hooah212002 Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 I picked up a Spro Bronzeye at Gander Mountain last week and gave it a shot this weekend. I seem to have trouble walking it. I do the slack line "pop" (as shown in Gene's video and elsewhere) but it just kinda chugs straight along. I tried in on open water and over some slop but got nada from it, not even a tail wag. Could it just be that I have to much give in my line or rod? The only rod I have now is a 6' medium spinning with mono (I think 12#). I tried all sorts of different retrieves; short pops, longer pops, pop-pop-pause, pop-pause, rod pointing at the water, rod at about 10 o'clock. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted August 13, 2012 Super User Posted August 13, 2012 I have found that you have to give it very little wrist action in conjuction with leaving the line slack. That being said, I give up on walking and just do a series of slow pops and that works just fine for me. Quote
Diggy Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 You can try trimming the legs slightly, but some frogs are easier than others, even with a mh/h rod Quote
lavbasser Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Your rod is under-powered to walk it, especially with any distance on your cast. 1 Quote

Your rod is under-powered to walk it, especially with any distance on your cast. X2!! That summed it up perfect, frogs aren't like spooks or other walking baits as they don't have any built in action so you need to use your rod to provide that action. Quote
shadowchaser Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Today with the Booyah Pad Crasher(cricket frog) About 15 hits and I connected on 4 fish. One was a nice 3-4lber I caught in open water mid day. I personally just pop-pop-pause or pop-pop-pop-pause. I have more success fishing it super slow and changing up the rythm. Right now my rod set up isn't ideal for froggin' either so I feel your pain. I use a Abu Garcia Veritas 7' medium action with 12lb test spinning rod. I can definately see where having a heavy would help hook ups. There is a thread talking about how the berkley lightning heavy action is great for the money(around $30-$40 at walmart) so that might be something you could look into. Quote

shadowchaser Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 I did have one, but I sold it to clear out some space. I am kinda kicking myself because I didn't think to try it as a frog rod. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted August 17, 2012 Super User Posted August 17, 2012 I use a 7' heavy action graphite rod for my frogs. Always trim about 3/4" of the legs off the frog to help it walk. It takes subtle pops of the wrist to get it to walk. Some frogs walk easier than others, too. The tru tungsten madd maxx walks very well, as does the koppers. The spro bronzeye popper and bronzeye 65 also walk better than the bronze eye jr. The spros are a bit harder to walk, though, except for the popper. Quote
hooah212002 Posted August 29, 2012 Author Posted August 29, 2012 Just a follow up to point out that you guys were correct. I have been able to walk the frog more effectively now that I have a more stout longer rod. Thanks. Quote
