Quantum Reels

I have read a lot of mixed reviews about Quantum. Some people say they fish their reels and nothing else. Others say they don't think about touching them. I have read that a lot of the reels are great out of the box but that the inner workings fall apart over time and I see some of their more expensive reels on ebay for pretty cheap, quite often, which makes me a little suspicious. I was wondering what ya'll thought? Thanks in advance.

I've fished them without and issue on both the spinning and casting side of things. I haven't had an issue whether I have purchased them new or used with maintenance and have found some great deals as well on ebay. You will get alot of opinions either way as this becomes a heated topic at times but if u get one off ebay and don't like it let me know I'd be happy to take it off your hands.

We have lots of guys that fish Quantum, but I think there are much better alternatives at every pricing point.

Quantums have some really good design and engineering features and some of thier reels are super smooth and free running. The problem with them IMO is quality control and finish. I see some reels that just don't fit back together as perfectky as they should and the finish blisters on some. The issues seem relatively minor and easily addressed. If this happend they could give the other big 3 fits. The rediculous latching mechanism on the nose piece has to go as well. Opening a new Quantum for the first time can take as long as the rest of the service.

LOL thought this was just me on the "initial" opening. I almost zinged one across the room once.

I feel like their reels are getting better......but there are some better options out there like Roadwarrior said. I have a few different reels from Shimano, Quantum, and one Abu. From what I've had, Shimano is the best, but I have a Quantum Smoke that I really like a lot. Shimano Curados are hard to beat in my opinion.

I have 4 and no problems, I have a Kinetic that has been a great workhorse reel for me, a Catalyst that is a solid reel and has been used hard for some time and is still smooth and working like the day I bought it and I have 2 Smokes, a 100 SPT and a 150 HPT, I think the Smoke is the finest reel they ever made. I also have a Revo SXT, a Pflueger Supreme casting reel, and Okuma V system and an Okuma Induron round reel and a Diawa Advantage and a Diawa TD-X 103HVA. The Okumas and the Pflueger have been discontinued but still work and they are both over 5 years old, and the rest of my reels have been great, all of them and the only brand reel I'll never own again is a Shimano as I said before, I got 2 Symetres and both failed within months and Shimano customer service told me too bad I should have got a better reel and while I realize I got lemons It left a bad taste in my mouth. Other than that my Abu Garcia, my Pflueger, my Okumas. Diawas, and my Quantums have all performed remarkably well and I never had a problem and I use my reels hard.

I can't speak to higher end reels, but my cheap quantum code performs just barely under the level of my citica 200e. I prefer the way it feels also. The best spinning reel I've ever had is my quantum kinetic pti. I would trust them. If you are spending 150+ on a reel I think it would hard to go wrong, really. I don't know that anyone sells junk.

The next reel I buy will probably be a quantum energy, but I've been thinking about a few of the okuma reels also.

I have the previous generation Quantum Energy with the color shift that I purchased used 3-4 yrs ago and its working very well and without a problem.

I have all Shimanos, except for two Quantum Accurist 501PTs. They cast great, and have been trouble free..........untill now. One, has been seeing alot of duty on the squarebill rod the last few weeks. It was nice and smooth at first, now it sounds like a corn sheller, and the spool won't engage when I turn the handle, I have to pop the thumb bar up to get it to engage. Still casts great, but I have had a similarly priced Shimano, my Citica 201D (the Accurist was $129 new), that has seen far more use and abuse and is still like new. When I get my Citica 201E back from DVT, I'll send him the Quantum, but I will not buy any more new ones.

I own but one Quantum, a Cabo 30, performance wise it measures up to any other $180 reel I have. That said nothing seems to be perfect, this reel is the size of a 2000 with a limited line capacity and it's on the heavy side, but has an incredibly strong drag for a reel in this class. I opted to use 14# mono which gave me only about 80 yds or so of line for specific species, perfect line management, but I go spooled. I purchased a larger sized Plueger with more line capacity, 2 oz lighter and an excellent drag. On paper seemed like the right choice, as silky smooth as this reel is the line management is not acceptable. Probably going back to the Quantum, for rugged fish I want a rugged reel.

i have 2 one a nitrious combo from dicks and a esclade from dicks they get used hard every day and no problems with them im waiting for the esclade to go on clearence get another one

Ive got a quantum reel. It was a lower end model KVD reel. It was like $90 at bass pro though. I caught a bunch of fish on it. Maybe like 50. Then i caught a 4lb 10oz that gave a pretty good fight. Then after that it was like really noisy. Still works fine, but when you reel it, it sounds funny ? lol

I don't want to say a reel shouldn't stand up to a 4-5 pound fish, but as a general observation too many people use their reels a winch to land fish. The rod has much more power and should be the main tool in fighting fish. It's much easier to move the fish toward you with the rod and use the reel to take up line & repeat until the fish is landed.

I have a Catalyst PT casting reel and I love it. It works perfectly for throwing spinnerbaits. Very smooth and rarely backlashes, not to mention it came in my favorite color. At times I like it better than my Curado.

Well guys, I wound up buying a Catalyst PT. I read enough good things about it and was able to find it new for 80 bucks so I figured if it breaks on me, I'm not out 200 or anything. I'll let yall know what I think when I get to fish it. Thanks for the input from everyone!
