bassmaster8100 Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 Been upgrading rods and reels this year. Upgraded a couple of baitcasters now wanna upgrade some spinning reels. Can anyone suggest a good quality spinning reel? I'll pretty much be using it for soft plastic techniques Shakey head, Carolina rig, drop shot etc. Quote
fishking247 Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 shimano stradic if you can afford it. if not a shimano symetre Quote

TNBassin' Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 I have been using, and have been blown away by how awesome the Okuma Trio 30 is. It has 10 ball bearings, and amazing drag system, and is incredibly lightweight. I paired it with an Okuma Tarvos rod, and it's amazingly well balanced. The Trio can be had for around $50 and the rod I got was around $32. Shimano makes good, cheap spinning reals, but for a 10 ball bearing reel with a great drag, thick durable bail wire, you can't go wrong with the Trio. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 17, 2012 Super User Posted August 17, 2012 It really doesn't make a whole of difference, just about any reel over $50 is going to perform well. Suggestions usually boil down to personal favorites, mine for freshwater are Pflueger supremes. My supremes are about 3 years old, light, smooth, never been serviced or needed repair, my 35 has caught a number of fish 10-20#. Presidents get very good reviews, never had one but I wouldn't be a afraid to buy one. If I had plans of using the reel for double duty, meaning some sw fishing too, I'd step it up a bit. Which ever way you go, I'd take my rod with me and see what reel feels best on it. Quote
mod479 Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 Not sure what your budget is, but you mention upgrading your gear...so I'll assume you aren't looking for cheap stuff. +1 on the Okuma Trio, solid reel for the money. Mine is still holding up after 2 years of use, I let my friends use it, and if they cant kill it, neither will you. Kinda heavy though. But that's all relative. Seeing I own 3 of them, I'd reccomend the Stradic FJ or Ci4 if you feel like truly upgrading. I've had a lot of spinning reels in my 20+ years of fishing experience, cheap/expensive ones, quality and absolute garbage....I can say you will not be dissapointed in either of those reels. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted August 17, 2012 Super User Posted August 17, 2012 Another Shimano vote here. Stradic, Saros, Symetre, etc. All good quality. I like Shimano quality, have owned other brands, just like Shimmys the best. Other plus is they are all approved for fresh + salt water. If that matters to you.... Reel choice is another "to each his/her own" thing. If you can get to a sporting goods store, try some out. Bring in your fav rod to BPS and they'll let you put reels on it to test out how the balance/feel is. That helped me make my decision(s). Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted August 17, 2012 Super User Posted August 17, 2012 Pflueger Presidents are as good or better than Shimano Saharas or Symetres, plus cheaper. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted August 18, 2012 Super User Posted August 18, 2012 I love my Pflueger Presidents. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 18, 2012 Super User Posted August 18, 2012 I love my Pflueger Presidents. You are such a girl.... Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 18, 2012 Super User Posted August 18, 2012 Guess I am the only Daiwa guy here. Unfortunately my newest model is the Advantage 2000A. The other 2 are older...an SS Tournament 2500C and a 1500CU. They seem pretty nice to me, but my best reel before buying these reels is a Penn 430SS....about 30 years old. The only Shimano reel I can compare to is a cheap one of the same or older era. My cheap Daiwa of that era is a piece of junk compared to these newer reels. No Presidents or Patriarchs to compare either. I went B/C when I got back into fishing, and so only keep the bare minimum spinning gear for when I'm in a spot where my lack of skill keeps me from using a B/C reel. The Daiwa Exceler-TSH High Speed Spinning Reel is currently on sale at TW and looks like an interesting option. EDIT: Oops, just saw that TW only has the 4000 size left. BPS also sells them. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted August 18, 2012 Super User Posted August 18, 2012 You are such a girl.... All I can say is that you will never catch me using a SHEmano! 1 Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted August 18, 2012 Super User Posted August 18, 2012 All I can say is that you will never catch me using a SHEmano! What's going on here? First Glenn says all his teachers looked like you, regarding their less than lovely looks, and RW says you are "such a girl". Did you correct some of their spelling, or grammar? Quote

I think it has something to do with them both catching me in drag on the last Road Trip. What I do after hours is my own business. Quote
Capt.Bob Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 I think if you really mean quality and Upgrade, Stradic or Sustain how much you want to spend? They are the smoothest strongest and most durable reel available today under $500.00, so for less then $140.00 you can own a Stradic FJ, or spend over $225.00 on a Sustain, the next best is over $500.00 I'm not willing to spend that! But if I was going to upgrade gear the Stradic FJ is the best you can do for that kind of money, there are a lot of other reals but if you pick one up and turn the handle, you will see what I mean, put a fish on the other end and it will get even smmmooooottthhhhhheerrr, with a drag that will rival most baitcasting reels. I would not buy anything without checking it out in person, if I new I was looking for something better than I had, if you do, it will be a Stradic FJ. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 18, 2012 Super User Posted August 18, 2012 I do spinning and nothing else. I own Shimano ( stradics and spheros'), Quantum (cabos), Pflueger ( supremes, medalist, arbor) Daiwa (tierra) Penns, and Abu (sorons, 20-40-60). There is no best reel, it's all subjective. All of the above reels are smooth, more than adequate drag performance, each has it's merits as well as shortcomings. Some have needed service or repair others have never been touched, down the line each reel works wonderfully. If I were to pick a favorite, be my 2 soron 40's, DVT cleaned and lubed one of them and it's phenominal, that said I have no qualms in using any one of them regardless of the size of my target species. NIB just about every reel is good, the true measure is hard fishing over an extended period of time, catching large fish as well as the reel weathering the elements. If your reel stands up to that...........stick with it. Quote
