Fishing In Wind

hey guys,

the lake i fish gets fairly windy, i usually throw senkos when it is calm enough to fish them. what baits and lures should i use to catch fish?

i have always had success fishing the shoreline that the wind is blowing against. spinnerbaits work well

Anything that is heavier to keep your line tight so you can feel the bite. Like fishking, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, crankbaits, swim jigs, or heavier weighted T-Rigged plastics. I too find it difficult to finesse fish in high winds as it is harder to feel the bite.

If at all possible I will cast with the wind, depending on just how windy it is I might give up a spot that looks better if I have to battle the wind all day or reposition the boat so I can sidearm cast parallel to the shore, but I agree use a heavier bait to help keep your lines tight.

If you cast into the wind keep the rod tip and bait low to the water as you cast.

Topwaters, spinnerbaits and Chatterbaits work well in choppy waters.

You have to find the fish. Even though the water is choppy they may still be holding deeper so you have to keep hunting for them. Once you get the pattern you will have a good time.

Rattle traps are one of my favorite baits when it's windy. They cast really well with or against the wind.

I agree with what the other guys have said. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is also like to use a carolina rig if I want to fish plastics b/c using a heavy weight you can keep in contact with the bottom.

When it's windy, like a lot of others said, I prefer using spinnerbaits, swim jigs, or a heavy texas rigged plastic so you can maintain bottom contact. I always keep my rod tip and line close to the surface, or even have it in the water depending on how windy, that way the wind can't catch the line and create a large bow in it. That way you can maintain contact with your baits.

First, be certain you address the increased hazards of boating in heavy winds... WEAR YOUR PFD.

Nullify as many of the wind related boat control challenges... properly anchor or use drift socks.

Now you can concentrate on presenting your bait. (as mentioned above, keeping your rod tip close to the water will alleviate much of your line bow)
