told about it as he is the one who told me about it the next time I was at the store. The new rod was identical to the old with the exception that it was very sensitive. When I switched to a b/c setup it was like someone turned a switch on, I could tell what the bottom was at least hard, soft or grass on my first outing. If the rod has no sensitivity using cranks or spinnerbaits and doesn't have any when t-rig, etc then my money would be on a bad blank. Quote
