Super User roadwarrior Posted August 18, 2012 Super User Posted August 18, 2012 I had the opportunity to fish the prototype a few months ago. I fished it weightless and lightly weighted so that all the action was generated by the tail on top of the water. The rigging was with a 3/0 Gamakatsu Offset Worm Hook, tail positioned horizontal. The presentation is similar to a small buzzbait or Rage Shad. I didn't catch any monsters, but the numbers were awesome! Today I fished a 1/4 oz weighted Moaner Stroker Hook with the Menace tail vertical. The presentation is a minnow. I prefer baitcasting gear for fast retrieve lures, so I spooled my Curado 50E with Yo-Zuri Hybrid #6 matched to a BCR893. I wanted to test the rig today in anticipation of using this next month on the river. I think the Menace is going to be killer for smallmouth! http://www.ragetail.com/news/most-recent-news/ http://www.moanerhooks.com/the-stroker-hook/ 1 Quote
Jake P Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 I recently fished it trailing a 1/2 oz NorthStar flip and swim....results were dynamite. This is easily one of my top 3 trailers now. I have yet to fish it naked since the jig combo has been so hot but I will give it a shot tomorrow morning. Another KO by rage tail!!!! Big O you are the MAN! 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 19, 2012 Author Super User Posted August 19, 2012 Yep, looks to be a great option for swimming jigs. Quote
bassh8er Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Got a chance to try the Menace; good action. Quote
TNBassin' Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 From what I've seen, the rage tail baits are incredible. I saw a video on the smokin roosters, and made a bee line to bass pro to pick up a few packs. Can't wait to try the menace. Quote
Jake P Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Got a chance to try the Menace; good action but tore up every time I got a bite. Disposable bait, try Zoom. Maybe your rigging them wrong? I consistently get 3-5 fish on each. I just ordered 5 packs from TW along with some other stuff. Quote
Big-O Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Got a chance to try the Menace; good action but tore up every time I got a bite. Disposable bait, try Zoom. Sorry and that surprises me too, because I can regularly punch with the Menace through thick grass and cover and land as many as 4 or 5 fish before it's torn too bad, then I use it as a jig trailer. Rarely if ever lose the tails on it unless I bring a hot fish to the surface immediately where they can sling the bait when they thrash beside or in the boat. Were the baits new ones or protos from someone else? Several people from two roadtrips ago got them to ck out. And what color... I'm interested because it's the first time I've heard this and all of our SK Pros have been fishing them for a long time and like their durability... Thanks for your comment and you can pm me if you like! Quote
RyneB Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I fished it today as a trailer on a 1/4 oz white swim jig. Menace color was pearl. By far the best swim jig trailer i have ever used. My favorite thing was the way it planed on the vegetation. I actually came on to start a new thread and saw this one. I want to give a big thanks to Big-O and strike king. Another great Rage product. The action is perfect for a swim jig. I didnt like the bulk of a rage craw for a swim jig, but the Menace is a perfect fit. 1 Quote

Not as fast action, but I did catch 4 on the same bait. The original post was actually poking a little fun at RW, so sorry for the confusion. I know the Strike King Rage products are good quality baits and I have many of them, but I also have other brands. Thanks again Big-O. 1 Quote

TNBassin' Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Not trying to hijack this thread, but what size hook and weight would I need to rage rig a rooster?? Quote
Big-O Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Not trying to hijack this thread, but what size hook and weight would I need to rage rig a rooster?? I use a 1/4oz 4 to 5/0 Moaner Weighted stroker hook. For Rage Rigging in depths to 10ft or so, I'll use 3/8. Quote
TNBassin' Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Thank you sir. BPS didn't have the 5/O 1/4 oz so I got the 4/O instead. Hopefully they work just as well. I cannot wait to try my roosters out today. It's been a slow month on the lake, and I'm hoping that the roosters wake the fish up for me tonight. Got them in Bama Bug, black blue fleck, and Okeechobee craw. 1 Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted August 22, 2012 Super User Posted August 22, 2012 Big-O I inherited some of the Proto's from someone and am I wrong in seeing some subtle differences in the tail junction? I think the release version has a better...well...wiggle than the prototypes. I've been using them, almost exclusively, as a jig trailer and had very good luck. A couple weeks ago, I was swimming them on a 3/16 ball head on the river and the brownfish couldn't leave them alone. I've done well on both models, but definitely have caught more on the release. I'm sure that the proto plastic from back then was not the same as what we final decision for production... All RageTails are sampled in several different plastic recipes to find which is going to work the very best and even then we may tweak it later if necessary. Glad you're having a great time with them Quote
